it's not good for anyone. but I suppose it's easy to see where it comes from. I mean... looking at children's toys alone ... girls get groomed into wanting nothing but motherhood, into seeing motherhood as their sole purpose and only reason for their existance. and it often takes careful parents and other parenting grown ups to shield little girls from that. I don't want to excuse toxic mums here. but I see a bigger picture.

I suspect a lot of it comes from the same place Keranism seems to comes from; It used to be something they could use to both validate their self worth and wield power over people. Mothers get benefits, trust, empathy, justification, special treatment, on top of the automatic "pretty privileged" society has given them purely for the sake of being female. The moment all that clout and power dries up, they become ravenous in their desperate attempts to pour any old oil on the wound. The facade is gone, and only the demanding brat remains, regardless of context or reason.

One thing that I've heard with generational trauma is that a lot of people want to be "better than their parents," which leads to small changes over time, but that trauma is still passed on. It takes a lot more courage to heal from the trauma and to refuse not to give any onto another person. I'm in that process now, and I'm solidly not having children until I'm healed from what my parents did to me

@@caicat722 My generation fanned the flames of a reverse version of child abuse that became very common. George Carlin (God rest his soul) dubbed it "Child Worship". The epidemic of adults who grew up thinking that they are smarter than they were, are more special than they are, and so extremely passive of that form of thinking that Karens got their on term ("Karen") and thus they are confidentially open about who and what they are. Going the other direction without guidance has blowback, too. Lots of my generation also forced public schools to lower their standards for grading because their kids got bad grades... instead of helping their kids study or just accepting their kid is a C or D student. "Why won't this college accept me? I have a 3.8 GPA"... well, son, that's because being an A or B student in your school is very easy.

For the record, the mom saying "Yes I am" when being called awful was NOT self-awareness. It was guilt tripping and strawmaning. My mom does it all the time when her behavior is called out. "Because I'm the worst mother ever, right?" She wanted her kid to say "No, you're not." in order to deflect from whatever she was called out for.

My biomom did this too. I eventually just started agreeing with her. She got a former friend to call me to “catch up,” which was really just so former friend could talk up biomom. Probably on speaker in the same room. “She’s so sad, she wants to reconnect, but she says she thinks you just want her to die.” “I’m surprised she still knows me so well after all these years, because that’s exactly how I feel! I’ll be very happy when she dies. Probably gonna throw a party.” “…are you serious?” “Absolutely. She’s already produced the only thing of value she ever will. The only way she can enrich the world now would be through her absence.” The harassment stopped after that. And yes, I’m really going to throw that party. My real (step) mom will be there.

I was talking to an acquaintance recently and someone had told her about my oldest kid’s situation, which boils down to they’re gonna live with me probably for the rest of their life. Her comment… “Oh that is just so wonderful! I would love it if my son had (condition)!” …wtf lady?! Of course I don’t mind my kid living with me but the condition causes him to struggle… A lot. I had my mom try the "you are a tenent from now on" bullshit with me before. Malicious Compliance is a bitch. I had her on the hook for thousands on repairs to the house because if i was a tenant she had to fix them. Also whenever she wanted me to do chores i told her I will get to them when i get to them, as my landlord she doesn't have that sort of granular say on when or even what chores I do. On top of that when rent came due, i just refused to pay and she was required by law to give me 30 day notice before kicking me out. It gave me about 2 months to get out of there 😂

My mother did something kinda similar with me. Basically I argued that I never see anything of my fathers childcare money (400$) and I had to pay for a lot of things myself with my pocket money and savings. So she gave me that money and I guess wanted to see how long I would survive?! I didn’t have to pay rent or electricity and water, but I would’ve made an agreement if she wanted to. I did. However pay for my own food, my phone, clothes, hygiene products, school supplies, electronic devices and such. I spent around 250$ per month and thus saved a lot. Then one month she just gave me 200$ without any explanation. When I asked her about it she got mad which ended in her throwing me out of the house to live with my dad.

My mom beat me when I was 8 for ASKING for a dress, had no idea what the internet or LGBT was. Then she forced me into the closet when I got caught kissing boys at 12. Now she thinks it was the internet that "brainwashed me" and "it was so sudden." Editing my Edit for Clarification: Thank you for the support. I am a Transwoman, my grandmother is 70 but has 1 Brother alive who is gay and been with his partner for nearly 60 years now. The other died during the aids crisis in America by the hospital refusing to treat him because he was gay. My grandma doesn't understand how her daughter, my mother, is so awful. I have a chance at being happy in spite of everything that has happened to me. I make music and try to work on these emotions everyday. It's more then difficult but it's why I appreciate the support when it does come. Even if it's a few thousand people enjoying my content as an escape or to feel seen or heard.

