Hi Kea, this is very late after your post, but I just found your site on KZbin today. I must say, you are very pleasant to listen to, none of the annoying verbal ticks that I find so distracting, and a calm, even tone. Well done. I hope you've kept up with the quilting and Tubing. Good on you.

This is such a great idea. I am horrible for putting all my scraps into a tote (shudder). Not organized at all. I think I'll tackle my stash in January! Thanks for the tips - I love how organized this is!
@GrapeApe20186 жыл бұрын
You can use your itty bitty scraps too. Just bag them up till you have a plastic grocery bag full, then make a simple dog or cat bed ( I just made my own pattern) and use your tiny scraps as filler in the bed. The finished bed is washable, regular wash in a front loader, gentle cycle in a top loader. I donate extra beds to local pet shelters.🐈

I’ve always done this as I go. I have a storage box for each -mini charms. Charms. And jelly roll strips. As you’re making quilt , go ahead right then and cut the scraps and store. Makes it much easier.

Suggestion, I often will cut the scrap to size when I am cutting my quilt. I cut what I need for the quilt and throw the excess to the side, then before I move on I stack up my quilt pieces, grab the scraps and cut them right then and throw into the scrap bucket for that size. I am already in cutting mode, so easy to just make one or two more cuts and it's done, rather than have to stop and do it later.

Ms Kea..... I don’t know how long it has been that I have been watching your quilting videos. But, this evening I watched my first floss tube video. I just loved the interaction with your viewers. I especially felt close to you after I had heard about your child’s medical problems. I had a son that spent a lot of time in the NICU at our local hospital. That was over 40 years ago and still feels like yesterday. It is so hard to keep your head held high and go on with your daily lives. I praise you for your kindness and compassion for others. You are truly a gift to all of us out here. God bless. I just found guilting last year and just love it. I haven’t done much cross stitching to date but would be open to try something new if the opportunity arises.

I save scraps like crazy! I also sort by colors, from large fabrics to the very smallest pieces. The smallest of pieces I use for fabric flowers or fashion doll clothes. (patterns for dolls clothing are very tiny, and can be hand sewn where need be). The smaller pieces can be used for places on existing quilts to strengthen the seamed areas where they cannot be sewn back together. By placing a small cut of fabric underneath the worn area, new hand stitching onto the piece next to it repairs it, and you don't see the newer piece laying underneath the worn area.

I love those sewing machine bookmarks. I’m in the UK and just looked for this planner on eBay and the only ones available are in the US, granted, I am 6 yrs late😁 but I am really new to quilting. Iv just been to the festival of quilts in Birmingham August 2023, my partner bought tickets for us, well, it was a gift for me ….and I know he thought he was not going to enjoy it much…..but we were both blown away by everything we saw and he was the one wanting to buy a sewing machine half way through the day….RESULT! The reason I’m just coming to quilting at the ripe old age of 63 ( my bloke is 15 yrs my junior and we have a 23 yr old son) is a lovely lady called Kate, who has a KZbin channel called The last homely house, I was attending hoping to meet her and managed to miss her the whole time I was there…I’d be really rubbish as a stalker😂 Anyway, your channel has just popped up in my feed and I’m now a new sub, loving your easy going personality. I haven’t searched any other content yet so I hope you’re still passing on your knowledge to the rest of us novices👍🏽🙋🏽♀️. oh brilliant, you’re still there…I get to watch the whole back catalogue 👍🏽🤩 Sorry for being so wordy, got a bit carried away!

i spent several days, a few hours a day, and cut my scraps into 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 5 and 7 inch pieces. I sorted them a tad differently: all Christmas and flannels, no matter the size, went into a separate basket. I was really worried that I would never use those 1.5 inch strips. I looked around and found a couple of patterns for string quilts. I cut 6.5 inch foundation blocks from scrap muslin. I started sewing my strips of red, pink, blue, purple, white and related prints. I didn't have enough for 36 blocks so I cut a pink print to complete half of each block. I just cut solid blue for sashing. Thank you! Now I will have a new quick quilt made from my ugly old pile. Still have brown, orange, green 1.5 inch strips. Everything in neat boxes on a shelf.
@jayamilapersson40304 жыл бұрын
You could use those for a fall or thanksgiving quilt. Brown, green orange strips are a nice variation on naturally warm colours you could even make a small Wall hanging IF you make all of one colour into a block then cut shapes out of it then sew it onto a background fabric kinda like big applique.

