*** Regarding the big outer bolt 4:50 *** Where the head of the bolt meets the rack. The rack has been staked. Meaning the rack has been crushed or squeezed to lock the bolt in. FIRST remove the rack off the car, remove fluid and clean the outside. SECOND very carefully with a dremel grind away the stake that's holding the bolt down. Look for the difference in color. That will tell you once you've grinded past the rack and onto the bolt. You might grind a small amount of the bolt but it's ok because it wont touch the threads. You must do this otherwise you will destroy the extremely fine threads attempting to remove it. THIRD put the rack on a strong vice that's mounted to something very sturdy. We had the vice biting the head of the bolt and a huge crescent wrench on the aluminum part where rack bushing goes. FOURTH once you remove the bolt you will have to carefully dremel and clean up where the stake was so there isnt any metal on the inside of the rack that might carve into bolt. FIFTH when you're ready to install just put some blue loctite halfway up the bolt and carefully let the bolt slide down the metal shaft. Hand tighten with very little force until you cant anymore. Then finish off with a big crescent wrench. You can double check it once it's on the car. Good luck yall! 🤙

Haha as soon as I saw the stripped threads on that retaining nut I was like oh dear he didnt remove the stake.
@matthewstorm51882 жыл бұрын
According to factory specs, the end cap needs to be tightened to 43-54ft-lb. The socket size is 1 5/8 inches. They also recommend re-staking it. But honestly, I prefer the suggestion of Loctite given here.

I dont think you mentioned it, but I think the FSM says to drill out the staked portion of the cylinder end cover, so you won’t get the threads all messed up on the cover. Great vid man!

@_wraith29625 жыл бұрын
You Usually don't need to replace the Teflon rings on the pinion or on the shafts they usually don't go bad but replace them if there cut also use like a 90 degree pick to put in the Teflon rings. ALSO NEXT TIME Put the inner seal on the shaft it will be so much easier

How tight where the teflon seals once they where in position? I did notice they looked alittle stretched and that made it really tricky to slide it back into the rack case. Also now that its finished it seems really tight even though the rack has nothing connected...it is yet the be powered up (electric pump driven) so im guessing it needs some oiling for it to free up. Did you have the same problem?

I know this is late, but for other people. the teflon seals are tight and stiff, and stretch out and stay stretched when you put them on. They sell tools that are tubes that clamp on and retighten them, but you can wrap a piece of cardboard around them and toghten then up with multiple tie-wraps. a day later and all tight again. for The one in the middle of the rack, you simply insert it in the tub, that will serve as a tool. Pull it out the next day and it`ll be tight again.
@matthewstorm51882 жыл бұрын
@ Sebastien Tremblay I should also mention that, according to the factory service manual, these teflon rings should be warmed to 104F with a heat gun or hair dryer to soften them before installing. Not sure whether they will snap back better if you do this.

I have the manual for my car (a dastun 280zx with a very similar rack) and you are supposed to wrap the teth of the rack with some plastic sheet to prevent the teeth from gouging the seals as you insert the rack back. Next time, I guess!
