6:56 It’s actually 9. While PEMDAS does suggest that you multiple first before you divide, multiplication and division actually have the exact same priority in the orders of operation. When you see both of them appear, you work from left to right so you divide first before multiplying. The same goes for addition and subtraction.

The real answer is "this is why nobody doing higher math uses the division symbol". You can just stop worrying about whether multiplication and division have equal precedence and let the fact that a fraction bar is inherently also a grouping symbol sort everything out. Or, if you only have room for one line, use a negative exponent so it's all multiplication.

7:00 9 is correct because division and multiplication are on the same level. The 1 results from a comfort feature on certain Cassio calculators where it prioritizes multiplication when there is no multiplication sign. EDIT: The replies are going crazy, so before you defend 1 being correct, please do proper research on the topic, and remember that StandUp Maths featured a Cassio calculator in their video about how it makes pi appear for no reason in a particular equation. EDIT 2: I was incorrect. I looked it up and this is what Wikipedia says. “In some of the academic literature, multiplication denoted by juxtaposition (also known as implied multiplication) is interpreted as having higher precedence than division, so that 1 ÷ 2n equals 1 ÷ (2n), not (1 ÷ 2)n.”
@Junimeek
@Junimeek 3 жыл бұрын
Although × and ÷ being on the same level is true, remember the equation has Parentheses, which is prioritized over both. We have to distribute that 2 to the (2+1) first, which gives us 6 [because 2×2+2×1=6]. Then comes dividing the 6 by the 6, which gives a final answer of 1. Most (if not, all) phone calculators don't follow the order of operations correctly, and instead just do things in the order it was typed in. The phone did 6÷2 first, which is 3. Then, it distributes it to the (2+1), which would equal 9. This is why you have to be careful with order of operations lol

6:56 Division before multiplication. Division is a _non-commutative_ operation, which means that the order of its inputs matter. It thus requires proportionately more effort to calculate correctly, and should therefore be prioritized. Performing non-commutative operations first will also enforce computing the equation from left to right. Edit: To wit; 6/2(2+1) = 6/2(3) = 3*3 = 9 To get 1 as an answer for this equation, 6/(2(2+1)) would need to have been given. This is not the case. The answer is 9.

6:57 Actually no, the phone is correct. It took me a bit to remember (I've been out of school and haven't had the need of anything beyond basic math in years), but you do not do multiplication before division, because multiplication and division have the same priority. PEMDAS does make it a little confusing, but they have the same priority because, in reality, they are the same thing. Any division operation can be written as multiplying by a fraction. For example, 6 divided by 2 (have to write that out because my keyboard doesn't have a divide by symbol) is equivalent to 6 * 1/2 (that's 6 times 1 half). Likewise, a multiplication operation can be rewritten as dividing by a fraction. 6 divided by 1/2 is equivalent to 6 * 2. In summary, division and multiplication are the same thing, and are only seen as separate because (we believe) it's easier to learn them separately. Because of this, whichever one is first in the equation is done first.

@@Starwort : That's a needless distinction. If you want the multiplication done first, you can simply put it in parentheses and achieve the same thing. Having a difference between implicit and explicit multiplication only serves to needlessly complicate things, causing unnecessary and potentially harmful confusion, as seen in this post. You may be right by technicality, I'm not sure, but if so this is a failure of accepted mathematical rules. Furthermore, it's one that would likely not be too difficult to fix, as almost no one actually knows that's a rule. It was _certainly_ never mentioned in all my years of math class. Honestly this is one of the biggest problems academics suffers from. A lack of clarity plagues every field. It's gotten so bad that just a few months ago I was reading a scientific paper and noticed that they (correctly) used the word "depth" to refer to two distinct properties of a convolutional neural network, with nothing to indicate which property they were referring to or even that there _were_ two separate properties. Such a lack of clarity makes advanced subjects unnecessarily hard for new scholars to approach and leads to confusion. At the very least effort should be made to put all these different terms in a dictionary. I've even seen science deniers use the lack of said technical definitions in any medium accessible to the general public to argue that experts in a subject are somehow the ones who don't know what they're talking about.

