As a parent and a dog trainer/pet care/ dog walker, I can honestly say it never ceases to amaze me how little parents are willing to pay for child care. Like, I used to get 300 a week per dog to walk. I’d go in, walk their dog, clean up any messes, make sure to spend time for play, give lots of treats that they provide, and leave. I’d spend an hour and a half per dog. Like, people who pay for animal care are the ones who should be parents. I’ve done child care through the state I live as well, and I’ll be dammed, the amount of parents who wanted to play nothing or close to nothing was so astounding, I went into animal care. It’s messed up.

Although I'm Australian, I did some math with the American federal minimum wage of $7.25. If a person is working for 44 hours a week, they should be earning around $319 a week. That's not even taking into account that apparently the average American Babysitter wage for 2022 was $20.57 for a single child, and $23.25 for two kids, increasing this to a weekly wage of between $905.08 to $1023 a week.

Choosing beggars is one of my favourite sub-reddits, cause it's so funny, until I was in such a situation last year. It's crazy how far some people will go. An acquaintance of mine was getting married and contacted me through my best friend (they were friends in school back then) and she asked me if I would like to be her wedding photographer. I'm a hobby photographer and was a bit surprised, because this isn't just any event that's a freaking wedding. She told me that she knows that and that it is completely fine, she's seen my photography alot during the past years. I thought this was a great way to challenge myself and get better at photography. She invited me to a drink and that was when it already went weird. She invited me yet I had to pay my own drink - and on top of it I was not doing well finanically, but didn't want her to know that, so I had to buy expensive stuff since this place was pretty expensive. She said that she had meant to invite me, but had forgotten her wallet before her fiance came into the shop to give it to her - and since we had already gotten our drinks there was no use to pay anymore. She had a LOT of expectations. She wanted me to be there in the early morning, 7AM, and photograph her while she's getting her hair and make-up done at a salon as well as photograph the behind the scenes stuff or her putting on her wedding dress etc. Then she told me she'd prefer if I could get my car (which was nonsense since the church she wanted to marry in is like a 15 minute walk from my place and the hair dresser a short bus trip and gas went crazy in 2022), because I should drive her to the church after she was done since her fiance obviously cannot drive her due to not being allowed to see her beforehand. I was already a bit uhm let's say overwhelmed, but it got worse. She told me that after the wedding we'd go to a special party venue and I was originally not part of the guest list, but since she wants me to photograph the whole party until around 6PM the least it would be, in her words, pretty rude to just then dismiss me and make me leave the party, so she is so nice to me that after my work is done I can obviously eat something, but she doesn't want me to drink. At the end, when we talked about payment and I was already telling myself in my head that I am not going to do this, she told me "Yea uhm it depends...The party venue was really, really expensive and I have no wedding planner you know, I do everything on my own. It depends on how much the guests drink, because this is not paid upfront but after the wedding. So if you and my friends don't drink much it could be more, but I think what you will definetly get will be 50€." I genuienly had to hold my laughter and then made excuses for why I had to leave. We walked for a bit and she was like constantly ranting to me how hard her life is, how hard it is to raise a kid at 27 age, that she always gets the short end of the stick between her and her soon-to-be-husband. It was crazy. Two days later I messaged her telling her that I cannot do this for 50€ + the conditions around it are too crazy for such a low pay, even if we know each other. She suddenly texted really really dryly and because I had gotten into a fight with her when we were teenagers I was, honestly, a bit afraid of her, so when she was supposed to get her camera I left my house with my father since we were supposed to get grocery anyway. Before she saw my father she looked furious and yanked the camera out of my hand, but when my father came through the door she politely greeted him and smiled at me. It was around 2-3 weeks later when my best friend and I, who was invited, got together again and she told me how she had bad-mouthed me at the wedding, saying that I was greedy and how she nice she had been that I was invited to the party despite just being a photographer and that my photography isn't even that good to begin with. Her closest friends, including my bff, and her also went onto a short trip where she was still salty and told my best friend how glad she is that I said no, because she would have almost bought a spot for me last minute for this trip. The wedding had been over a week ago and she was still mad. Also her photographers ended up being other friends from school last minute. And they didn't even get the 50€. :)

20:42 as someone who has “childish” interests despite being 16 (I like kids cartoons, the only reason I don’t still collect slime and fidget spinners is because I masked those special interests until they were gone) I think the “you’re too old for that” argument is fucking stupid, and being told that after you finally have the confidence to infodump to a relative about My Little Pony is soul crushing (just a personal example) HOWEVER you, especially as a grown adult, can’t expect others to fund your hobbies/interests. And if it’s not your living space, you can’t expect them to house your collections either.

