Bro. I am about to quit my job in two days time. My decision is already made. I want to commit to digital design and development. I had thought I was mad and perhaps had ADHD too. This video resonates with me a lot. I have a family I support. I just can't bear going to work for another day again. I have been battling this feeling for about 3 years. Truth be told, I wish I could be like other people at work who have resigned to their fates and just do their jobs. So oftentimes I consider being an outlier a curse, but few times I see it as a blessing, because when I do what I really wish to do (design and development), I am truly happy. May God help me. I am so scared. But I will quit my job.

Bro. I'm similar in personality. When you are working on your own vision you feel alive, so alive that words cannot express it. You need to pair up with a business partner who is non-creative but disciplined who can keep you on track and channel your creativity into concrete products, money and scale. Or you need to learn to sell to companies directly - though this requires good self marketing and networking. Try to gain depth in a particular field and understand the business problems they are facing deeply so you can speak their language and they see you as their problem solver.

Haha, yeah I lurk from time to time. I'm not a fan of popping in on live streams because I don't like the attention... It's been a long road. Lol it's not just my emails, its my Twitter, Facebook, Udemy...and people get mad that I can not always respond, but they don't understand it's impossible, literally...

@@TraversyMedia Whenever I think 'this niche is small' I just remember your channel and I'm like 'yeah so uh, step your shit up Josh.' Do you ever want to expand your niche but feel as if you're pigeonholed to code tutorials? Or does webdev get boring to you? I try to make this 'variety stuff' to remind people there's more to life. It's a pretty meta position to be in. But it's hit or miss - half are like 'yo josh just give us more interviews' and half are like 'great work'. At your current 2-3k subs per day growth I imagine you'll be at 1 mil in now time. Let me know what it's like to get that gold play button :D

This hit home on so many levels. I want to thank you for being the first entrepreneur I've come across who is brave enough to show their failures. It is 10x more valuable to see that than the "massive success" that everyone else is so desperate to portray. It's easy to forget that the real end-goal is freedom, not money. Money is just one way to possibly get there. Money != happiness. Thanks for keeping it real, man, and good luck.

No point in just talking about every win. The learning comes from the losses, but you can't dwell on them. When people say 'you're charging how much for that? you made that in 10 minutes?' the real answer is: no - I made this over years of failure, this is just what it seems like to you.

Your authenticity is why I support and watch your videos man. I've been through pretty much the exact same origin story. I've honestly given up lately on pursuing my creative freedom, but when I was unexpectedly laid off by my last job after breaking my back for them to make them millions, I wrote down a life ethos that I would do my best to live by: 1. Have the skills to be invaluable to yourself, your family, your home, and your career. 2. Have a low maintenance business that provides enough profit to sustain backup cash reservoirs. 3. Never sacrifice long term goals for anyone, except family. 4.Trust your gut, never trust employment, and have faith in your family. 5. Always take actions to soften negative outcomes before they happen. 6. Always be on a path to acquire knowledge that aids your way of life, self, and family. 7. Don't abandon relationships for immediate passions. 8. Always be true to yourself, no matter the outcome. 9. Always keep knowledge in a solid state through repetition, remediation, or activity. 10. Be fit. Be healthy. Be aware. Stay alive.

I can't remember the last time I watched a video and related to every single feeling so strongly. It was a surreal 25 minutes of watching someone describe how I feel to myself. The active search for contentment and happiness seems futile, (in my humble opinion lol) it's not something you can find around the next corner, it's discovered in yourself. That's a hard realization for me to swallow. Eventually what I thought was going to bring me happiness, ended in uninterested and couldn't care less feelings about what I was doing. The activities that make me feel complete and fulfilled in the moment are never things I can see myself ever making a living from. I'm still searching and this video was very saddening but also uplifting and motivating. Thank you for this. It was a pleasant and unexpected surprise. I wish you the best of luck and I'm glad you're discovering your contentment. (How I see things anyways lol). I'll keep looking inside for mine.

Same here. I related to everything in the video. And I related to everything in your comment also. ❤️ I can't remember the last time something or someone affected me so deeply. Making me feel less lonely in the way I think and feel. Best wishes in your quest for contentment. One thing I've learned is that its form is an ever moving target, but its presence can be constant if you give yourself permission to fail, to be confused, to be depressed, or even lazy occasionally. @Kyle m made some comments above about his life ethos. It's a perfect example of framework that can help you be content while always pushing out of your comfort zone and striving to become the best version of yourself.

So motivating that I watched it twice and added it to my favorites. I know that feeling of entrapment, working 12 hour shifts as a cook. I hated being inside all day and never seeing the sun; it does get crazy i thought i had cabin fever at one point haha. I do miss the comradery though. After careful consideration, I quit last month because i had saved enough to last 6 months without a job and i have been coding all day everyday since. I've been anxious since, especially now since you said you went 6 months without getting accepted for a job, but i feel like it was the best decision i have ever made. If i fail to make it within these 6 months then so be it, all i have to do is get a job and code on any spare time i have left. It's funny cuz i did the same thing before i quit, listening to motivational videos and audiobooks about being fufiled in life and trying to make the best decisions for your life. Seeing that you are making it even after failing more than once proves to me I can do it too, thank you Josh.

