I've got a tip for you regarding using screws on glue-ups like this. If you don't want to have the screws visible in the finished project, pull them out once glue is set, drill hole larger to accept dowels, insert dowels, flush cut them once glue is dry, and sand. Looks great once all sanded nicely and varnished.
@RupelWood6 жыл бұрын
Nice project Keith. I personally would have removed the screws once the glue had set to replace them with dowels. Wish you a happy new year with hopefully a lot of new projects to come.

I've had the same exact problem when using the biscuit joiner on oak face frames. After a few stressful and unsuccessful glue ups, I stack equal height wood behind the face frame when biscuit joining to ensure I'm cutting a 90 degree angle.

Nice job! I recently completed a commission for a 6ft x 5ft x 3ft dollhouse and can appreciate your struggles of building a large project in a small space. I work out of a one car garage but the tools take up most of the space. I had to paint the project in my living room. Again great job on the desk and on taking on a large project like that!

Good job as always, Just a thought , as you are limited on space and your garden is a workshop extension, have you thought of one of those "POP UP" gazebo type covers.. really easy to pop up and fold down for easy storage..

I've one which isn't "pop-up", but still easy to put up like a tent. It has pegs and guy ropes which means I can leave it up on the back garden until the project is finished. We do get rain and wind in Ireland! Enjoyed the video (s) Good luck for 2018

Hola Keith,just watched your vidio of you making radio studio desks,I just might add that I have watched it a couple of time's before but I didn’t make a comment,well I thought you did a top rate job,especialy when you take into consideration that the work you were doing was not the work you have been doing all your working life,I know that the more work you do,the more confidence you will gain and become better at working with wood,I can only give you one valuable tip,and that is to always make detailed plans,obviously requires lot's of thinking,but forward planning always pays off,oh and one more tip,never be afraid to ask for advice,nothing to be ashamed of,good luck for all your future work,take care,and stay healthy.
@jodydorsett87266 жыл бұрын
In the States we call this fibrecore. In the future use Dowling. Alingn the grain of the dowel with the wood edge banding. Simple strap clamps, the kind one uses for securing loads on vehicles, can be used. The dowels will keep it all square. Otherwise, as a guy doing this for 30 years, WELL done.

Nice build , think maybe you should try using the cordless makita saw the other way, so the wider part of the base is before the cut line. So you don’t tip the saw and no longer get a angled cut. Good videos

Hi Keith nice project, I have done the same with a recording studio from start to finish. One little tip if you have any cash left over from the commission grab yourself a couple of long clamps while the sales are on, also to get the trim on the desks I used dowels and screws which I sunk and plugged. Keep up the great videos mate and keep it Norfolk Buh.

Would it be a feasible idea to build some kind of basic awning to cover fence-to-fence for more outdoor work? Either something to connect a plastic tarp to, or something a bit more rigid (perhaps a wood/metal frame with a stretched tarp over so you can just set it up, or take it down and set it against the fence when the weather is OK/to allow light to the garden)

I think the problem you were having with the biscuits is that they tend to swell up quite a bit once you get glue on them. They pretty much need to be put into place immediately. If they sit for too long with glue on them they swell up and it becomes very difficult to fit them in the slots.

to reduce tearout with a circular saw you can: 1.get a high tooth count blade 2. cut backwards 3. put tape on the wood 4. clamp a scrap board above the wood and cut through both
@daviekiwi60986 жыл бұрын
Have you consider to build a saw horse, I notice when you try cut a larger piece of wood, you have to put the work piece on the ground and cut with your straight edge. To lay the work piece on the saw horse will be much easy to manage the cut. Google will help to find some good design of saw horse.

Not easy when you don't have the right tools or the space for the job but you done well considering the limitations. Good idea with the screw eyelets but I probably would have went with a brass / gold coloured screw to match them rather than the steel coloured screws
@hackinblack71026 жыл бұрын
the trim would be a good time to use pocket-hole screws; from underneath; or countersink screws and plug the holes with softwood dowel (softer than the trim, to make it easier to get them flush without sanding the trim away) the cup washers look a bit naff compared to how lovely oak looks...especially when varnished.

Always love to see a video that shows the mistakes as well as the successes. I think there's the same learning potential in both of them. Congratulations on your first paid project and I hope it's just the first of a long series. One question, though : why not double the thickness of the MDF for a few cm at the edge, then use an ABS edge banding that will cover both layers of MDF, giving the final look of a single thick top ?

Perhaps your next project will be a kind of "roof" to the garden? 🤣 some 100mm × 100mm posts you can put in a hole in the garden and then some tarpaulin or something over it. So when you work on a project outside and if you're not sure if it's going to rain, make sure it's safe 😄 if that make sense 🤔