I remember my grandmother "agreeing" with me that people who get upset about being offered "exposure" for their work are all multimillionaires and need to shut up and accept exposure as payment. But the point I was TRYING to make was that the people who get offered "exposure" in place of payment, and complain about it, are usually struggling to afford a cardboard box to live in so they don't die of exposure, and the people I was saying were entitled were the ones who act like exposure is a good way to pay someone who's desperate to not die.

The guy wanting chickens makes sense if you know about chickens because not every breed is meant for eating or is good for eating. Some are tough with little meat and meant as show birds. Some are good egg layers but taste awful. There are breeds both decent layers and eaters. Show birds are almost impossible to eat. Mixes are a crapshoot and you may spend all that time and effort for nothing egg or meat wise. I know it seems like choosing beggar there but that's because most folks have no idea about raising chickens and oddly enough the poster seems to know their breeds. Being able to afford to raise the chickens on the other hand if strapped for cash is another thing. I hope they already have a coop! I know chicken feed is dirt cheap but it takes awhile to raise a bird to eat! Raising from eggs means months and months without eggs and over a year without meat unless you get the bizzaro factory hens. Chickens meant for eggs and food are also first cheap, I think I can get some chicks from the local feed store for $1 each, and pullets(hens nearing laying age) for $3 each. If they have a farm they may have enough forage and garden scraps to get away without paying for much feed, but its still costing money.

5:00 - I mean, I can imagine a dog being a need of a farmer who can't protect their farm in any other way. But I can't imagine the situation when a cat is a need (if you are suffering from rodents, asking to donate a mouse trap would make more sense, and if you have communication issues, getting pets instead is a questionable solution, to begin with).

@@youdontownme08 they probably do survive on that tbh. obviously we can’t make any judgments one way or the other since we don’t have the info but either they’ve gotten way too used to eating snack/junk food that they may not want or know how to cook, or they have a lot of sensory or other related issues and these snack foods are “safe foods” so to speak. i have some of my own issues and one of my top safe foods is literally frozen buffalo chicken dip 😭 on a bad day i will just have that with chips for dinner. not great for you but better than not eating at all

Jacks cheese original thin crust pizza is mentioned because most pizzas contain eggs or nut traces. Tomatoes are pretty versatile and inexpensive Rainbow goldfish is probably there because sesame is in some goldfish flavours. (sesame seeds are classified as seeds and not nuts but the proteins in sesame seeds resemble proteins in certain nuts and can trigger an allergic reaction in people with nut allergies) Sprite is a nice drink and a lot of lemonade brands have traces of nuts. Not a huge ask and again, allergies. Faygo cola is cheap and actually transparent with flavourings origins and many colas are NOT. Still, not a necessary drink but not a huge ask and the brand is specific for a reason. Bottled water is self explanatory Fairlife milk is way higher in protein than many and pretty helpful for people allergic to multiple sources of good protein and fat. Fruit is self explanatory Oreo cookies are notoriously good for people with multiple allergies. A lot of cookies contain eggs. Yeah sure, you don’t *need* cookies but they have a child. Are people not allowed to politely ask for unhealthy snacks? Cheez its are the same story as the goldfish. Gogo self explanatory Bread self explanatory Most families eat cheese and mild cheddar is the least likely to contain nuts or traces Marinara and corn are cheap and good meal staples The deli meat is a little specific but again, a lot of it is produced or cut in places contaminated with nuts. Not worth risking when you have severe allergies The rest is self explanatory. Sure, pudding isn’t necessary but they have a child who deserves to have treats, yk??

I totally understand actually being in need of a cat, as a person with multiple mental illnesses and developmental disorders. For me, a cat is an ESA and genuinely I do need it. However, if you cannot afford the adoption fee, chances are you cannot afford to take care of it. Even if you NEED a cat, you first need to figure out how to pay for it or it'll be neglected, and it doesn't deserve that just because you have issues. I did wait until I could afford a cat to get one, and knowing I was working toward getting one kept me going for the short time I didn't have one.
