The problem should not "racism in football" but why racists feel they can openly express their views at a football match. They hold these views at work, at the pub, walking to the match, shopping at the weekend, but only openly shout abuse and throw things at opposition players in football. What creates the atmosphere that enables them to feel more comfortable expressing this opinion in a football crowd? They are racists all the time, not just at football.

Correct. if they yell racist abuse at their television watching a game on (jnsert provider here), are you going to ban them from watching said provider?
@aliencactus720 Жыл бұрын
It is not just 'racism' it is ABUSE in general - there are still a about a 3rd of fans, depending on the club, that feel it is ok to abuse players calling them C words over and over or worse. Some banter is ok but when it crosses into abuse, that is the issue and too many clubs are also LAX about that, or they will publicly make 'kick racism out' as they are sort of obliged to otherwise they look 'racist' but then they turn a blind eye to the cavemen muppets who just want to yell abuse for no reason at players, in non-league, everyone can hear it ! One example recently, I was at the Bracknell - Chesham game, lay off game which was pretty calm and decent, then one moron, who moments earlier told his children off loudly, then commenced calling the opposition players "piricks" cnutnts and all the rest of it, thinking he was a big hardman, it was embarrassing - yet he was obvlivious - obviously lacking in braincells. Once all that culture is addressed, racism will also be addressed, it is the culture where some knuckedraggers think giving abuse is ok that is the issue really. Racism is just a symptom of it. Fans who dish out that abuse to players, should be banned for months / seasons, in the same way as any racist comment is, as invariably, it is the same kind of people doing it.

If FIFA, UEFA and our own FA do practically nothing about it, what message does that send to those who shout these chants or give nazi salutes, etc? Fines of a few thousand pounds do nothing. Huge fines, ejection from cup competitions and criminal convictions carrying meaningful sentences are the only way this will change.
@shanewright27725 жыл бұрын
FIFA are making enormous money out of their endorsement of the systemically racist Qatari regime at the next World Cup. Don't expect anything from them except sanctimonious claptrap and mindless meddling.

The problem is, now that people know what will happen. If a team is losing, their fans could use racist chants to get the game abandoned and so replayed. Or these far east betting syndicates could also use it to their advantage. Some other reaction to the problem needs to be introduced.

The 7 minute video circulating online shows the Yeovil fans in a very poor light, where it is clear at least 2 bottles were thrown and the players were subjected to hostile verbal abuse but it isn't clear exactly what was said and there's no sign of the stones you say were thrown or monkey chants that the Haringey manager referenced in interviews. As such, the FA had little option but to replay the fixture rather than pursue an immediate stronger punishment, while a further investigation should root out the more damning allegations aimed at the Yeovil fans. If the evidence was more clear cut I wouldn't have been surprised if the FA had wanted to send out a message via Yeovil's expulsion from the competition. The 2 men arrested should not be allowed near a football stadium again. Allegations of racism aside, the bottle throwing and vitriol aimed at the players no more than a couple of feet away from the edge of the pitch, would have stopped me from wanting to continue playing if I was in their shoes, let alone being subjected to racist abuse. Both mangers and teams should be commended for how they responded (and the referee who rather bravely walked up to the lout causing a lot of the issues and requested the stewards removed him immediately.)

Hello Luke and a very interesting video about a serious issue within the so called beautiful game we call association football or soccer or football or footy anyway as much as I love this sport that I’ve followed for so many years since I was in my early teens as I’m now 58 years old it seem there’s always been this poisonous venomous toxic and sceptic element that’s reared it’s ugly head in this exciting sport which I’m well aware that can bring out a lot of emotions but then again human emotions can get out of hand because of people a minority have serious personality disorders as to why they can’t control themselves and need to see a doctor too sort their heads out like a check up from the neck up and they need to go on an educational course to learn about mixed national culture diversity if that makes sense but first they have to know themselves and check themselves before they wreck themselves so that’s it for so take care and cheerio

I feel like the reason we’re seeing more cases recently is because more attention has been brought to the issue, therefore people are more comfortable reporting racial abuse. Either that, or a small number of awful people are resisting against the anti racist movement. In a way I think the best way to stop it could be not to give any media attention to those causing the problem as that is what they want.

I don't think racism is an opinion. An opinion is something formed in the light of consideration of facts. I don't think you can dignify racism in those terms. BTW, nice use of the word nonce in your previous comment.

Racism has been a problem in football for years - only now people are getting serious about calling it out. There's an extract from former Championship Manager Wonderkid Cherno Samba's book, where his fans were giving an opposition player racist abuse, but then turned to him and was like "not you, you're one of us". When none of the governing bodies are taking a serious stance on this, little progress can be made. Name those responsible and ban them from stadiums - as the vast majority of good, proper Non-League fans we too need to be prepared to confront racist behaviour from within our own clubs if such behaviour occurs.