Also due to the kid being a kid, he will likely go to Juvie and get counseling for a few years that he should have gotten sooner. For me. It was kinda in the middle. I grew up as a happy child until I turned 13. Then my parents started asking me for help for everything. Even if there was someone in the room with them. Then at 16 I figured out I was gay. And tried to see how my parents reacted to LGBTQ people. Didn’t end well. Still haven’t come out to them because I’m not out of the house yet. Then at 20 I figure out that I’m a trans female. So I’ve been bottling up my emotions. To the point where I can’t smile anymore.

Not all religious people are nutjobs, Both my neighbors are pretty devout Catholic Christians, knowing very well, that I don't attend church - and we still see eye to eye and have a good neighborly relationship. A lot of my customers are also religious, even a few of the local priests frequent my shop. On the other hand - I live in Germany and even living in a more conservative part is a far cry from what you hear from America.

I had an ex with family that was pretty toxic and it bled into our relationship. His mom and his sister were very rude to me and my ex didn’t do anything to defend me. His mom even threatened to call campus police (I lived on campus in college and she didn’t know where I went to school) on me for the stupidest of reasons. Whenever my ex hung out with me, his mom would random call to cuss him out. Every call ended in a screaming match. One day it was so bad that while it was happening in public, I had to walk away because I couldn’t bear the looks people were giving us, especially me. I got a lot of pity looks from people.

My grandma dragged me to her church before I could even walk. A church where they tell you to dance when they worship which is supposed to make it more fun but they completely ignore kids with disabilities (except the obvious ones like not being able to walk) and I have asthma. When I was about 6 or 7 years old, I was actually able to dance so they made me dance no matter what. I would be exhausted or barely able to breath and they would just say "just breath and dance, you'll be fine!" I'm so glad that when I was 11 I realized that Christianity was not making any sense and that the church was being abusive to me and escaped that church and am now atheist.

Thank you for actually acknowledging that all three are at fault. The amount of comments pinning the blame solely on the school's negligence and his shitty mom while completely glossing over the fact that the kid's a monster is honestly repulsive. One thing I've noticed somewhat recently is there are a lot of people that view children as solely extensions of their parents. As in they don't see the children as human beings, but rather the property of their parents. I started to note how prevalent this attitude is with the talks of government funded school lunches. People will say they oppose school lunches funded by tax dollars because a child going hungry is "a personal responsibility issue"... Which is just insane to me. Personal responsibility?! Who's?! The kid?! Because of its the personal responsibility of the parent, then doing nothing to help feed the kid makes no sense from an angle of personal responsibility... Unless you consider the kid property and not a person. I think there are a shocking number of people that hold this view point... And I think that is where at lot of this parent entitlement comes from. They never consider that *they* chose to have a kid and the kid never got to choose anything. They then act as if the kid owes them a life debt for bringing them into the world and paying to raise them when the kid had zero say in that. If you start from the premise that the kid is a person who unfortunately doesn't have the mental, physical, or legal tools to live their own life... Then a good deal of this entitlement becomes crystal clear how backwards it is. It isn't charity for these parents, it is investing... And they expect a return on their investment. There are a lot of people who should never be parents. I might even wager to say most couples aren't cut out for it.

Fun Fact: I recently talked to school friend of mine who's a lawyer. In Austria it is technically illegal to post a picture of your child online. The child is not your property and just because it can't understand or say no, does not give you freedom to violate their rights. Of course this whole thing is a massive grey area. If you follow the law though, you would have to ask the family court every time you want to post a picture. He told me he really wanted a client that had a problem with that, just to see if he could push it through. He is confident about it though.

