Just realized you didn't even talk about the lyrics, LOL. The song is written about a wizard who convinced a bunch of people that he could fly and take them to a star, if only they build him a tower from where to take off. The song is written from the perspective of one of the followers/slaves (the whips and chains indicate they were enslaved, but at the same time they believed in what he said). When the tower was finished and the wizard climbed on top of it, instead of taking off and flying he fell to the ground and died, much to the shock/amazement of his followers. Now freed, the narrator is trying to come to terms with what has happened and what to do with his life now (this is elaborated further in the follow-up A Light in the Black). It's an allegory that you shouldn't waste your life helping self-denoted leaders to achieve impossible goals born out of hopeless delusions of grandeur; the most obvious example being religious cult leaders (of whom there were many in the 1970s), but it can be applied to other leaders or cult figures likewise.

@@zanatural Don't know about all that, just that when I was in a band in the seventies, Blackmore was an out-front sound presence in Deep Purple. Guitarist Richie Blackmore came from Deep purple. Deep purple did a tour with ELF opening. Blackmore decided to make a solo album with Dio on vocals. He later just turned the band in Rainbow. Dio would leave rainbow later for creative differences. which later turned out to be great timing because Black Sabbath just fired Ozzy. Deal would make two studio and one live album with Black Sabbath then start his solo band Dio. He returned to Black Sabbath twice. The second time they renamed the group Heaven and Hell after the first album they made. There he would stay until his passing from cancer in 2010. RIP DIO

So, my friend, you are a big Deep Purple fan, so you need to understand the connection. "Elf" is the band that Dio was singing in while they were opening for Purple. When Richie Blackmore decided to leave Purple, he basically stole everyone from Elf and created Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. The two songs that you reacted to are on "Rising" (their second album) where he only kept Dio and replaced everyone else that used to be in Elf.

Rainbow is Ritchie Blackmore's (From Deep Purple) solo project from when he left in 1975. He picked up Dio from his band Elf which was the regular opening act of Deep Purple. Stargazer (released in 1976) is actually written as a punch at Led Zeppelin's Kashmir (from 1975) trying to one-up them. Really recommend Gates of Babylon from Rainbow, it is another awesome majestic song.

Having exposed my Norwegian heritage, there is one explosive video you would have great interest in watching. Our most revered and famous classical composer was Edvard Grieg. In spite of his tiny stature - he was just 5 feet tall - he was famous at his time (1880s) for being a heavy, heavy rocker on the piano. This has prompted heavy rock groups of the 70s and 80s to cover his melodies. In 1995 Ritchie Blackmore and Rainbow did "In the hall of the mountain king". You should check it out. Its a live video.

Ronnie James Dio sang in Elf; Rainbow; Black Sabbath; Dio and Heaven and Hell, which was a group made of him him and the members of the Mk. II era of Black Sabbath (Dio, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Vinnie Appice). They were named after the first album Black Sabbath recorded with this line up. And , like somebody already said, Rainbow was Ritchie Blackmore's group, not Dio's. In fact, Rainbow is also called Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Dio probably comes from "Deo" the Latin word for "God"

FWIW, according to himself he adopted the name Dio in highschool after a mafia gangster named Johnny Dio, because he thought it was cool (his real name is Padavona). That was about the same time this highschool band started recording. Record company liked the name so he kept it. I think it first appeared on a record in 1960. He did a number of singles and an LP with that band under different band names. Mostly doo-wop, rockabilly and rock'n'roll songs. They later reformed and named themselves Electric Elves, which changed to Elves and later Elf, playing more blues rock and hard rock. As Elf, they were discovered by Roger Glover and Ian Paice of Deep Purple, and became Deep Purple's regular opening act. They recorded three LPs, if I'm not mistaken. When Blackmore decided to leave Deep Purple, he basically took over Elf and became their lead guitarist. They named the band Rainbow. In subsequent years, Blackmore dismissed all former Elf members except for Dio. Dio left/was dismissed (depending on who you ask) in 1978, and shortly thereafter joined Black Sabbath. As others have noted, you should definitely check out some live performances. Rainbow Live in Munich 1977 has some legendary performances, for example Mistreated, Kill the King, or Catch the Rainbow, to mention just a few. For his own band, Don't talk to Strangers live at the Philly has already been recommended; both versions 1984 or 1986 are good. (This is just for starters, there's much more worthy of checking out in later years, up until 2007-2009, shortly before he passed.)

Rainbow In the mid-1970s Dio's vocals caught the ear of Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who was planning on leaving them due to creative differences over the band's new direction. Blackmore invited Dio along with Gary Driscoll to record two songs in Tampa, Florida on December 12, 1974. Blackmore stated in 1983, "I left Deep Purple because I'd met up with Ronnie Dio, and he was so easy to work with. He was originally just going to do one track of a solo LP, but we ended up doing the whole LP in three weeks, which I was very excited about."[20] Being satisfied with the results, Blackmore decided to recruit more of Elf's musicians and form his own band, initially known as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. They released the self-titled debut album Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in early 1975. After that, Dio recorded two more studio albums (Rising and Long Live Rock 'n' Roll), the live album On Stage, and two archival live albums (Live in Munich 1977 and Live in Germany 1976) with Blackmore. During his tenure with Rainbow, Dio and Blackmore were the only constant members. Dio is credited on those albums for all lyrical authorship as well as collaboration with Blackmore on musical arrangement. Dio and Blackmore split, with Blackmore taking the band in a more commercial direction, with Graham Bonnet on vocals and the album Down to Earth.

