I'll be honest the disabled one got me the most, but all were great! Especially because i'm told on a daily I don't look autistic and it doesn't look like I need a service dog. Or i'm just doing this for attention... Feel bad for the Op... because that was an extreme situation

I am 18 and have moderate hearing loss. I have been losing my hearing slowly since I was 7 so I don't sound deaf. I genuinely got yelled at by one of my mum's friends because I didn't respond or turn around when they called my name. The friend came up and tapped me on the shoulder to get my attention. As soon as I realised what happened I apologized and we tried to start talking but this mum immediately started having a go at me for being rude and bullying her daughter by ignoring her. I apologized again and explained that I have hearing loss and wear hearing aids for it. She then had a go at me for lying to an adult because I didn't sound deaf and I was too young to loose my hearing naturally. Well I could have explained the build up of scar tissue on my ear drums but instead I just left...I had only recently been officially diagnosed (my hearing loss kinda snuck up on me) and I had only been wearing my hearing aids for a few weeks so I was very self conscious about the whole thing

Sorry you're going through that Blue, so are you going to totally lose your hearing? Sorry if that's a bit personal, just curious.
@bluechord2928
@bluechord2928 4 жыл бұрын
@@MarkNarrations I don't know to be honest. I have severe scarring on my ear drums and in a cognitive sense I never developed proper listening skills so, while it is likely that I will go deaf earlier than many people as I already have below average hearing, unless something severe happens to my hearing (like another perforated ear drum or standing near something that would deafen most people) I will most likely not completely loose my hearing so that's good :)

@@littledikkins2 my disability is invisible and in my head, but my diagnosis was in dutch elementary school, so i have been living with a disability all my childhood. I know how bad it must be for people with visible disabilities and those with a physical disability on the inside of their bodies, so those "people" who either think young people can't be disabled or that they can just be downright rude or abusive to disabled people can jump off a cliff as far as i'm concerned.

@@littledikkins2 I also have a invisible disability and it really sucks when even doctors don't believe you and say you are just trying to get drugs. I wish I didn't have chronic pain and the fact that I will for the rest of my life. It started when i was in my early 20's and my doctors have done everything they could through surgeries. (Almost 20 surgeries between the ages of 21 and 35. Including a full hysterectomy at age 30) I was also told that I would most likely get cancer from all of the x-rays and CT scans that I've had. Fun. That part really sucks since cancer runs in my family.

I've had so much crap from the "young people can't be disabled" bs throughout my life. It's even worse when it's an invisible disease and you develop insanely high pain tolerance, alongside your doctors training you to try to fit in, in society. So you try to suppress that there is anything wrong with you, meanwhile becoming a social chameleon. You don't "look like" you're in pain. You don't "look" old enough to be disabled, and you have learned to keep quiet about your pain, disease, and to be as unassuming as possible. All of this, only to have people treat you like crap during the times where you really need to rely on their sympathy. Like being on a form of public transit, and being asked to get up. Or always having to be the one to ask others to get up for you. I totally understand that people don't automatically know I'm disabled, but it really sucks having to ask. *Especially* when EMs and honestly, EP in general, give you a hard time, or worse, full on ignore you.

i toyally get it. i'm legally disabled due ti autisim and seveare anxiety. If I get sensory overload then my anxiety spikes, which leads to me shutting down compleatly and in serious cases having violent reactions that are compleatly out of my control. Though those reactions are rare now, it was more common when i was a kid. When i went to disney with my family when i was 10 we got to use the disabled entrance for the rides. My family got yelled at multiple times for cutting the line. And a surprising majority of those people refused to believe i was disabled because i was't in a wheelchair. I may not have had a disability that hindered my movement, but due to my sensory issues being in large crowds and around loud sounds where big issues and many lines at disney where long and had no way for my parents to remove me from them. i looked an acted compleatly normal as i was high functioning and alot of the affects of my autisim centered around communication and sensory issues. The cast members on the other hand where amazing and backed up my parents when it came to disability. During the haunted mansion ride they where taking us through the disabled entrance and I got scared so badly that i turned and ran out the door. The cast member leading us apparently learned from my parents about my sensory seeking behavior towards soft things because i was given a lady plush with soft ears that they let me keep

Same. My parents divorced before I was 3, and shared custody. I only got to see my dad and that side of the family every second weekend. That was the only time I got to be an ordinary kid, and that's saying something, since my cousin (whose parents were also divorced, same custody agreement as me) had paranoid schizophrenia, and we had to be careful around her. My dad was my super hero, and he's the reason I'm so well adjusted today.

I very much understand the first story because I have costochondritis, the nightmare of a name to pronounce for inflammation of rib cage cartilage. I also have a few other conditions that cause me mobility issues (CFS, Fibro, CRPS) so I'm either using some sort of walking aid or I'm in a wheelchair, I'm 26 but often mistaken for younger and I've noticed that the worst people are often old people. They can be so nasty, I've been pushed into shelves, ignored (they talk to whoever is with me) because they think a wheelchair means I can't talk for myself, told I'm faking it. It's never a dull moment that's for sure!

That first story was shocking! I mean I always think people here in England are so nice. Guess I was wrong in thinking that... Entitled people are EVERYWHERE! Also to clarify I'm an American living in England. I don't drive either mainly because I know I would be a menace on the road. I would slip into automatic pilot, start driving on the right side of the road and be completely lost at a round-about. So I take the buses but absolutely AVOID the priority seats. I got legs and intend to use them. It's back of the bus or if it's a double-decker bus I like the upstairs view. The only time I will consider sitting towards the front is if I only have one or two stops to go or the bus is packed, but if I see someone that needs it more then me I move faster than someone could say "Entitled people." Furthermore, I never question it, if someone sits in the priority seats I accept that they may have some kind of medical issue or be pregnant (A woman on the pregnant part). My motto is Never 'Assume' I don't want to make an ass out of myself.

