I watched this video when you first uploaded it. At that time, I was not nor had I ever been a rabbit owner. I just like bunny videos. Well now 9-1-17, I find myself watching this video again, now as a proud owner of a 3 month old lion head doe (Lola) who I adore. I have had her for one week. It's definitely time to litter train!!

I use a litter box with a cover which seems to be popular for cats now a days. But they are even better for rabbits because the cover will make rabbits feel more safe and secure. The only problem with them is that they have plastic flaps leading in and out of the litter box which may get your rabbit confused. But you can easily pop the flap out so its just like a open entrance! Total win win.

88 cent dish pan from WM full of pine or hardwood horse litter pellets is what I used until recently. Unfortunately now one of my does has taken to going all over the place randomly since her 4 week old babies have left the nest box and begun running around harassing her. Lots of cleaning up lately. Luckily I don't have a lot of rabbits, I guess.

Give a bunny at least 2 litter boxes because my bunny has a day spot by the window in the living room and the he nests in our closet (his closet) at night. If your rabbit hasn't been fixed then I highly recommend it if you love your bunny then it's a must do.

I have been hoping you would do a comparison video. I ordered 6 of the medium KW boxes but haven't received them yet. I guess I should have waited for your review. I do like the KW medium boxes - they're very sturdy and plenty big. I have 16 of their boxes so still use quite a few with my bunnies. It's just my preference, you may like the KW ones better! :)

We use a cat litter box, but line it with news paper.. Her Hay goes one end so she can poop and pee whilst she eats (like most rabbits do) with no mess. Seems to work for us and cookie the Rabbit.

I just use a large cat litter box with feline pine litter with tons of hay on top for my Dwarf Bun Henny to graze in all day. She never kicks or make a mess. It’s always worked the best for her & me. It’s the most easiest to clean. No extra grate to clean. I don’t have to get a separate feeder either since she enjoys chopping on hay right from the box. Which is quite large to accommodate eating, pooping & peeing.

It's OK to use the very first litter box with the plastic resting mat, except you put a pet sheet under it so that the urine is immediately absorbed, dried and deodorized, as well as the poo's odor too. The sheet last way longer than any litter and the rabbit won't chew on things they aren't supposed to ingest. You just need to be sure they can't access the sheet, which isn't a problem as you can fold underneath or cut it. I've been using that kind of litter for 7 years now, it costs less that buying new litter all the time, not even speaking about how heavy and enormous those packs can be and how hard it is to throw these kilos of soiled stuff away.

I use the Jumbo Scatterless litter box with several babies in one cage or two juniors housed together. You will likely just have to clean it daily. Some people prefer using a cat-sized litter box with no grate and tall walls - would be cheap enough to try if you wanted.

I use a scoopable cat litter in a standard open litter box; the concern with cat litter is that rabbits may ingest it, however neither of my girls have shown ANY interest in eating it. I also trained them not to toss the litter everywhere by grunting and "thumping" when they did it so they knew I was displeased with the behavior, and when they would use the box without digging, I would give positive reinforcement through praise and pets. Not all rabbits will respond so positively, I understand, but I wanted to share what worked for me. (I have a bonded pair of does, one is a 2-year-old Fawn Silver, and the other is a 1-and-a-half-year-old double maned REW Lionhead; both are spayed.)

I know you wrote this a year ago but just wanted to let you know that I use compressed pine pellets for horse stalls. They are bunny safe and only $6 and some change for a 40 lb bag. It lasts me about 3 1/2 months and I also use a cat litter box, not the tiny bunny ones. I wish kw cages made their boxes higher than 2 inches, to last longer. Sometimes, I would take a box that has similar dimensions but higher than 2 inch sides and place it inside of the kw large cage to give me 4 inches of height. Which bunny has no issue jumping to. I’d also line the tray area with a garbage bag but she chews it and that’s why I needed a metal box, because she chews.

We are going to be making a new hutch for our rabbit. We are waiting to find a thrift stone dresser. So we don't have the plans made. Our bunny was using her litter box all the time. We always kept it clean. But once she peed on the floor and we didn't catch it. Now she is outside and so we need to start over with everything. I feel bad about her being out.

I prefer cat litter box because I dont use wire I disagree with wire but I never have had a problem her digging but like having problems with them stepping on the litter I clean it ever other day and I don't get how you can have your rabbit fit in the corner box mine is 8 pounds for say I like how cat litter boxes because they are large and they should be able to do a 360 turn but like once again I am all about saving money and those litter boxes are like $15 here and the cat litter was like $3

How long would a 20 lb Feline Pine bag last? What about the 40 lb wood stove pellets? I have a 2lb dwarf bunny and I change his litter every 2 days. His litter box is 12in x 10in. 😊 I’m running out of my current litter (aspen) and need to know which product is worth it since I do live in a student apartment for the next 6 months and I wouldn’t wanna buy something that’s too big to carry when I move unless it’s worth it. I use the compressed wood pellets at TSC or Rural King (marketed for horse bedding). Other options include Carefresh Naturals and Yesterday's News.

can you use pine pellets for bunnies? looks just like the wood pellets you were using. I use them for my kitten.

There are several kinds of compressed wood pellets, so you can check what's available in your area. I would be a bit hesitant to use pine in a litter box where the bunny was in direct contact with the litter, as the pine oils may be an irritant once on the bunny. Aspen shavings or compressed paper/cardboard are probably the most benign litters.