Dio joined Sabbath after it was already established with Ozzy.. some fans hated the change in vocal styles and instrumentation that changed to match Dios vocals, but over time his work in Sabbath has become legendary. It went from more bluesy rock to something more operatic. He was only there for a short while before leaving and forming his own band. In interviews Ronnie seems like a cool, down to earth guy.. when he talks about musicians he had a falling out with..like Ritchie Blackmore / Rainbow.. he does not hold back. He comes across as a guy who loved and respected his fans, but was a bit "difficult" to work with professionally.

If you love theatrical then you will most likely enjoy concept albums. Dio has a concept album 'Magica' which is worth a listen-through. Each song is part of an overall story (which, coincidentally, Dio narrates the actual story at the end of the album so you can piece together the songs and how they fir the overall narrative.) Definitely worth a listen while you are on your Dio journey.

I would bet that Ritchie would have still written the music but I wonder what they would sound like with different lyrics and a different singer. Although Dio was great, there are other great singers as well. Without Ritchie's music the songs wouldn't exist either.

May be its sad to reveal, but several of the famous heavy rock groups in the 70s and 80s owe their existence to Ritchie Blackmore and Deep Purple. As the first highly technically accomplished rock guitarist to emerge from the late 60s and shape the heavy rock genre, leading into punk and heavy metal, Blackmore literally gave birth to other world famous artist, now being recognized as if they should have created their own career. Two to be mentioned are David Coverdale, creator and lead singer of Whitesnake, who - was it not for him being picked as new vocalist in Deep Purple in 1973 - still might have been singing in an amateur band in Redcar, U.K. The other is Ronnie James Dio, who went on to have a fantastic career after being extracted from obscurity in his group ELF in 1975. Blackmore hired the entire ELF, and after a while simply got rid of everybody except Dio. Surprisingly, Ronnie James was exceptionally hostile to Blackmore in a later interview, because of Blackmore's dominance in Rainbow - but that's what you would be, when you have been the pioneer super-guitarist to create what is today known as heavy rock - and the Rainbow was a concept long before Dio's entrance on the scene - see Deep Purple's concert at California Jam 1974. Rainbow, by the way, is the loudest band I have ever heard. I saw them in Norway in 1977, in a sports hall. Sitting in the amfi across the field, I could NOT recognize "Mistreated" other than by the words - the sound of the music was like sitting inside a liquid fuel rocket.

Surprisingly hostile? For an idea of how Blackmore's "dominance" in Rainbow went down, please refer to the interview section at www.rainbowfanclan. com. And I'm not even talking about Dio's interviews (who was comparatively polite) but other band members. The man was simply impossible to work with.

Well, if Dio didn't WANT to be a world class superstar through Ritchie Blackmore, making tons of money and become an icon in rock history, he didn't actually HAVE to. He could just have said "no" and continued to be the dominant force in ELF. There are a lot of artists who could have been world class superstars if they had been given a chance. Ronnie James Dio was, and I guess he grabbed it with both hands. I would have liked to see what he had become, if he didn't.

@@ozziesollien7160 Making tons of money, in Rainbow? Blackmore barely paid his musicians at all. Both Dio and Bonnet had to go through lengthy lawsuits before he finally paid them the money he owed. Sorry to burst the bubble; it's well documented that the man was a genius as a guitarist, and he was also an awful person to work with. For other nice stories, you can always ask Deep Purple. Like this: www.thehighwaystar. com/specials/CHoHW/story. html If dozens of people say the same thing, chances are there is some truth to it. Maybe you think being a genius gives somebody the right to treat everyone around them like a piece of shit. I disagree.

No money in Rainbow. In Dio. No bubble to be burst about Ritchie Blackmore - I've seen him since 1969 and read all I need to know about him. I just found it pointless of Ronnie James to criticize somebody, without whom you would still be just another singer. I cannot see how he would have made it to stardom and fame without Ritchie Blackmore. I followed music extremely closely in those days, and it was not a myriad of groups - and Ronnie came from a group I, for one, had never heard about. Can anybody tell me if any of the other members of ELF became world famous? If so, it escaped me. Now, as Clint Eastwood would have said: Enough of this.

@@ozziesollien7160 There weren't a myriad of groups, in the early 70s? Not sure if serious. If you've never heard about them, it's your problem. Glover and Paice discovered them at a studio audition, not Blackmore. They were Purple's support group on their 1974/75 world tours. Then Blackmore became Elf's guitarist and renamed them Rainbow. Thereafter he fired everyone else but Dio before they could become world famous. As for the "what would have been", pure speculation. Nobody knows.

You should check out the symphonic metal band Nightwish. Start with Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013. You will NOT be disappointed. The lead vocalist in my opinion is the best female singer in the world/universe! The band is absolutely unbelievable. I grew up listing to this Rainbow album back many years ago.