20:20 my dad used to be super abusive to me, mentally and physically, and was very anti-lgbtq. The last time we fought, I told him how I spent my entire childhood wanting to die, and that the day I found out I was allowed to live as my true self, I wanted to live, and that if he loves me that should make him happy no matter how invested he was in my being a specific gender. He stormed off and five minutes later he came back and apologized, it was the second time I ever saw him cry. Once it finally hit him that I could have been dead, he completely turned around because he actually loves me, even though he was an abusive asshole because he was raised in a toxic environment, he forced himself to change because he didn't want to lose me and he realized he was about to, and he changed basically overnight, that fast, he let go of all his selfish demands and just started treating me like a normal person for once. If losing your kid doesn't scare you more than watching them change, which is a natural part of the human condition that makes us a stronger species, then you never loved them, really. Parents who refused to let their kids change and develop into individuals, are the exact reason why today's generations can't handle adulthood and have crippling anxiety. Millennials were the first to really be hit by this and we get blamed for being meek and anxious when Boomers intentionally conditioned us to be meek and anxious for their benefit. They love having a sensitive kid who is easy to bully, then get mad if that kid is easily bullied as an adult and never gets anywhere in life. Every time we tried to grow up, parents flipped out on us, so we stopped trying to be adults, and then parents flip out on us for not supporting them, that's a toxic generation disconnect. Their parents rejoiced when they moved out of their home to be independent, now Boomers lose their mind when their kids move on from them. Even though I got my parents to change and grow and learn, their past attitudes toward change left lasting damage. I wasn't allowed to even go to an extracurricular club after school, now I'm terrified to take on more responsibility because they only wanted to enroll me in the bare minimum. I never even took the SAT because it costs $25 and they didn't want to pay for "extra unnecessary things", so if anything takes a little too much effort, I back out of it just like they made me back out of anything exciting or challenging that I wanted to try. And they apologize over and over, because now they're calm and level headed and understand that they often made the wrong chocies for me. But though the apology means a lot to me in my heart, it can't take back the conditioning they left in me, and this is the biggest problem with my generation and thise after, Boomer parents make their kids afraid to ask for anything extra, or to engage in anything new and different. So then when those kids grow up and have to move to a new city to get that big career changing new job, they're going to back out, because when mom and dad didn't want them going to summer camp, they taught them to be afraid of travelling too far from home without mom and dad, afraid of making a commitment that might fail, all those little things parents say to their kids to keep them from doing something. "Don't try out for [sport], look at this video of this man breaking his leg playing it, we don't have health insurance for that". Okay, now I'll never ever do sports. "You can't go on that trip, planes are dangerous and you can't go that far from us even though you're 17 and nearly grown up" okay, then I'll be afraid to ever fly a plane, and I'll have panic attacks going more than an hour outside of town. Is that what they want? Their kids so scared of change that they stay kids? You have to embrace change, even drastic change, it's how humans grow up.

As someone who grew up christian and is still one to this day, i remember that my parents took me to church with them. but luckily, they had special children’s services, which was mostly just a daycare for kids while their parents attended the grown-up service. I was raised Evangelical and my mom sobbed when my youngest sibling and I came out as queer and when I told her I was a polytheist and no longer Christian (had an unbaptism too just to solidify for me the breaking of the abusive system I grew up in). I'm openly agender, but my sibling is not. Mom still calls me by my birthname instead of MY name. Mom still believes we're living in sin and have turned our backs on God and blah blah blah but she still tries to have a relationship with us and we've just learned not to talk about certain things with her. Our dad is another story and I'm pretty sure he'd have beaten us had we come out still living in that house. He wonders why I don't talk to him or share things with him. But I have a general idea based off of past experiences how he'd react if I told him I planned on getting top surgery and a hysterectomy as soon as I possibly can. It wouldn't be pretty. If you can't fully unconditionally love your child and use your fucked up version of your religion to abuse and berate them then don't fucking have kids because you clearly aren't mature enough or trustworthy enough to have children. Dad is the reason I went into therapy initially as soon as I became an adult. Been in therapy for over a decade. Child abuse I've worked on and am honestly more or less recovered from. The PTSD from other things partially stemming from him, not so much but I'm getting there. Also really friggin tired of people saying organized religion is bad and evil and blah blah blah when 99% of the time they mean Christianity. Just say Christianity. Religion isn't a bad thing. It's how humans can bastardize and use it for control. Religion is a personal thing and should remain personal.

@@t1ff4nyall3n In Catholicism it is a peace of paper with your signature on it, delivered to the church where you were baptised. Then priest will try to ask you "Why?", "Are you sure?" and so on, in mine case the guy was so bored and spewing such banalities that I had answered with similar banalities so he would just f&^k off. Then the paper goes to the bishop, and they have to agree within a month and took you out of their books. Sometimes they try to forget about the document and you would need a phone call or two, but most often it goes without a hitch. Again this is Roman Catholicism, as for other Christian denominasions, you would need to check is it similar, or are there differences. It is basically self excommunication in technical terms, and one of the best decisions I ever made.