Does anyone have any tips on how you can make a grid like that (not the kind of grid that lies right on the litter, I mean the one that's raised like the middle one) for a litter box like the one on the far left? They don't sell litter boxes with grids where I live and I don't fancy paying for shipping from Amazon. White egg crate lovers from Lowes or Home Depot work. You can cut them to size with needle nose pliers

I'm pretty confident that it would rarely be an issue, especially with breeds whose feet are well-furred like Holland lops. Most of my bunnies spend such a small amount of time in their boxes compared to others who live their entire lives on wire (I have solid floor cages). Several of my bunnies actually prefer to sleep on the grates in their litter boxes than on the solid floor or fleece pillows and resting mats. Go figure. :)

Never had an issue. The bunnies don't spend much time in the litter box, whereas no grate = messy bunny and an invitation to sleep in the litter box.

I like the Jumbo Ware Scatterless. They are on the grate so little that it isn't an issue. If you are concerned, you can get a box without a grate, but then they sit in their mess.

How do your does that are pregnant or have litters do with the litter training? And do your bucks spray? I really wanna get my rabbits off wire and I’m ok cleaning litter boxes everyday I just don’t know that I could wipe up pee all over all the cages every day.

My bucks don't spray since I have them spaced a few feet apart. Most don't have urine accidents except for occasional litter box misses. I sometimes have to adjust where the litter boxes are if I notice them trying to pee elsewhere. Some are very neat and others like to poop all over the floor.

@@HooksHollands ok, thank you! I’ve done a diy solid floor for them just temporary till I get new cages. I’ve ordered 4 high back ferret litter boxes that had great reviews. They are 14long x 12 wide x 9 tall and the front lip is 2 inches, I hope they work for my mini Rex. I plan on building the wire things like the kw litter boxes. I made sure to get squared boxes so I could. I’m also hoping I can find hay racks to hang on the back of the boxes. Right now I have some cardboard boxes lined with water proof shelf liners for thier litter boxes and no pee accidents yet but they occasionally knock some poop out of the box. I’m so happy to finally have them off wire. They’re cages currently are 3 ft x 2 ft but I was thinking about building 4ft x 2ft cages for each of them with coroplast trays. Is 4ft x 2 ft big enough? I would suggest trying a generous sized cat style litter box for large breed rabbits (or ones around 7/8+ pounds). You can get creative and make your own grate if you wanted...some people use the grid covers for commercial lights that home improvement stores sell.

I like the KW Cages nest boxes since they're metal and easy to clean the floor piece after each litter, but those wouldn't work as well for bunnies not in a heated environment during the cold months.

Hi interested in rearing a bunny. But people say they dig & eat or chew everything. Is it true? (looking to have a white bunny) Can't I let him inside the house without a cage & go out without risking damages to our cushions/settees etc ? (Because I don't like to put any animal in cages.) They do chew things, but I have been told by customers that it's pretty manageable if you get the bunny spayed/neutered around 5/6 months of age and provide plenty of items they can chew/shred/dig in. An enclosure for nighttime is usually advised, even if it's an exercise pen in a laundry room, garage, or basement. They do poop all the time, but potty training is pretty easy. Don't expect all of the poop to be in the litter box; this improves post neutering/spaying. One bunny really is fine if you are able to give a lot of your time to the bunny.

Hi I used a litter tray but my bun started peeing outside into the tray I have now made the whole of his indoor tray 80cm x 45cm into a litter tray he is an indoor bun, do you think this is too big or does it not matter how big it is?

I wouldn't make the entire cage floor into a litter box, as he'll be hopping in his business and getting all yucky. It can also be confusing to them. You might want to try a cat-sized litter box with higher sides, even if it doesn't have a grate covering the litter.

You'd probably need a large cat litter pan base. Maybe you can find a baker's cooling rack or other type of grate to fit inside and keep your bunny off the litter.

Many of my customers have litter trained bunnies in their homes. Neutering/spaying definitely helps complete the training process, and there will still likely be a few dry poo balls here and there.

Anna wire is usually only bad when used in the majority of the cage. When using something like a wire bottom litter box, it’s completely fine, and discourages sleeping in the litter box

Siona Starshine I have a lion-head dwarf bunny and ever since I have had him he has been friendly and chill. If you do get a bunny I would recommend one that is a baby so you can bond with it as it grows, like I did with Alf. Hope this helps with your decision! 😊

My bunnies' bottoms hang off that one. If you want to use a KW box, I recommend the medium, even for a dwarf breed rabbit in that pound range. The additional width seems to help a lot. I still like the plastic Ware Jumbo Scatterless litter pans better.

ok, thank you! I'm trying to find a good replacement litterbox that's metal since she has chewed her plastic one. I also am worried that if I get the medium size she wont use it as we have just gotten a new cage for her and a medium does not fit the covered area that is like a hiding spot in her cage. should I try to move her food and water down to the more open area and see if she will like it? sorry if I'm a bother, I'm just unsure of what to do. if you need any reference for what her cage is its the boomer and george tiered outdoor rabbit hutch, the purple and white one in images.

Litter goes in the litter box only. Some people try to put it on the cage floor too, but it confuses the rabbit on where to go potty. The rest of the cage can have nothing on the floor or comfort items like fleece or cardboard boxes to play on.
