Note: The Porter has neither a generator or air compressor, but that being said the UI doesn't sync up so on locos that have the generator and/or compressor they can be on but show 0% when entering the UI. The generator is only on the Climax and the Heisler and is a steam turbine used to generate electricity for those locos electric lights. The compressor uses steam power to fill the air reservoir for the air brakes on some of the locomotives. No air means no brakes. Please stop commenting that the generator and/or compressor make the locomotive more powerful. Thank you! :D

From what I seen in the game the generator and compressor helps make it a tiny bit more powerful with the steam engine trains like the eureka

@@IcarusViking from what i've seen, somehow the generator makes the Eureka a few times more powerful, to the point that it can't even do top speed without cars, without the generator maybe this is an alternate reality where that engine was electrified waaay before lmao

I just completed a line to the smelter yesterday evening. I came through the pass from the sawmill and went down the ridge with a constant 3% grade with only one stretch of steel trestle to get me across from one ridge to the next. Now I will start surveying to the mines. A topographic map would be very useful for this.

Im curious how much freedom is there really? Like when ark originally released it didnt take long to figure out how few choices there were for large base sites due to terrain preventing structures.

That sort of steep grade is what engines like the Climax and Heisler are designed to deal with. They're not all that fast, but they can pull heavy loads up steep grades.

the only thing that costs money when laying track is cutting trees. So you may want to build tracks with less steep grades. I limit it to 4 %> I can haul 18 cars to the iron mine loaded with lumber with the smallest engine no problem. It will most likely handle 20 cars. Loading and unloading that long of a train is kind of a pain. you cant see the last cars well to line up on loading docks. Needs a last car view with control.

I can only imagine the heartache and pain that you must have gone through to get to this point.. Man, I really, really want to enjoy playing this game but Damn! It is buggy as hell! Great job for hanging there.. I think I'm done with it for now.. The re-rail is such a mess, the inaccurate refilling from the water tank, in and out, in and out of your train constantly.. Just serious work.. not much fun.

From what I've learned... If it takes 2 loaded wagons up the hill, but then struggles with one... The wagon's handbrake is on... I always forget to check them...

Porter 2 is indeed “weaker” because it is in itself heavier then Betsy, but has te same power output.

That gradient you might want to smoothen out a bit.. from what I can tell that's at least a 5% grade.. Btw i wonder if the devs will add the D&RGW K-28 and K-36 classes..

the steep part is 7,6% I build that today and run the heisler up there and that struggled with 4 log beams and 4 empty hoppers

for the steep hill you may wanna lower the top of the track as low as you can to add a very shallow incline over that first otherwise flat 200m, that'll take some of the trouble off and give you an easier assent over all

Keep with it, I am loving this game. You always do a good job on your videos. Track laying seems to be something that people have trouble with. Smooth curves and grades are really helpful for the larger locomotives. If you consider doing some multiplayer I’d be in to work for your company.

Nice one Kerbo! I wonder if you could have got a bit more speed into that climb if you’d closed the reverser a bit? From my sketchy understanding of steam locomotives the reverser is a bit like a gear shift…full forward, or full reverse is like first gear and the closer to 0% is like shifting up. Maybe. I could be wrong. Taking the handbrake off helps too :)

Thanks. That's not how the reverser works on the steam traction engines I've ran but I've no experience with locomotives

@@KerboOnYT the sum total of my experience comes from Trainz:a new era…so take it with a pinch of salt. However a quick bit of internet “research” finds that the reverser, whilst selecting forward or reverse drive also adjusts the steam cutoff to the piston. So full forward (or backward) delivers full steam to the piston and drives the piston to full expansion. This gives maximum power which is good for starting (notwithstanding wheelslip), but at faster speed it is desirable to increase the number of strokes of the piston, which is achieved by cutting off steam sooner and therefore shortening the piston stroke. Excuse my paraphrasing. Probably quite different to a traction engine as you say, of which I have zero real or imaginary experience!

As someone who drives real steam locomotives, I can confirm that the reverser does act rather more like a gear stick on an automobile. High cut-off is high steam use, high-power, low speed; low cut-off is lower steam use, lower power, high speed.

I think the price is reasonable for supporting an early access game. They're planning to have about 80 locomotives so we're just getting started. There is risk of, course, that it will never be finished as with any early access game. Thanks for watching

Value is in the eyes of the coin holder, but I think that I have gotten my moneys worth already. I have paid more for other games that I saw being played by a KZbinr and didn't play much beyond the refund period on Steam. This one is challenging but oh so rewarding when you get things right. With this game right is different for each player, so many possibilities available to connect the various industries, you can set it up like a model train or like a real railroad would, build a single player paradise or create a system where dozen of trains can operate at once.

No, they do nothing. The Porter has neither of those. There's a lot of misinformation I see out there about the generator. All it does is make electricity to run electric lights on the 2 geared locos. The compressor pumps air for brakes on some of the locos. Neither have anything to do with pulling power or speed

Does the game model J-bar efficiency? If so, you might want to adjust the reverser closer to half when you get going to save fuel.

William. Glad that Im not the only one having issues throwing the logs. I lose A LOT also. The latest patch first week of 12/21. Doi you notice anything that runs better after the Patch? Im still having issues laying track. And Im talking about from logging camp to sawmill. Having lots of derails even on curves I think are ok. GRRRR FREAKIN GRRRRRRR

I've not had those issues with the track. Other than making sure it's reasonably connected and not over 30° sharp I'm not sure what could be wrong. There are some track laying tutorial videos out there, maybe those would help?

The sound of the steam locomotives sound off in this game. The chuffs should give off every revolution of the wheels. Also, I hope they add a shay and an articulated mallet. The shay is my favorite geared steam locomotive of them all, because it's the most successful. Also I hope they add the sound of the air pump engaging every time you apply, release the brakes or when your at a stand still. Just to make it more realistic.

The chuffs not sounding right is one of the first things I noticed. Also on the Porter at least the pistons aren't offset from each other to avoid stopping with both at top dead center. Maybe the real one is like that? Oh well, it's a ton of fun anyway!

I think the porter 2 is the same as 1, stat wise. The only difference is the higher wood and water capacity. Adding weight. Not 100% though

@@KerboOnYT ok. Do you have any plans on buying a Climax? There my favorite locomotive and I even got a cab ride in one on the White Mountain Central Railroad. It is just like the one in the game except it is standard gage, is dressed up more for the amusement park, and has the value gear on the outside. Sence you have worked with steam before you should know what that type of valve gear is.

My game from Steam doesn't let me put wood in the firebox nor in the cab from the wood piles, or from the cab wood into the firebox. Nothing I do works. Oh well, I did lay track to the sawmill at least. Too bad I can't run the train.

Just got the game, but the engine control UI is horrible. Whatever my crosshair is over is what I want to control, but the game is highlights the releaser when my crosshair is right over the brake handle. Needs to be fixed before it can be played more.

fun fact, the loco Thomas the tank engine was based on was built to prove that a steam loco had the torque to accelerate as fast as an electric loco, but besides being a proof of concept for that it wasn't very practical, tender was too small for significant journeys and the wheel diameter made it impractical for most yard work, so he wasn't a very useful engine after all, would have been ideal for inner city lines and perhaps even subways if they were built full gauge but in the long run where steam got adopted in those applications the extra tourque/acceleration wasn't necessary and the rest went electric like the london underground eventually did

That's not true your think of the decopod which was a much larger and crazier loco than the engine Thomas is based on which is simply a basic tank engine that wasn't very successful at what it did but there was no significant reason for it it was just a bad design