Before I came out as trans and still identified as a mom, I visited my mom on mother's day, and instead of her thinking about the fact that I was a mom and maybe wanted something nice, she made me and my siblings make breakfast for her. I think she later said that I'll just have to wait until my kids are old enough to do the same for me. My kids were 2 and 0 years old at the time. Fun Fact: In the US, grandparents can only sue for visitation under certain circumstances. 1.) They haven't seen the child for over 60 days and the parents are divorcing 2.) Their access has been restricted by 1 parent after the 2nd parent has passed away 3.) The child actually lived with them for 6 months, and they filed within 24 months of the child living with them. So that mom suing her kid for visitation after the kid cut her out of their life? Even if the kid was related to her, the case would not go very far at all because the court would rule in the favor of the parent(s). But that case would be tossed immediately and the mom's lawyer would be banging their head against the desk for her stupidity. And if the child brought enough hard evidence, might be able to get a restraining order for the physical abuse they suffered.

My parents are both atheists. They still made sure I knew about the general branches of Christianity the rest of their respective families believed in, as well as about other religions, in an age appropriate and free-thinking way. I went through several phases of spirituality, with gentle guidance and lots of information at hand. Several of my friends were raised extremely similarly. I'm an atheist, my best friend is agnostic, and our other friends are a mix of religious and non-religious people. Everyone gets along fine and we have great conversations about religion and belief, mostly BECAUSE we were allowed to choose freely for ourselves without being forced into anything specific as children, with appropriate knowledge of what the different religions themselves entailed and what they meant to our families. Of course I also know people who were forced into or out of certain religions, almost all of those ended up going through an extremely rebellious phase where they rejected everything they were ever forced to do, say or think. Forcing someone never works.

My parents are atheists as well- but my mom was a junior high teacher at a Catholic school for 25 years, and she loved teaching there. I went to it for preschool and kindergarten, and had no problem with taking part in prayer and Friday church services, despite being an atheist as well. I understood that my teachers would be sad if I didn’t. I’ve also had several best friends over the years who were believers of various religions. My problem isn’t with religions themselves, it’s with people who use their religion as an excuse for bigotry- an excuse to hurt and dehumanize others. Your parents sound wonderful.

By and large religion influences culture. So knowing or, even better, understanding religion helps a lot in understanding cultures. Not only ones foreign to you - but your own, as it most likely was (or still is) inlfuenced by one or another belief. This was the first mothers day in a new state. We just moved & my brother is now 1200 miles away. We woke up & I gave my mom her mothers day gift, she barely blinked at it. She was more upset with my brother "not calling her" for mothers day. We woke up at 8, my brother woke up at 1 & my parents went to the beach from 10am to 2pm. When he woke up he called her immediately... twice. Dad told me when they got home that my mother ignored his calls ON PURPOSE. The woman is a giant child.

When I was in junior high I'd go to my friend's house because our moms worked together and it was easier to consolidate children at one house until they got off work. Because my friend was the eldest she'd have to clean the house before her mom came home. The younger siblings would wait until like 3 minutes until the moms arrive to make messes on purpose to get the eldest in trouble because eldest said "No you can't play with that knife, it's not a toy" and things like that. It would ALWAYS work because while we're desperately cleaning the mess they'd run to another room to make another and eldest was always screamed at by her mom. I wasn't required to help clean but I usually did because I felt so bad for her. No matter how much we tried the demons would always get her in trouble and even when the mom was home the youngest cut her own hair and yelled "SHUT UP" at us (we didn't even notice she did it, we were just chilling on the couch) we were sent outside for bullying her. Normally not a problem but it was summer in Texas and we couldn't come inside for like 3 hours. Funny enough that mom abandoned her whole family after popping out 5 kids. Eldest and her dad had to raise the kids.

As someone who comes from the opposite experience (loving and supportive parents), please don't take the blame on yourself. I often see people with good relationships with their parents say things like, "but it's your Mum, you should try to make it work" etc, but if there is any situation where you shouldn't be expected to be the 'better person' or suffer in silence, it's your parents. You're already being the better person by not returning the abuse you've experienced. You are not obliged to spend time with your parents to let them make you miserable just because they are the reason for your existence or they fed and housed you or some other bull. That's literally not even the bare minimum. With good parents, you want to spend time with them, it's enjoyable (barring specific sad circumstances). If your parents don't give you that, try to find it elsewhere but don't feel like a bad person for cutting them out. In the long run it's the healthiest option and I have massive respect for people who manage it because I've seen how difficult it can be for some of my friends. Also, if you have the resources, I strongly recommend trying to find a good psychologist.

