@southernlady50857 күн бұрын
At first, it seems as if Floki is behaving like a rejected girlfriend. He could never understand Ragnar’s thirst for greater knowledge which Æthelstan fulfilled as an educated religious (monk) of his day. And, in turn, Ragnar fulfilled Æthelstan’s need for a purpose in life. Æthelstan seemed to get as much out of the relationship as did Ragnar. He loved teaching Ragnar about the greater world beyond Ragnar’s small community in Norway. Ragnar and AEthelstan were kindred brothers in that both loved learning from each other’s cultures and actively sought knowledge beyond what their isolated communities could provide. On the other hand, Floki wanted to maintain the status quo, the village’s old ways and gods, as that gave him stability and fulfillment. He couldn’t see beyond the village of Kattegat and the ways of his youth, although he is portrayed as a master craftsman. But even that was a necessary and accepted skill of village life as the goods pilfered from other towns were necessary to the village’s survival outside of the growing season. I don’t think throwing the silver bracelet into the waters was so much a betrayal of Ragnar as it was maintaining his Christian vow of poverty in Æthelstan’s mind, something Floki couldn’t understand. Æthelstan struggled with the religious ideology that he would follow. Throwing that bracelet into the water was symbolic of that internal struggle he had within himself between accepting paganism and rejecting Christianity or adhering to the precepts of Christianity as a vowed religious. It is a foreshadowing of the way he would die at Floki’s hands and the clash of cultures and belief systems Æthelstan represented. If anything, Ragnar saw his beloved friend as one who gave him knowledge and respect; Floki saw him as a danger, one whose presence meant the destruction of the old ways and gods, and traditions that couldn’t keep pace with a changing world. Floki saw in Æthelstan everything he feared, everything he hated, all that threatened the Viking way of life and their deeply held beliefs about their way of life and the life to come. He saw Christianity as a weakness, and those who followed it, as being inadequate to the Viking spirit. So Floki’s attitude in this clip represents so much more than mere pettiness. It is a clash of warring cultures just under the surface of daily life. This is why Floki acts the way that he does as he desires that which he has always known and loved.
