Does the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N drive like a performance car or VIDEO GAME?

The most anticipated review and yet the most disappointing. I'm 51 years old and I own this car in the same color. It never fails to bring a huge smile to my face when I drive it. I've owned many ICE sports cars prior to this. From my 1984 VW Rabbit GTI up to a C8 3LT Corvette. This is my first EV and man am I glad I waited for this one. So many things missed in this review, it feels like a punch to the gut on what a missed opportunity Raiti's had to point out the historical significance and capabilities of this beast. You can literally feel Raiti's disgust for EV's just by the look on his face. This car is not to be compared to other hatchbacks like the Golf R or Civic SI. It is in the class of a supercar and a bargain for what you get, especially when factoring in the $7500 tax credit. It's interesting to point out how much negative attention was given to the "Fake" engine sounds, yet ICE cars do this with enhanced interior engine sound as a norm nowadays. It's meant to "enhance " the experience. Most of the time, I drive mine in normal mode with 601HP on tap with no sound, but when the twisties present themselves, I'll put it n N e-shift mode at the push of a button and tear it up. Like having two cars in one. Joe even you have to appreciate what a rocket ship this is!

@@onetofollow Elantra N is an amazing car, especially for the price. I traded my 2022 Veloster N with the DCT for the Ioniq and have no regrets. I wasn't planning on letting it go and then Hyundai relesed the 5 N.

I'm 57 years old, and just traded in my Nitrous Blue Focus RS for a Soultronic Orange Ioniq 5 N. Couldn't be happier with it. You're right, it's a historic car. There's nothing else like it on the market right now. There are quicker EVs, but none that are more fun. That was even Hyundai's design mandate for it: the fun factor was the most important thing, and if a given feature made the car do a quicker hot lap but sacrificed a little of that fun, they didn't add it. I end up laughing every time that I take it out for a spin, and I haven't felt that way in my RS for years now. (Maybe the novelty will wear off in this case, but the feelings are so visceral that I'm no sure that it will.) The fact that he's scowling while also laughing says everything -- he's letting his preconceived notions deny him that fun factor, but it keeps slipping through. But the 5 N doesn't qualify for the $7,500 tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act. Currently, no Hyundais do. The standard 2025 Ioniq 5 will since it's going to be built at Hyundai's new North American plant, but while the 5 N is technically a 2025, it's an early one that's still assembled overseas.

I actually love the side body lines that Hyundai is doing. It's unique, bold, and futuristic. Reminds me of a Lamborghini Urus. If i was a car designer, I would work for Hyundai or KIA. They seem like they have to have the most fun designing their cars.

Noticed it to. Every other reviewer who’s diehard ICE manuals whatever still say it’s the most fun EV they’ve driven and they appreciate how much Hyundai is at least trying to cater to enthusiasts and give the vehicle some type of “soul”. A lot of reviewers haven’t even gotten the chance to drive one yet and are dying to have a go at it. Everyone is totally obligated to their opinions 100% but as a car reviewer go it unbiased about how it compares to an ICE vehicle. Forget complaining about the sound because they'll have upgrades. The brilliance of this EV is giving it the fake DCT!! EVs are boring as hell to drive but being able to drive like a high performance ICE vehicle, when desired, is game changing. I'm predicting all the other EVs will follow the lead of Hyundai. And all EVs do not handle well and are typically bad on track due to braking and heat issues. The Ionic 5 N can do 2 laps at Nürburgring, which is more than any other EV.

That all black Ioniq 5 N is one bad mamma jamma! I think the $67k is pretty fair to be honest. The car looks like it means business and it backs it up with performance! Not only that, but the tech is insane and fun! There's even practicality too. At some point in the future I'd like to get an electric daily driver so I can drive my Scat Pack on the weekend, and this is definitely on my short list with the new Charger as well.

Nobody is going to track their car. For Track you need atleast 10K to maintain it. And this POS is not going to sell. Rimac is not selling vs ICE Supercars. 70K is a luxury bracket and the ones who will buy will have far more disposable income. I'd rather get a C8 or Lexus IS 500 for this money.

Rivian sales may be down but I don’t think you understand how crazy it is to even build a car company from the ground up. Tesla took years to be profitable, and it took billions from investors to get it there. And POS? How many ICE products get recalled every year? And how many service issues will you have on any ice performance vehicle? With while engine replacements. You have old Nissan Leaf’s with original batteries driving around, first generation teslas over 100k miles with the original battery in them.

@@lostalx and to add, neither of the cars you named, have the capability I5N. You can’t go grocery shopping in a C8 and gap a Hellcat, and the Lexus is RWD only and slower. Also good luck in the winter. Even with snow tires, neither will be as comfortable and capable to drive as an I5N for that price.

I’ve had 2 Camaro’s, 2 Scatpacks, and this is by far my favorite. It’s a relaxed cruiser when you want it and an absolute beast when you need it. Pedal shifters are the icing on the cake for drivers who want to engage with the car. It’s nothing on the market like it.

I might get hate for this, but at 67k there is nothing in the market that is close to this vehicle. People might argue for the Tesla performance but having driven both, I rather much have the Ioniq 5N. The Tesla Performance is great but it lacks some aero flow and some design flaws which leads to scraping your bottom when cornering. The next competitor would be the Lucid or Porsche and those are already out of this world with the pricing. If I had to make the switch to electrification this would be my first choice.

I actually test-drive this car, and what you need to know is that the sound in the actual car is much different from the fake sound heard on the speaker of a smartphone, TV, or computer. It's much more realistic. It even perfectly imitates the rpm fluctuating according to the curvature of the road surface.