From what I've heard from British disabled folks, England is actually really bad like that. Awhile back some politician decided to run on a campaign of making up bullshit about how many people were scamming government services and benefits and how he'd cut down on that and reduce taxes. I don't know the details, but apparently a lot of disabled people in England noticed a significant uptick in rude nasty public encounters after that campaign.

Ok the Walmart story is r/thathappened. I'm not a cashier but I am friends with a lot of them. A. You don't keep your belongings like your purse at the register. You can get into trouble if you try [I know a lady that did try to keep hers with her and was told several times to keep it in her locker in the back.] Plus after your break/lunch you rarely go back to the same register, so you would always have to remember to take it. The reason your not allowed is obviously because the temptation to steal would be higher. B. There us no such button on the register to secretly call for a manager or CSM [Customer Service Manager]. I can't tell you the number of times a cashier has asked me if I've seen a CSM or can go get one or tell them they need them. If they need a CSM they turn the light on their register to flash and hope a CSM sees it and responds.

1... I feel for OP. 100% NTA. I am SEVERELY disappointed Karen was not hauled off in handcuffs. I had a type of benign bone tumor I described as causing it to feel like my knee was being held by a vice and a 900 lb gorilla was wrenching on my ankle with a 5 ft pipe wrench. Never a positive diagnosis of what the tumor was. 6 of them removed. Finally had them just chop the leg off. Best decision ever.

On story 1, I have a similar problem its caused by EDS - Ehler Danlos Syndrome. What helped me recover, funny enough, was wearing actual metal boned corsets. It held the ribs in place so they weren't able to shift (where it hurts) that allowed the problem to heal, when accompanied by a diet change (I needed more nutrients, and to stop trying to do fad diets as it was literally killing me). People with EDS have "extreme" relationships with salt, from what I've seen... Either they need to go low-sodium, or they need to go high-sodium in their diets. That could be a factor for them.

Karen is a... what? Plonker? Yeah whatever. My little add on friend who tells me how to type says this is a word that exists, so I'll take it. The story that is infuriating me the most is the last one. Two of my closer friends went through something like that, had kids with their respective girlfriends, then Mommy dearest just wouldn't let them near their kids and it destroyed them. I lost contact with one of them unfortunately (he was never really one to keep in touch with someone), the other one is still trying everything he can to see his little boy as often as possible. Recently his ex has stopped responding to his messages again and it really upsets me. My friend is a hard working, kind and funny guy, he would never hurt any of them, yet he gets cut off like he is a bad guy. Our government won't even help him because well, he is the father so who cares right? I just hope OP gets to see his son as often as possible so he can be a good influence on the boy and see him grow up.

I wonder how 'old' Karen would think ppl need to be for disabled if she had a 'precious baby' who suddenly contracted a non-visible disability like the OP has or lupus or something like that She wouldn't give a single s*** about the age then. I think buses should come with a 'Karen' section that only has 2 seats in it, and watch them try to out-entitle each other for them. Oh, and all Karens need to carry a Karen ID with them, with either bronze, silver, gold, or platinum class Karen. They can wave them in each other's faces and 'REEEEEE!'. The rest of the bus gets complimentary ear-plugs in the colour of their choice:p

You spelt it right -- a plonker is an idiot (in the sense of someone who chooses to be ignorant, who is an idiot and likes it that way).

@@MarkNarrations the bad thing is i am mostly British. Like 64% and never knew that my family even had a little British in us. I was always told that we were Irish, German, Black Dutch and 2 types of Native Americans. We do have the German and Irish but none of the others. I would suggest to anyone who has thought about trying the DNA tests to do it because you never know if what your family has told you is the truth or not. I do wish that I had the money to go and see where my family came from.

That karen in the first story, i would love to slap her in the face for being such a freakin plonker. And yes, i had to look that up. Edit to add, i think if i had an invisible disability, i would bring a cane with me everywhere i went. It wouldnt satisfy ALL of the karens, but it could be an inexpensive way to possibly deter a few. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Why doesn't OP( in the first story ) have a wheelchair?! She shouldn't go out by herself. Karen should have been arrested. 😏⚘

From the sound of it her condition would be like having chronic broken ribs times about 3, I doubt if a chair would help her much unless it was electric as there is a lot of exertion to using a manual wheelchair.

The nature of the NHS is that while treatments are free, some accessible devices can still cost money, and doctors won't recommend anything they don't think is necessary. (For example, I have bad stomach cramps after ingesting gluten, which would suggest I have a gluten intolerance, but because the test for it can be iffy and throw up false positives or negatives, they won't put me forward for it -- even though testing positive could mean assistance in buying gluten free food (which can be very expensive, all added up)). If they don't think she will need every benefit of an electric wheelchair, they won't offer one.

When our boys were little, we used to tease them that we were going to "beat them like an ugly stepchild," or "beat them so bad that they would bleed all over the floor." Well, when my oldest was in his early 20's he tried to convince me that one time I had beat him so bad that he wasn't able to sit for three days. I about died laughing. My response? "First off son, if I had of ever beat you that bad, your father would have beat me and thrown me out of the house. Secondly, that's something we used to tease you about!" Too funny.