Just found your video - many many thanks. At this point in time I have been storing my fabrics by dominant color, or by 'kind' - e.g., batiks, kids, etc. I use the snap-closed clear plastic bins that are approximately 14" square and 3" deep. I wait until they go on sale at Michael's and I have a coupon! So now some bins are bulging, others are quite empty. And I never knew what to do with those small, tiny scraps. Your video has me rethinking how to sort/store -- by size rather than by color, or keep with color but only in specific sizes. I'll have to see. Bigger pieces, like fat quarters, are folded and stacked. Anyway...you have given me lots to consider, and I deeply appreciate the great video, and your kind way of presenting. Time to start re-organizing!
@kateelee44437 жыл бұрын
I never thought of sorting by size, that is interesting. I have a similar way to store my fabrics. I use sterilite boxes. They are about the size of a shoe box but instead of sorting by size I sort by color. I also sort out a box that has just holiday fabrics. I doing painting so I'm used to thinking in terms of color when I'm creating. The boxes are a large enough for fairly good size fabrics. Because they are clear I can see at a glance what is inside without having to dig through them. They are stack-able and easy to store in shelving units or cupboards. They also protect your fabric from everything from bugs to toddler spills lol. When I pull a group of fabrics for a project that I'm working on I store them in one large box with a pretty print on it. You can find them really cheap at any dollar store.

Do you ever make " MADE FABRIC PATCHES" for putting into patchwork. You just sew fabrics together to make the fabric ( with or without foundation) The patches can be cut in shapes to use or just use the entire made fabric in a block. I have done that often in the past and they make great blocks.

My daughter and I just had to laugh at your "so embarrassed by how many scraps I have" basket. Oh my goodness! What would you say about mine??? I have about 2 1/2 LARGE totes full! All carefully folded and sorted by color groups, ranging in size from 2 1/2 squares/triangles to nearly a yard. Anything smaller than 2 1/2 inches goes into several baggies to be used in strip quilts and crazy patches. I do like your ideas, though. After we move and I actually have a sewing room, I may go ahead and bust up some of my smaller scraps.

Great video. I do similar to what you did. However, if I have a strip that's closer to 3", I won't chop it down to 2.5. I'll create another size bucket before I cut it off and waste that small amount. Sorry...had to mention that.
@cvan10756 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your demonstration video. You are lovely to watch. I get that I am not yet over the initial aversion to cutting into my scraps. Your planner suggests the ideal scrap sizes to reduce to ie: 1.5" , 2.5", 3.5" , 5", 7". Please tell me whether that limits you? Doesn't that mean you have to piece scraps to make a purse front or another item that requires a chunk of fabric? I guess scrappy quilts are in your blood and you would rather piece than regret busting your scraps? I belong to a guild and spend hours cutting up scraps to make precut kits for volunteers to piece into rail fence quilts. But if I don't have a designated project in mind, would I then want to design only with scraps of that size? Please advise me what draws you to wanting to plan for these sizes...?
@oldtimerlee88206 жыл бұрын
C Van, I don't cut my scraps down, either. Scraps are good for more than specific sized pieces for quilt blocks. I do all sorts of sewing projects from clothing to pin cushions. Don't like to waste fabric, either. Even "cheap" fabric is expensive, these days. A lot of fabric bits are tossed when most of a pile of scraps are cut into designated sizes.
@dustykeele3 жыл бұрын
@C Van There are certain quilters who promote cutting your scraps into designated sizes. They then write patterns and books which use those specific size pieces, and sell them to their followers. It's all about the money.

Warning!! : You are NOT lining it up straight (at the bottom towards the camera) correctly. It's not even!!! Remeasure what you've already cut with the ruler on top of the fabric, and you'll SEE that it's NOT EXACTLY ACCURATE!!!! Do not trust the measurement from the bottom ruler UNDERNEATH the fabric, from the mat. Instead: Lay your ruler on TOP of the fabric you are cutting, to double-check to make sure that you're cutting what you THINK you're cutting!! And include the entire width of the line itself INSIDE the measurement of fabric you are cutting or you will be millimeters off!! And that adds up!!

@annebebee67643 жыл бұрын
I was just going to suggest the same. Your ruler is much more precise. Place the ruler over the piece the you are cutting and keeping 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 etc with the part remaining (less than a inch) to your right that you will throw away. Much more precise and straight cuts.
