Is the 2021 Porsche 718 GTS a BETTER sports car than a C8 Corvette?

The 718 GTS is offered two different ways from Porsche. There is the hard top verison called the Cayman or the soft top convertible known as the Boxster. Under the engine cover of the 718 GTS is a 4.0L flat-6 that produces 394HP @ almost 8k RPM and is mated to a 7-speed PDK gearbox. On the outside you will find unique bodywork to the GTS, 20in wheels, massive Brembo brakes and sport exhaust. On the inside you will be greeted by a leather/Alcantara interior, analog gauges and 7in infotainment system. Is the 2021 Porsche 718 GTS a BETTER sports car than a C8 Corvette?

At 67 I'm looking for my last sports car. I've had everything from my first car a Datsun 510 to a big block custom Pantera, to a c6Z06 with some Mustangs and 350z's along the way. I purchased a 2021 Cayman GTS, after previously owning a 2019 Cayman (base), a few months ago because I wanted the naturally aspirated 6. However, I just couldn’t tolerate the obnoxious ticking sound (diesel-like) of the engine when idling and accelerating up through the gears. I sold it to a Porsche dealer in NH last week with a few hundred miles on it. I hated giving it up because I love everything else about the GTS, but we’re now spec’ing a Cayman S. The sound may be normal to this engine (injectors), but the sound of the flat 4 doesn’t bother me as much now compared to the 6...I never thought I would ever utter those words. A number of other recent owners have talked about this on several Porsche forums over the past year, as they were concerned about the sound and thought it was due to an engine problem that was in the news at the time only to be told that it was normal. Unfortunately, I didn’t come across the posts until after taking delivery of the car. If you do get a chance to hear this sound in car review videos, which is difficult because when the sound of the car is featured the reviewer doesn’t give you a chance to hear it due to revving it, just know the ticking sound is more prominent in person. If others can live with the sound, more power to you.

@@adeebh1238 always had a sport car in the garage. Many vettes, Nissan z, Camaro and so on. All garage queens. Too many great daily drivers out there. Macan GTS is one example. Audi, bmw, and Benz have several. C8 is a great car but garage queens are no longer my thing. I’ll spend another chunk of change but one I’ll enjoy everyday. No more two seaters for me

@@itguru2037 I’m thinking with all the high performance sedans and even SUVs there’s a sweet spot. Bmw m440i Gran Coupe with 382 hp (on order). Porsche Macan s or GTS. Mercedes and Audi make several sedans and small SUVs with a good compromise between sports car and daily driver

I would take this over a C8 every day of the week. It is more balanced and more refined. Sitting in one you feel like James Dean. It's just a great car. You can also blend in when you are out if you choose to.

I’ve got the older turbo 718 Boxster GTS and a C8. Both are great cars. For track use I prefer the C8. I choose the Porsche for driving on the local country roads. If I had to keep one it would be the C8.

I was lucky enough to drive a 911 cabriolet w/6-speed manual. I can't think of any car more PERFECT than a Porsche other than the high price tag and the cost of ownership. If you can afford one it is worth EVERY PENNY. My dream car is the Cayman GTS. I was more amazed with the comfort, build quality and ride of the 911 than with it's performance!

I've driven one as well and I thought that it was too much car for the street. I found it frustrating driving such a capable car in such a mundane manner. Even in spirited driving, one can only come close to approaching the car's capabilities on a track.

@@darrell9616 The 911 that I drove was a 2010 base model cabriolet. It had 340(?) HP and 0-60 of about 4.9(?) seconds. Not really a "track car" but more of an exquisite GT for enjoying the ride while traveling around. Especially in sunny weather. I was very, very surprised that it was so tame in traffic (NYC suburb) but when I had a chance I opened it up on the parkway. Yowza!

Anyone who's drive both these cars knows they're not the same thing, or going for the same experience. They are both 2-seat sports cars, but that's where the similarities end. The only reason anyone would cross shop the two is if they had no idea what driving experience they wanted, or were simply joyriding.

I have owned two Boxster S's and now have a 2021 C8.... I left Porsche for the C8 and it is superior to the Boxster IMHO. I sold my 2018 Macan Sport when I got the C8 and will probably come back to Porsche at some point, but not back to the Boxster.... after having a C8. It would be a step down... again in my opinion.