Same! My mother is horrible in every way. During the divorce hearing, a random woman was going in and out of the courtroom to feed info to my younger siblings who weren't of age yet (17 and 16). I agree 1000% that children should not go to church when they're not even old enough to know what's right for them in any sense of the word! I was raised and forced to go to an evangelical/pentecostal/apostolic, which is a lot! It was a good church as in the people were good and I made a lot of good friends but they taught us a lot things that have stuck with me my whole 34 years of life that are quite traumatic still. I cant enjoy the naughties without the anxiety of going to hell or bad things happening... I'm still a Christian but I've deconstructed in a way. But I still have to overcome a lot of teachings that I don't agree with and I will never and have never forced my children to go to church! Sorry this was so long sometimes you just hear something that hits you right in the heart and you've just gotta put you're feeling somewhere and try to heal!

Very true. My mother never wanted me to experience the religious guilt/trauma she did being raised in a Catholic school. She didn't make me do Sunday school, would never send me to a religious school in general, etc. She made a point to take me to different religions' places of worship and wanted me to figure out what I believed myself. But even the limited exposure of going to church sometimes, reading about it, and knowing her beliefs still input some things in my brain that I've had to work through. Particularly about sex and self pleasure.

While I agree with what the texter said, the comment later quoted is only mostly right (they additionally said mass is no place to bring a kid): I do believe mass is a good place to bring kids... ONCE. Once for all major religions to be exact. In fact, that is something we have as part of the school-curriculum (albeit for teenagers - So it's still kids, but I can agree that *6* might be a bit early. At least do it at an age where there's a chance for them to remember it at the least _vaguely,_ rather than be entirely amnesic about and non-comprehending) to make class visitations to each house of worship to learn basic contextual etiquette (men takes of hats for some, yay sexism!), see the architecture, and partake in a mock mass. Again, mostly for ceremonial etiquette (line up to eat a piece of paper disguised as bread and a sip of sour wine. OR you can perform a specific sign to opt out of the torture without disruption ceremony. Also useful if you have any diseases that can transmit through saliva etc.), but also so you have some context of what it involves when you encounter ppl ascribing to the faiths in your future life). And as a historically christian country (somehow we are majority atheist AND christian over here xD) they do receive some additional bias through sheer historical traditions. Such as how there has simply been more churches built historically, and a tradition of renting out the locations for some non-religious activities, which results in most schools using those locales for graduations and year-ends (good acoustics, plenty of seating, and cheap). In other words, my butt is well-accustomed with how extremely uncomfortable pews are to sit on, and I got a fairly good grasp on a specific handful of hymns written/translated by Britt G Hallqvist (having a collection of psalm-books with lyrics provided to everyone without hassle, and a musician handy and cheap to hire who knows most in it, means picking songs from that collection is both easiest and cheapest. And they are honestly not bad songs. What else would we sing anyway? The national anthem? HAH! We are swedes, not patriotic!). Or how at 14 it is tradition to spend a couple days there to learn about the faith and become officially christian (called "confirmation"; this is btw why we are majority christians despite being majority atheists. Most of us are christians on *paper*). Overall? I think I gained culturally by all of those school visits and other traditions. Doesn't make me any less of an atheist, but I can imagine sheer exposure at least made me much more tolerant and respectful of (reasonable) ppl who aren't? Cause that's how humans generally work and react to exposure (but I admittedly have no method to know _for sure_ whether or not I would be any less so if I _hadn't_ had the exposure).

Im glad my mom has gotten much better. About 5 years ago, she would fall under this category of crazy, but she got therapy, my siblings and I got therapy, and we all found we get along better not living together. My mom went from ready to call tge police if I didnt answer a text in minutes to now texting me something like "proof of life text please" like once every 1-2 weeks if we havent called or texted, and she gives me like 24 hours to respond before she calls me. She has bipolar and severe anxiety, and was very controlling amd obsessive when I was a kid, but she finally got enough therapy to find herself outside of being a mom. So now I no longer feel the pressure to validate my mom all the time like I did as a kid. I endured way, way too many guilt trips like shown on this sub. Im the oldest and am 22 now. I hated her from 12-17, but we slowly healed our relationship after I went off to college and she realized she had to chill out if she wanted me to come visit her and maintain a relationship.

@elizakarnopp8921 I just saw this reply but thank you! Honestly, most of it was seeing her put in the effort, and it took me a lot of therapy to forgive her and move forward in our relationship. At this point it's more of a friendship than a parent/child relationship, but it's better that way I think for both of us. If she hadn't changed significantly and put in the work in therapy, I don't know that we would have any relationship today, because it was hanging on by a thread when I left for college 5 years ago. It took a ton of compassion, understanding, and long talks together with her and my therapist to come to a place where I enjoy spending time with my mom now, but she's a completely different person now that she's mentally stable, which I'm very thankful for.