Awesome video man. I've been working close to two years now and being an employee is really soul-consuming. You go and basically waste your time working for projects you basically have no interest in, having to deal with colleagues you don't necessarily like for a salary that is not necessarily huge. I'm working in the seo field and even though I love it (it's a field that you usually go into because you created websites out of pure interest) just the fact that I have to wake up every single morning at the same time and live the same day, week after week, month after month is soul crushing. I can feel the same for my colleagues and I can feel they don't enjoy the rat race. I don't know a single person enjoying it. Fortunately I've been working on a side project (affiliate websites) and making a side income that is a little bit higher that my job. So right now I'm saving a few months more and I'm gonna quit my job next year, so that I can be totally independant and not living the rat race anymore. Thanks for your videos, I can totally relate. Cheers from France.

This is the most REAL video on here I’ve ever seen Josh. I definitely believe if you don’t take risks for your pursuit of happiness, you will stay unhappy and live full of regrets until you are old.. I personally recently took a leap of faith and began learning code. Many people have told me it’s a hard road and many don’t “make it”. But coding makes me happy and I’m going to keep going and not give up. It’s definitely a lot to learn but I’ve always loved a good challenge. I actually decided to leave my retail job and pursue web dev because i like it and I can actually use my mind instead of just feeling like a robot in customer service jobs... to me customer service feels like a personal hell.. so if you have any advice for me I’d love to hear it because as a free code camper I don’t think anyone will notice me until I’ve learned “enough “... but how will I know? I want to land that front end dev job soon...

I'm not a coding expert, I'm a beginner myself, so I hope you don't mind me offering advice. What I would do if I were you is I would do some work for free. Find a project you are passionate about and develop it. Or find a company you want to work for and see what kind of projects they work on. Work on one of those projects on your own and document it on your own website. Or just on Github. Start networking in person (at local meetups of programmers, startups, and entrepreneurs) and online. Most likely, it will take a while. But if you put in all that work, especially on your own, you'll be the kind of self-starting, hard-working person others actually want to hire. Best wishes to you.

* engineering dropouts high five * I've been making sacrifices here and there to save up almost half of my income. I've an above average job and two side gigs which allow me to save between 200 u$d and 300 each month. I'm listening to this as I set my CV and letter for a job in the USA. It's crazy, insane, I know it. But if I get a job that pays 16~20 an hour I'll be able to save just as much living abroad, and there are quite a lot more opportunities up there. I just stumbled upon your channel (seems like yt sometimes gets its recommendations right) and I just wanted to say to you: YOU CAN MAKE IT. The grind it's monstrous. I've lost my job. I've been homeless. I've had to left everything, my whole life behind. So I understand you. I've a nice life now. I feel that I make an impact on my job, I like my new career. I've lost 30 kgs and now I can afford to eat as I wish. I can take two hot showers every day and then open a fully stocked fridge! And yet so, I'm willing to give up everything for a better chance. That's the strength of a mission. It's not just a dream, it's not like you just "want it" you NEED IT. So I wish you the best of successes 💪 (Here's your like, sub and bell m8)

You really did something! You taught a whole raft of ppl what they have to look forward to once out of college. Unless ppl have backing from family, it is very hard. Can b done, but fraught with pitfalls that R difficult to climb over. wish U much success and thanks. Passing this onto my 21 year old graduating college son. He is going through something similar right now. Cheers

I feel you man, i'm about to graduate. I'm deciding how my life gonna be. I am very aware of how manipulative and soul-tearing the corporate will do to me. My job requires me to travel 60 minutes from home to plant everyday so that's basically 2 hours wasted + 8 hours work. I'm not in the position as extreme as you but i feel the courage and the risk you have to go through. My road is beginning to split into 2. I have constantly been thinking about the decision i'm about to make. No matter which road i take, it may cost me many important things in my life. Ofc i will work to get money to support my small future business or my thing intially . I hope you keep making videos for extreme introverted people like me have the strength to handle the struggle and to take that leap in the incoming future.

Thanks for this video, man. Even though I don't take the time to watch all of your videos that pop up in my notifications for one reason or another, I do notice how much work you're putting out, and I'm never disappointed in the work I see you do. You're an inspiring guy, and I'm glad you've taken this latest step to fulfilling your meaningful life. I'm turning 39 this year, and will start a game development degree path at Cal State San Bernardino in the fall. I never thought I'd ever decide to *actually* choose that path, that it was a stupid dream, that I should go down a safer route. But I'd be miserable. I can do this, and I can support my family with it; I just have to go out and learn it, I have to build my foundation and keep going. I'm in my first two game development courses right now, and while they have challenged me to a degree, I've rarely had this level of enjoyment and passion while learning. And I know that if I get into game development, it doesn't mean I still can't continue learning to be a web developer or get into digital graphic design. Your enthusiasm and determination helps remind me of my own motivations and helps me push myself when I want to give up. TL;DR: Thanks for this. You're doing great!

You are a visionary . Have many ideas but don’t have backers. You will find your place keep going.

I wasn't going to click on this video but I'm glad I did. Everything that you described is so relateable to what I'm going thru right now. I quit going to college for engineering because I never liked the idea of working in a cubicle for 12 hours a day. 2 Years later and I haven't taken a step of action to start a business in something that I like doing despite having so many ideas. I was just about to quit my job today with 2 months of savings to back me up but after coming across your video I think I'll stick around and grind on my spare time until it is less risky and hopefully come up with something. Thanks for your story. Subscribed.

Thanks for sharing your experience man. After 25 minutes and 31 seconds, i still wanted to hear some more of it. I feel like i'm in the middle of steel and rocks, but videos like this makes me shake the thoughts off and keep on grinding.