The problem might not be all fans at yeovil but what other way can racism be eradicated at football matches than hardline punishments. If my fellow brighton fans were doing this and we were kicked out of the fa cup for example i would be unhappy but in the way of kicking it out the game it needs to be done.

Fact of the mater is, even if you kick "racism" out of football, next you''ll get sectarian abuse at games, Muslim/Catholic/Guardian-reading players getting abused and if you kick that out , it'll be gingers, gays and players who wear lime green boots. Because like it or not, human beings are hardwired to tribalize. That's why we like football in the first place. I belong in the blue tribe and those Italian murdering bastards form across the park belong in the red. It's all tribes. Nowadays, even though (or because) there is no evolutionary advantage left in doing so it comes out in shit like racism. If not as racism, it'll come out some way. The big question is how much of football that you love and need for your own personal affirmation are you prepared to give up in order to chase the snipe that is a game free of racism before you say "Nope, I love football more than I do the idea of a perfect social model". I'll wager for you, me and 99.9% of football supporters, it will be not very much at all. How sincere is football as an industry about tackling it? Not very and even their nugatory commitment won't last long - once games start being called, once matchday revenues shrink because of lock outs, when the point is reached where FIFA's hypocrisy in handing the world cup to barbaric and racist regimes like Qatar in order to make money hand over fist while the grassroots sacrifices their principal form of income becomes intolerable - once we get to this point, football will realize that ultimately, eliminating racism is a price they aren't prepared to pay beyond the current lip service they give it. So, no, you won't even get remotely close to eliminating racism from football unless you are so willing to change the culture and business model of the game that you may kill it in trying. And no one will do that.

I'll add also that my team (Wolves) go to Bratislava on Thursday. The game is "behind closed doors" due to Racism and Nazi salutes in a prior game. The club (Bratislava) have found the loophole which allows children under the age of 14 to attend. Therefore over 22000 tickets have been sold. Highly suspect that adults will get in with some of those regardless. If UEFA set the proper example the doors would be fully closed to send out the clear message. Thousands of children will now attend thinking racism is acceptable. Examples need to be strongly set, that's one half of the issue that needs and can be solved within football.

See I think they should have been thrown out for walking off simply because it causes a bad precedent. If you are losing players could claim they heard racists about being thrown at them or their teammates (And lets be honest here Footballers are hardly the most ethical of people if its the difference between a win and a loss). There is also the possibility that a teams own fans could find a way of racially abusing their own team and pin it on the other team's fans if they are losing the match. You would hope neither would happen but I'm far from sure its something that players and/or fans wouldn't consider in a big match It should only be the ref who can decide when to take the players off not the players. And we really need some procedure put in place as we saw in the international game for the ref to follow

Daniel, while we are all part of the human race, hatred based on someone's skin colour or where they were born does exist. The word used to describe this in modern language is racism. Unless you have a more accurate term?
@IlijaStajic5 жыл бұрын
We are a human species. Race exists, ask a forensic scientist. Being oblivious to race is the most racist thing. The problem is that since the latter half of the 20th century, humans (especially in the west/first world) are not coping with the surging progression of technology, implementation of neo-liberalism, multiculturalism and corporate/cultural globalism. This conditioning goes against the very grain that civilisation has been constructed gradually upon for the last few millennia. It's a total shambles and this is the result. Fuck globalism.

Sadly no! It stems from the fact that we are dealing with it in a very wrong way! We treat racism as a systematic thing and reality is that it is not now or ever been! When we start admitting that racism is a personal choice and not cultivated through system then we may have a chance to live past it! When we admit that racism is a personal choice passed on from both sides then we can deal with the individuals responsible for those thought patterns! Dealing with individuals with a systematic approach has routinely failed for 3000 years and will continue to do so until we re-evaluate why? Everytime an organization tries to do it or a lobby group it creates more hate (kickback) to what could alleviate the problem as nobody likes being told or forced into something they don't yet believe! 👈 this one fact is why until we start dealing with racism on a one to one basis and lobby groups step and let time and understanding take their toll the problem will fade away finally! Great vid brother!

Lippyfry Bender the international rivalries are not racism. England v Scotland have competed as rivals as far back as history goes. England will always have tensions with Germany cus we faced them in the World Cup final. Germany v holand is poor political and based on war. Elements of nationalism are present and do play a big part in all three rivalries but I think it is a trait we can rise above.
