In '68 I was 12 years old. I had all the Hot Wheels cars from '68-'70. Our family moved to a new town in '72 and now that I was in high school I thought I was too old for these. I gave them all away to the kid across the street before we left. Dang!

It was the Python that was originally slated to be named Cheetah, but there was a copyright issue. It was subsequently changed to Python. You can tell the base die was changed as the nameplate section is raised on Pythons because they had to alter the original base die by engraving over it thus raising the cast piece. There are a few original run Cheetahs that do exists but they are very rare. I've had the privilege of holding one in hand. They are, I believe, only red ones. The Demon was based on the real Lil Coffin custom car but was named Demon to get around copyright issues.

In 1975 I was 15 years old and by that time had a fairly decent collection of the Hot Wheels cars in a Hot Wheels case stored away in the bedroom closet.. Although at 15 you have other things on your mind instead of playing with toy cars, and now regret giving that's right giving my whole collection away to a friend of the family little boy that was around 8-9 years old. They probably would have been worth a fairly good sum these day's,but I did make a little boy happy at the time.

You have a few years on me but my story is similar. My cars got passed down to younger brothers, then to nephews. They got more play value and enjoyment than any amount of money could buy. Think about the hours and hours of entertainment that they provided rather than 'what could they be worth' nowadays =)

@@racegrooves I remember I was probably around 10-11 years old and went to spend a weekend at my aunt and uncles home. They had just one son that was 2-3 years older then me. He had a very nice collection of the Hot Wheels cars also. One in particular was the silver Boss Hoss Mustang I was looking over close. He said you really like that one huh, I said yes. He said I can get you one practically free, I have a extra mail order voucher here and all we have to do is fill it out with your name and address then mail it off. He said I"ll pay for the postage for you. About two weeks later it came in the mail to my home and I'll never forget that, I had my own BOSS HOSS Mustang. Thanks to my cousin Gary.

You know the Demon also used the name Prowler , is actually Dave Steckley’s “Lill Coffin” built at Darrel Starbirds’ Kustoms , while Steckleys was an employee . It actually is a 1932 Ford sedan , highly kustomized and powered by an early Chrysler Hemi topped with 8 2brl strombergs . It must have gone like hell , and scared the crap outta anyone brave enough to drive it , hence the name . It became a huge success with the 1/24 scale Monogram plastic model kit . While Monogram kept the original Lill Coffin name , I’ve always wondered why Mattel changed it .
@racegrooves4 жыл бұрын
Regarding the name change from Lil Coffin to The Demon, I'm sure it has to do with 'kids toys'. Parents might think it's morbid. Matchbox stopped selling their Hearse due to consumer complaints.

I have a whopping 4 and only recently got a near mint Magenta that seems to be pretty fast. I like the idea of retiring or changing classes for redline racing. Seems like there was a local race a few yrs back and they had a scale and did weight classes like within 10 grams of each other. Can't wait to see that side kick on the downhill. Oh by the way the Cheetah was on the Python base not the Demon. Hey thanks for sharing I enjoyed very much.

About half a Jammer of Noodle Heads =) I know that the staff at the Conventions can't have too many categories because they take time but 'basics' get quite a few categories. Basic cars, Funny Cars/Hot Ones, VW Bus only, and a 'theme' race which is usually basics.

Mark you accidentally erred - the Demon is based on a Tom Daniel model called 'Lil Coffin. The other name used for The Demon is Prowler. The name Cheetah, which they did not have the name rights to use, was the original name for the Redline original 16 casting Python - a totally different casting
www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g29957-d674547-i128000023-Darryl_Starbird_s_National_Rod_Custom_Hall_of_Fame_Museum-Afton_Oklahoma.html Also please note that the Lil Coffin was an actual show car. Mattel purchased Monogram and then was able to use the car as a Hot Wheel

How can you tell if you got the something from the 70s if it's not a remade fake one what to look for and how to tell if it's really viable or just a remade one by someone else to make it look the same copy of the red lines?
@chasbari3 ай бұрын
The original redlines were only manufactured in the US and Hong Kong and will be marked on the base as such. Reissues will have Malaysia, China, or some other country of manufacture even though they will have the original copyright date of first issue on the base. Wheel types, bearing, capped or through axle will also be an indicator. As to repro/restorations, those can be harder to spot because there are some very expert restorers out there. Typically they will label a restored redline as such, but sometimes you run into unscrupulous operators, or perhaps someone who bought a resto and is trying to pass it off as an original. Fake rivets are a big giveaway and there are other tests that experienced collectors will use to verify the originality of a particular car. The value of an original redline is based on the color, the condition, the lack of toning, the quality of plating on the overall car, the condition of the wheels and glass. If things like this don't add up, it gets suspicious. If you have a car with perfect paint, but the wheels are trashed, likely it has been a repaint. There are reproduction parts out there like wheels and plastic parts that the expert eye can tell the difference between, but they can fool a lot of people. A good restoration is just that and really, beyond the artistry, does not justify the asking price of a rare original. It's still a ten dollar beater brought back to life and doesn't make it worth an original in a tough color. This barely scratches the surface, though.

My question is everything I've been able to find about the car says it was released in 1974. It's a redline an dated 1969 on the metal base as well as Hong kong I've always thought it was a 1970 release car. Now I'm unsure what year the car is. Do you have any info regarding this car?
