For the fingernail swimming, I see the concern. Races can be decided by the milliseconds, so theoretically having your nails would allow you to touch the wall first or additional surface area would increase drag, increasing propulsion, which could make a difference. The thing for the first idea, the nail’s themselves wouldn’t have enough force to activate the plate (pressure sensor at the edge of the pool for timing). You wouldn’t want to hit the boards with the nails as that’d fucking hurt, and they wouldn’t really be able to activate them “early” The second argument is a little more interesting. Swimmers also use their hands in a cup shape, so nails don’t help all that much. They could make a small (small, really small) difference over long distances. But the swimmer in question, Ariarne Titmus, swam 200M relay and 400M. Those distances aren’t so long that the microscopic “benefits” That doesn’t seem like it’d make a difference, maybe .001 but that’s being SUPER generous. For really long events like 800M, 1500M, and the 10k open water yes, we might try and not have swimmers have super long nails. Then, I think the discussions are valid.

I don't know about the rules and regulations of swimming but I could make the case that: 1. Longer nails might give a very small performance boost, acting like small peddles at the tip of your fingers, 2. by making your arms every so slightly longer, you could cut off fractions of a second of your time. If the margins at olympic swimming are very, very tight, then maybe it could actually make a difference. Of course, this would require a massive amount of studies that potentially could prove to be inconclusive over the effectiveness of longer nails. And how fake nails could potentially be a unfair advantage. the colour doesn't matter, as long as it isn't red, as that makes you go faster.

I have a friend who picked up her whole family, her husband and 5 kids, and ran from the Taliban when the planes were evacuating people. They had a big house, cars and everything, she was a teacher, but they had to abandon it all and seek refuge in UK, they didn't even know any English, because my friend knew what was on the horizon. She said to me that, if she didn't leave, she knew that her daughter would have no chance at going to school. When crawl swimming, even having a bit more surface to push off of can drastically reduce your lap time. Having longer nails can give an athlete an unfair advantage. Especially if they were artificially extended. That would probably be juged as an external body modification, even in small swimming leagues. Other than that, the rest of it was fun to watch! Take the time you need to make the next one. And if you ever know you need a break, just say so. Most of us will understand if you simply need some time. We all do sometimes 😅

Looking at the zoomed in part, it's pretty clear that these are nail extensions, which is essentially like taking 10 miniature flippers and putting them on the ends of your fingers. It also makes them pointy-er which means it's easier to break the surface of the water. It's probably not a big advantage, but it definitely is a competitive advantage. On the Subway one, there is a much simpler explanation. There are usually like 8 Subways within like 10 miles of each other. They are competing with each other to the point they've overcrowded, that's why they can't do the $5 Footlong deal, and so the Franchisees are being told by Corporate "You need to keep the prices and deals down" meanwhile they can barely turn a profit using all the other products.
