You need to be out in the hills in driving rain for hours for a true test. These are very poor tests.

I got to test Patagonias H2NO in the hardest rain I’ve ever felt.. so loud I couldn’t hear anything but it slamming the hood. Hiked for about three hours in that. A few points it went to a normal rain for 5-10 mins but then hard windy downpour again. Not one leak and it rolled off over my pants for the most part. After that I’m pretty certain it’s legit. Blasting with a hose is stupid. For many reasons. This video is just poorly executed for actual rain gear testing. If they knew anything about how these work they’d not be doing ☝️

I love this family's garden and pond. One thing I would say about the test is that you should also test breathability, fit, and other things like pockets and storage space. This should ideally be done where a lot of people wear waterproof rain jackets i.e. climbing mountains in the Lake District, Wales, and Scotland. After intense exercise such as climbing a mountain, you will also get a good sense of how breathable the fabric it is made from is. You should really test a different range of fabrics from different manufacturers other than only Gore-Tex, Decathalon, and Patagonia's H2N0 fabric.

for just staying dry at the bus stop, I don't think breathability is worth considering. if it was for outdoor activities then yes

Manufacturers advertise as waterproof but once you've worn the coat/jacket a few times in the rain it starts seeping and letting in water. I'm going to give up buying jackets and go down the route of buying a waterproof spray and applying that to coats, jackets and shoes/boots.

Exactly! Kit needs to be maintained, but this is not explained or understood by the average purchaser. You don’t need to spend a fortune to get a jacket that will do a decent job if it is looked after.

Probably not a good test. Were you sweating? See my other comment above. There is no such thing as perfect waterproofness and also ‘breathability’. It is just manufacturer’s ‘hype’. Some are slightly better than others. Peter Storm , and Regatta make excellent budget jackets.
@ethanmoua49

Get a poncho/rain cape. Eventually every "waterproof" jacket becomes a regular jacket because its waterproof coating wears off. It's better to judt get a plastic or rubber poncho that lets in air at the bottom.

Well, which ones will keep you dry in rain that goes on for hours, and which ones are actually breathable, and which are actually well made and will last a long time? This is not a very rigorous test

I use H2NO. A Patagonia Slate Sky and Patagonia Rainshadow. Both are $200 and have a lifetime warranty. Both look great and perform way better than expected. Gore-tex is horrible for the planet, H2NO is made from recycled fishing nets recovered from the ocean. I will say, Gore-Tex now makes a version that’s PFE-free which is great. Patagonia uses it in their Tiolet rain jacket.
@speedy6997

thatPatagonia jacket is an outer shell jacket, meaning should be worn onto of another warm jacket to protect against the elements, while the inner jacket protects from cold, the outer protects from rain and wind. therefore here comfortability not really an issue because its an outer wear, as long as its large enough for everything inside, has an adjustable tigtehning hood, blocks wind out, has good water beading.

the more expensive the jacket, the different features you will start to notice, such as, higher side zip pickers (thus for hikers the waist belt does not overlap the pockets), bottom and hood adjustability, inner pocket, gore-tex material, inner mesh for breathability, hi-tech zips,
@petercollins7848
@petercollins7848 6 ай бұрын
There is no such thing as a waterproof yet ‘breathable’ jacket, it is all a compromise. You will get wet from the inside due to sweating as soon as you really exert yourself when out hiking. All the jackets on sale in shops have been tested using laboratory conditions and not real life conditions - sweating or carrying backpacks etc. Any reasonably priced jacket will suffice for most people’s use as long as they are maintained regularly by hand washing in pure soap etc and then recoated with a wash-in product such as Nikwax or a spray on product for example. The experts and real mountaineering dudes know exactly what gear works. The average hiker doesn’t need such technical and expensive kit, jackets from the Peter Storm range, or the excellent Regatta products will work adequately for most people as long as they are looked after and maintained.

@@HarryOsirian Hi, I used to work for a while in an outdoor clothing and camping business. Most of the products on sale are just overpriced ‘fashion’ brands. You are basically paying for a brand name. There are a few technical fabrics that give a bit of an advantage in the breathable stakes, but they tend to be very expensive. The average person does not need them. It is easier to just unzip a jacket etc when you get too hot, or there are features like ‘pit zips’ which can really help, but that too makes a jacket more expensive.
@HarryOsirian

I bought the Marmot Eco Precip jacket last year and it has the pit zips and is fully windproof and waterproof as well as being packable, light and breathable. Now..why am.i watching videos comparing jackets? Because the jacket has this butt ugly color combination of mustard and red. *sigh*..it was on sale and half off...Ok, so I went to Iceland and documented my trip. Videos and photos galore. I saw myself looking like a cross between Ronald Mcdonald and Penny wise wearing that hideous jacket 🤣😇..Am looking up Regattas as I type.

@@HarryOsirian Go for it Harry! Just remember that all jackets need reproofing after a while with either a wash-in product (always check the jacket’s instructions) or a spray on proofer. Do not use any sort of normal detergents, but only pure soap products like Nikwax, Grangers or similar to clean the jacket, then reproof with products from the above. Don’t forget waterproof trousers too. Essential if there is the possibility of bad weather. Peter Storm do excellent ones at very low prices.

Regatta clothing is usually excellent. So there may have been a fault in the jacket you bought. Where did it leak? If you know you could take it back for inspection. I have many jackets in various price brackets and quite honestly there is no difference between them. I used to work in the outdoor industry and I know that mostly you are paying for a name or a particular quality. But we are not climbing the Eiger are we? We are just going hiking etc, so a cheaper or moderately priced item will do.

Regatta produce excellent products. Just as long as you maintain them they will work as well as more expensive names. The more expensive ones charge more because they spend on advertising and promotion which you have to pay back in the price. So essentially you are buying their advertising for them!
