In part 2 of converting the teak veneered mid century modern bookcase cabinet, I make and fit a leg assembly for the base of the unit, make and fit the cabinet doors using some euro hinges, remove water stains using oxalic acid, re finish the parts that needed tidying up, and cut the shelves to length - and that's it done!

Keith, you truly are a modern day Rag-n-Bone man! These are my favorite type of projects. I can't leave without telling you that you really need to wear your safety glasses more. You only get two eyes my friend and in one moment you loose them both. It's really not worth the risk. I'll stop preaching now. :) Keep up the good work Keith!

Hi Keith the trouble you’ve had with the hinges is it looks like you have the cup part of the hinge too far in from the edge of the door, we usually have about 5mm from the edge of the door to the outside of the cup so its around 22mm from the outside of the door too the centre point of your hinge bit on an 18mm carcass If in doubt just have a look at a standard kitchen door as they are all on the universal 32mm system that these hinges are made to work on Hope that helps in the future and keep up the great work 👍🏻

Hi Keith nice project , for my attic door I fitted EASY MOUNT HINGES 90° from screwfix that didn't need the big hole drilled in the door very easy to fit and work great ,G.

Another vote for getting a hinge jig if you're going to be using those hinges again. Mine came from screwfix or toolstation and really didn't cost much. I've used that style of hinge a few times. The first time I used them and didn't have the jig, I copied the measurements for mounting them from one of the cupboards in my kitchen that have the same style hinge

Another great video, please don't be so hard on yourself...the darker lower section works (if matching is not possible) as I was taught that the darker tone will "anchor the design"... as for the euro hinges I've fitted quite a few and the adjustments help compensate for doing the job on my own (and not being as good at as you!). Our dear friend Peter Millard had the jig on his "gifts for makers" list and using a drill press with a depth template works for me. The hinge screws from Toolstation/Screwfix help too😃

Really nice peice, personally I'm with you, I wouldn't fit handles to it. I would fit some fit some spring loaded magnetic poppers and have tee doors push to open and they are relatively inexpensive aswell.

@1959ticktock

I guess those hinges were a learning process. They don't need any catches to hold them closed. But, apart from that, those sort of hinges are best left to standard chipboard furniture, built to certain modern standard dimensions. Most of what make/alter cannot easily conform to this without much expensive time and effort. Simple brass hinges would've been much more time effective, and looked good. But they'd've needed catches. Great video as always Kieth. Thanks.

Nice video, just for future reference when using those hinges, your offset needs to be much less than what it was, 5mm from the edge of the door to the edge of the cup hole would have been fine, but it looked 8-10mm-ish to me. Keep up the good work, I enjoy the channel!

@drewbyscoobywho
@drewbyscoobywho 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith, on the issues you had with the cup hinges, it may be that your doors were too thick. I think 22mm is the max for standard style hinges. You can buy hinges from Blum that are called "profile door hinges" which have a different swing to push the door away slightly from the carcass as it opens, and can accommodate doors from 16 to 32mm. As someone has also commented, it looks like you may have drilled the cup a little too far from the edge of the door as well. As most of these euro hinges are fairly standard, if you need fitting instructions, you can download the PDF from the Blum website. It gives all the information on where to position the hinge depending on carcass material thickness, door thickness, minimum gap required for clearance etc. It's a great free source of information. Keep up the great vids, and best of luck with the business!

Thanks so much Andrew, wise words and yes I think you are right, my doors would have been about 22mm possibly a fraction more so that was probably where I went wrong! 👍
