7:25 I worked in construction and electrical work before, and I can confirm that the lights are supposed to be centered. However, sometimes the holes for the lights are cut from the attic so as to not damage any wiring or plumbing, so they don't always end up perfect. It is, however, VERY frustrating when it gets cut wrong.

Yes that is true, I am also an electrician, but sometimes when you have a small coridor I will install the light on one side because a shelf, dresser will come in the space and the light will be not centered on your walk space

But, I see it as the offcenter light is good for dispelling shadow. When light are on center, everything in the room will have shadow, but if the light are shine sideways, some items will not have shadow. Just a thought u know

Lights are also usually attached to studs, and those aren’t centered they’re spaced and we just put them up starting from an arbitrary wall.

Hey EmKay, Surveying technician here: Why are lights never centered you ask? Welp, for some reason the architects decided to let the electricians choose the placements of the lights - which will then be the shortest cable route possible. Causing them to be at random places Or the architects do it themselves and come up with really weird places, patterns or just weirdness. Lil story about it: I work at a jobsite in the Netherlands for the second biggest underground bike-parking, and guess what. Not a single light is either in a straight line, or is centered. To make matters worse, the people who had to construct the roof didn't lay down the panels correctly, so now al the seams are tilted, while the pillars are straight but not parallel with the wall, and the lights are tilted the other way, straight, not centered at all and not in parallel with the wall either. There also isn't any pattern in them, they are also literally just scattered around. To make it even worse, they people who had to put down the lining on the ground and such. Did not center the numbers in the walkways, failed to properly line the arrows and literally turned the numbers upside down; meaning you need to look down the hallways to see the number. I do not have OCD, but do have a keen eye for patterns and if things are not in line this whole jobsite annoys me to all hell.

I worked as an electrician, and never did we moved light for shorter cable route, the culprit is most of the time architect being weird, small companies not having a choice, or greedy assholes who want to save money on cable (which isn't even that costly, well, in my country at least)

Carpenter here, alot of the times I've seen the lights be off center because the bottom cords of roof trusses are right where the light Should be, and you can't cut/drill into the bottom cord as it's load bearing. So the lights have to be off center, unfortunate but the only option.

Part on the reason a lot of lights aren't perfectly centered is because when you're installing the housings or bracelet you need to put them between two ceiling joists. Also when installing heavy light fixtures like some ceiling fans and chandeliers you need a spanner housing that connects to bolth joists that way the sheet rock doesn't have to support the whole weight.

I'm an electricians apprentice in Germany and can answer your lamp question. Many lamps have a hole for the cable which isn't always centred. Even if theres room on top of the lamp to route the cable, the cable is often not long enough to route it the perfect way that every lamp is parallel. I had that case a little while back and i hate it too...

I'm not a builder/electrician/architect/whatever, but I have been involved in contracting jobs that involved ceiling light fixtures usually setting up network infrastructure at the same time; *generally speaking* wiring that goes to a ceiling light has to come up through one wall or another and through the ceiling to connect. If you put the light closer to the wall where the wire is placed, you save some tiny amount of money on wire, and in an era of hypercapitalism where you try to eke every penny of possible profits out of your jobs, this makes some sense. Also running wire is almost always a pain in the ass, especially if drywall has already been done, so the less of it you have to do the better.

the best reason I can think of for why some lights end up off-center would be that one of the ceiling studs was positioned in the middle of the hallway running lengthways, meaning that when the electrical box is attached off to the side of it, it ends up off-center, and therefore so does the light

Lights aren’t centered because the electrical wires are set before interior walls of a building/ house so moving the wire (including light) would cost thousands of doallars which is just illogical I’m a jr architect and my uncle is a electrician and gives me lectures every time I see him