You can set it up any way that you want, which is awesome. I have the basic Eco, Normal, and Sport modes set up to be silent, and the regular N mode is also silent by default. I created two custom N modes, one of which is identical to the regular one but with the ignition sounds, and the other of which is the same but with the suspension and the ESC set to normal for more comfortable highway driving (or rough roads). I left the right N button to turn the fake transmission on and off. So I can opt for any mode with or without sounds all with the push of the buttons on the steering wheel. Fast and easy for any mood.

Honestly, this is a good sign for future performance EVs. The price is definitely steep, but it pays off in the right ways. For example, the new Model 3 Performance is cheaper but the brakes are garbage, and you can’t actually track it without seriously risking hurting yourself or others. The N division is killing it, and as tech improves, I think we’ll start to see some great competition from other auto makers.

Usually, not much hate coming from you and I get it. You love high performance combustion cars the same way I do. This is really the first fully electric vehicle that brings a level of engagement, compared to its counterparts. I don't want to sit in a electric car; especially a performance ev and just ride around in silence. I think the cool about this ev, when it comes to aftermarket parts and software in the future. Aftermarket parts? Modern ECUs are way too locked down. Only BMW ECUs are easy to tune. EVs are impossible to mod. No way it'll happen. That said why buy a 70K EV to have a fake experience when you can buy a real C8 or Lexus IS 500 with NA V8 engines.

I’ve been watching his reviews for years and I’m sorry he just missed the boat on this one. He’s entitled to his opinion obviously, but I’ve seen about 30 to 40 reviews on KZbin of this car and everybody just loved it. I got to a dealership and was able to take one for a test drive for 20 minutes and it is amazing!! It’s an electric car with a soul Not just some bland, appliance like Teslas and everything else The dual clutch shifting and the sound make all the difference!! Besides sound is pumped into many ICE cars these days. I’ll be trading in my Kia stinger GT2 For one of these soon enough !! I’m looking forward to when they add more. Sounds like a V6, V8 or V12

I think your review was little bit biased or prone to what you want to think of because you did not provide a certain data like 0-60 which is less than 3.5 and you too much focused on mimicking sound system which this car does not represent as a distinctive feature. Nobody can get the car with 3.5 second for 0-60 in this price point. In addition to that you failed to provide all available comparisons in this segment at the market. You lost your mojo and so much biased prone to your private appetite which does not make any sense. I was little bit disappointed and I lost little trustiness on your review. Comparing to other reviewers, which majority give more positive direction but what you brought here does not justify neither does explain as an experienced reviewer. Also there is a certain price gap between AWD of Ioniq 5 limited which priced around 58000 with 4.7 or around 5 second for 0-60 and this price which is 10000 price difference, then you had to complain over ioniq 5 for the price. I want to let you know that many automobile companies charge at least 5k only with those brake system. You lost your objectivity on what you are supposed to. Sorry Joe.

EV’s are a nice option for a small audience but with sales very down and hopefully the loonies pushing this as the “all will be EV” out of office soon , normal cars will be back . The sound enhancements are a great idea to reach the reluctant ICE fans. As for the car, I wasn't excited by the Ionic 5's looks with the 80s video game lights on the rear, but that black color makes it look like it should be the bad guy's car in an 80s action movie. I would've considered this if it had power memory seats and mirrors. We're a one car household so readjusting the seats and mirrors every time I get in the car is a deal breaker at this price. My Mach-E cost way less and has this feature and it's super convenient for our situation. If they add that to the N in a future model year I'd definitely be considering it.

To answer the question: Yes, it is a video game. It's Gran Turismo/Forza in real life, including the Logitech wheel with adjustible button mapping and selectable steering, suspension, e-diff, power, etc. This car is made for gamers for sure. Kind of feels like Polophony coded this thing and I love it.

In two years you'll be able to buy one used for under $45k. The Kia EV6 GT performance is over $60k brand new. Can get one two years old for around $35k now. Gotta love EVs for how fast they depreciate

This is probably the best boy toy if you can but if you can afford it. My neighbor has this in red and when I drove it, I was like WOW. I only wish it would have a glass or panoramic roof in it and better sound system. All the funny sounds are just a gimmick but the speed is awesome. Great Review Joe.

So say a guy is looking for a good daily, as his 2020 GT500 on E-85 is far too thirsty. He wants something with excellent mileage and this Ionic 5 N made him giggle like a school girl when test driving it. Turning off the noise and engine sounds makes it like an everyday EV. There's no reason to purchase an EV, and leasing with $7500 off is far more attractive. The price gets into the 50's and it's faster than most cars on the road. It should be reliable and decent in lousy weather. Joe, would you consider this or another EV if all you had to drive was your GT350 or Camaro?

They had to remove the power seat motors to make the seat sit lower to the ground, this is a performance ev not a practical one. By all means you can get a 40k base model ioniq 5 with powered seats, it seems like that's more of your target market.

@@yejoonyang9552 That's what nearly everybody seems to miss. The Hyundai engineers confirmed that it was so that the seats could be lowered. The seating position is everything in a performance car. It really makes a difference in this case.

You said during the review that can "send all the power to the rear" but that's technically not correct. There is no link between front and back so what it actually does for RWD is just disable the front motor dropping the overall output 37% to 378HP (282kW).

Tesla model plaids were 150k and nowadays you can pick one up in the 50k all day long. I feel like in a couple of years you could pick one of these up in the 30s, maybe even mid-to-high 20s like the model 3 performance