That is... not entirely correct. It's a safe way of arriving at the correct conclusion, yes, but there's other paths you can take. The order of multiplication and division actually doesn't matter if you treat the multiplication or division symbols as prefixes assigned to the number, similar to plus and minus for positive and negative numbers. Let's analyse this a bit. 6 / 2 (2 + 1) This an unclean and confusing way of writing the term because it's easy to get some of the rules mixed up. 6 / 2 * (2 + 1) This is a clearer way of writing the same term. 6 * (2 + 1) / 2 This is a different way of writing the same term. Let's solve this one, in the deliberately "wrong" order. 6 * (2 + 1) / 2 = 6 * (2 / 2 + 1 / 2) = 6 / 2 * 2 + 1 / 2 * 6 = 6 * 1 + 3 = 9 As you can see, I did everything in a strange order, yet still arrived at the correct result. You can do this when you know the rules of mathematics.

@@uniqueplatypus7435 I did not. I used valid rules of mathematics and I can justify every step if need be. "PEMDAS" is a simplified version of the rules designed for use by people that don't know the precise rules yet. It's so easy to follow that little children can do it before they know the reasons for why things are the way they are. As I said, it's a safe way to arrive at the correct conclusion, and the "PEMDAS" rules themselves follow the _real_ rules, but they are much more restrictive than the real rules.

You do the division and multiplication in the same step, and since 2(3) is just normal multiplication, it’s not done until the “multiplication/division” step, in which the division is done first because it comes sooner. The math looks like this: 6/2(2+1) 6/2(3) OR 6/2*3 3(3) OR 3*3 9 For the answer to be 1, the equation would look like this: 6/(2(2+1))

The problem with pedmas and bodmas is, that it says multiplication before division and addition before subtraction. I learned that brackets just represent a number, so you have to solve them first from innermost to outermost, then multiplication and division simultaneously from left to right and then addition and subtraction simultaneously from left to right. In my opinion, pedmas and bodmas actually make you worse at maths because they imply things that aren't true
@gladeare

@@kenotellkamp7973 Also it becomes a lot simpler when you keep in mind that "/2" == "*0.5". To add to that, people often don't keep in mind that in e.g. "6/2*3" the two is not an "independent" number, but only the value of the "/" operator. you can't do 2*3 first, because there's not a "2" there, but a "(1)/2".
3 жыл бұрын
@@kenotellkamp7973 1) It's PEMDAS, not PEDMAS. 2) In BODMAS, the division is first. 3) Neither of that matters, because rest is just like you said. In both cases it's "Multiplication and Division" and "Addition and Subtraction" (meaning they're grouped and have same priority). PEMDAS and BODMAS are only mnemonics, but some people take the order too literally and fail to understand the correct order of operations. Some people also interpret Brackets/Parenthesis as "multiply whatever is next to them without explicit multiplication symbol", because they don't realize it's still multiplication, only the symbol is hidden/implicit. I'm not from English speaking country, so I've never heard of PEMDAS or BODMAS when I was learning math neither did we had similar mnemonic. We simply learned the order of operations as it goes, which to be honest, isn't that difficult. Especially when those operations are introduced gradually during elementary school and not all at once.
@trunkuza
@trunkuza 3 жыл бұрын
@ because M&D and A&S are together on their own priority level, there are four ways to acronym the process: PEDMAS, PEDMSA, PEMDAS, PEMDSA; the mnemonic "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" is the only thing informing people that the acronym "has to be" one way or another and, ironically, is part of why people forget that the M and the D (and the A and the S) are levels instead of a concrete hierarchy. Someone somewhere at some point suggested replacing the whole thing with GEMA (Grouping, Exponentials, Multiplicative operations {since division is able to be written as multiplying by a fraction}, Additive operations {since subtraction is able to be written as adding a negative}).

The calculator did the multiplication before the division, which you're not supposed to do, clearly the calculator hasn't heard of BIDMAS before. Edit: If you do not know how to work out these types of equations, use BIDMAS: Brackets - Anything within brackets goes first Indices - Stuff like 3 to the power of 2 or 5 to the power of 6 (written as 3^2 and 5^6 respectively) Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction (Don't really have to explain these last four)