Great analysis as usual. I love Porsche but I went with the C8 Z51 package and never looked back. Amazing styling, out of this world public attention. The C8 has great performance and finally gets a proper interior. I go to car shows and get 4 times more attention with the C8 than the Porsche cars do. I would have never thought that could happen in a million years. To make matters more complicated, the amazing Z06 has been unveiled. C8, best bang for your buck sports car in the world period...

The C8 is a great car, and a great bargain compared to this Porsche. But most people who have the means to buy one of these would probably choose the 718 GTS.

I prefer safety--comfort and reliability and I can afford one of these but I chose to get an AWD Stinger. I was able to top speed the stinger this weekend along with a buddy who had a 2021 Charger SRT. My car hit 170 and then the governor kicked in and I kept it at about 160 to 165 for about 4 miles.My buddy kept his charger pinned but it basically sat at 162 to 165 and was about 4 to 5 car lengths behind me(freind said it just went in top gear and loafed along at around 165--no governor). We were both right around 6k rpms--Id would say about 5.8 for me at around 165--my car was twitchy because if I punched the 2 turbos would give it a kick instead of smoothe power)it it would ping 167 decently quick.The 3,3 alone was good for low 160s--but needed the turbos.Gas mileage was 13.9mpg 154 mph average over 5 miles--charger was 10mpg same speed. I like both these cars but I need some balance--but both these cars are almost triple what i paid for my stinger and in real world driving all I would get was some more top end.It was also very windy and the stability of a heavier sedan made me more confident then if I was in a smaller car like one of these.I took my SCCA test in the late 90s early 2000s in a 911 GT semi cup car and spun out at Road Atl--I am sure this porsche is better but I probably will not ever drive a car again unless it as AWD.I was also in comfort mode when I did this.The stinger is a benchmark for performance and cost--I paid 36k out the door last year at the height of covid.AWD Stingers are now 50k plus--carvana offered me 40k last week for mine.I also have geomet cross drilled slotted vented rotors track lvl 2) on all 4s along with the brembos and a str8 pipe quad exhaust with no mufflers welded to the underneath of the cars chasis like they do on race cars--so for a little under 40k I got about 95% of the performance of these 2 and could probably take the porsche off the line.

I doubt it. I’ve had a GT4 and a C7 Z06 and other Porsches before those. If you want a true sports car you get a Porsche GT car, Carrera S or better or you get a Corvette GS or Z06. Anything else is just “hairdresser’s” car.

I have the same Gentian Boxster except it’s a manual. Totally unreal driving experience, especially when you wind it all the way out in 2nd gear and you’re flying at 140kmh!!! Yet it’s an extremely compliant and comfortable daily driver and long distance cruiser. This is likely one of the last big Naturally aspirated ICE engines in manual that we’ll see. Because of that I’m keeping this beast for a long time!

I do have a '14 Boxster and a '21 C8 HTC. I like them both. The Porsche is easier to drive probably due to its smaller size, but I think most people in parking lots and gas stations don't know what it is (other than "some sports car"), whereas the Vette always gets compliments and thumbs-ups.

It’s great but can’t get one now. Greedy ADM premiums added on by dealers to make them even more unattainable. You can still order a base 4 cylinder turbo if you’re fortunate. The base starts at $62k. This flat six GTS starts at $90,000 before options, tax and fees. It’s hard to keep it below $100k The Best Buy is the S trim which starts at 72k and has more power and drives even better then the base and close to the GTS.

Kind of crazy how the 3.0L derived 4.0 in the boxster sounds completely different than the Metzger GT3 4.0. It had almost an e46 M3 rasp when it was revving. Still sounds great but not as good as the GT3.

The Porsche Boxster is a wonderful small sports car. I would expect that the Corvette would be much better above 90 MPH, because it has more downforce via the various aerodynamic stuff it has on it, and will feel more stable at such extreme speeds. But for twisty mountain roads, i imagine the lighter Boxster will be more fun. The Corvette is 3500 lbs, while the Boxster is 3100 pounds. Given that previous front engine style Corvettes couldn't go around curves, it is a relief to see an american car finally competing, and in some areas, exceeding the German products. But in Bavaria they have a lot of twisty mountain roads, and Porsches are optimized for this environment, and unbeaten in the market for that application. The thing i worry about is that the Porsche Boxster was originally supposed to be an affordable product, and it no longer is. Higher models are 90k, which is sadly far about the medium price point that the Boxster was intended for. Call it "Brand Inflation", where the price creeps up every year, just like Colleges in the USA.
