I don't understand people who criticize that the engine sound and gearbox are all 'fake'. Hyundai has added “options” for consumers that other companies do not offer, and most importantly, the experience is fantastic. It can be transformed into one of the world's best family EVs at any time, but when you want to drive, it becomes the world's most fun EV to drive. It presents a completely different paradigm to the electric vehicle market, which has so far been obsessed with horsepower or 0-100 time in seconds (of course, IONIQ 5N is also quite fast at 650 horsepower and 3.4 seconds). Hyundai's experience will be a huge competitive advantage in how to bring the positive things of internal combustion engines to electric vehicles in the near future when internal combustion engine vehicles will be banned (EU etc.)
@jaep24958 ай бұрын
in general people like calling things "fake" because it makes themselves feel more "real". that's why they don't have anything further to say after calling something "fake". they won't actually evaluate or look into anything to see merits or understand decisions (isn't it wild that enthusiasts are rating additional sensory feedback in a sports car as a negative just because the feedback isn't "real"?) they just need to convince themselves they're "real" people, not into "fake" stuff

well, this thing is an EV, not an IC vehicle. Not clear to my why EVs need to pretend to be something they are not. But then I have issues with loud Harleys as well....but at least in the case of the Harley, the loudness does make them a little less slow. With this thing, it's all phoniness.
@Theoreticallytexting8 ай бұрын
It’s not phoniness…it’s communication. This is a bilingual car in that even though it is an EV it also speaks ICE (and behaves like ICE while doing so) which allows my 50 plus years of ICE wetware calibration to function as intended. I live about 300 kilometres from the nearest city so I still wouldn’t buy an EV because here in Canada the drives are long and the winters are longer. -40 outside means you’re drawing down the battery with the heater on and that kills any chance of decent range. BUT…if I lived in a city with mountain roads nearby I could see this as being a good thing to have no matter the season.

It is so modern that many people do not know much about Korea because they know about it. The history of the United States and many countries is short. However, Korea has a history of 5,000 years. As the names of many countries have been changed from ancient times to modern times, it has a very good history. Therefore, it has a history of 5,000 years and has lived well to this day. And as a historian knows, it spread the ancient culture of Korea to Japan, and the history and culture of Japan were developed by receiving civilization from Korea. Anyway, if you look at the past history, Korea's history has been better than other countries, civilization has been developed, and education has been high. In the modern era, people who know Korea only know a very short history. And Korea's economy was not good for a while after going through World War II and the Korean War. Originally, Korea has been strong and has a great culture that has continued to this day.

I'm old enough (57) to remember enthusiasts in the very early 80s convinced that cool cars were over: the V8 was dying and they were convinced 'econoboxes' were plastic, souless, no-fun cars. That cohort was happy when the 5.0 Mustang proved them wrong, but a new generation of enthusiasts gravitated towards the hotted up versions of those econoboxes -- the GTI, the Civic Si. Then, in the 90s, a new gen didn't lust after Camaros and Mustangs -- they wanted turbo RX-7s, 300ZXs and Supras. Everytime something new comes along, one group of enthusiasts is convinced it's the end of the world: "you'll pry my big-block, four-speed, 4:11-geared musclecar from my cold, dead hands." But a different (often younger) group discovers car enthusiasm can come in all kinds of different styles. There will be fun EVs. Some folks will embrace them, others will not. I'm waiting for the day that they are a little cheaper and a little lighter, though a used Bolt with decent tires might be worth a look as values come down!

Absolutely! I test drove the Ioniq 5N last week for a bit, and it was insanely fun. This car as a used car a few years from now when it gets cheaper, will be perfect for young people who wants a fast car. This is a great EV for a future boy racer. The endless options in the menus to set the car up to your specific liking and give it different personalities and driving characteristics, will be a dream for a younger generation used to set up cars to race in Playstation games. People can share online setups and hacks they have found and perhaps someone figures out how to update sounds and torque responses etc The possibilities are endless. And if Huyndai or other EV manufacturers make a smaller car with the same technology it would be even better. And I am sure it is coming.

The CORRECT KOREAN pronunciation is "hyon-dé" (2 syllables)... or hyo-dæ
@albertlee54396 ай бұрын
I don't know about Canadian, but the official American pronunciation is to make it sound like "Sunday." Hunday Sunday. The Korean pronunciation is a bit more nuanced. The "hyu" is pronounced by having the "h" go immediately into a dipthong with "yuh" (like in "yup") to make a fast "hyuh" sound. There is no English word that sounds like that. Every word starting with the letters "hy" is pronounced like "high" as in "hyper" or "hyena." Which is why years ago most Americans used to pronounce it "high yoon die". Hyundai USA apparently gave up trying to make the dipthong happen, so they simply eliminated the "y" sound and settled with the "u" in Sunday. The Korean "dai" part (despite its spelling) has the "e" sound in "depth", like "deh". It doesn't end with a "y" sound like "day" or "fly". So, the Korean pronunciation is "hyuhn deh". It's unfortunate that Hyundai spelled their name with "dai" as an ending, because Americans would associate that with a more Japanese pronunciation like Maibatsu, Daihatsu, etc. and they've been dealing with it ever since. IMHO, they should have just gone with something like "HMC" for Hyeondae Motor Company. Can you imagine if BMW had marketed globally with Bayerische Motoren Werke? Even Porsche had to come out with KZbin videos on how to pronounce its name.
@goyangi201416 сағат бұрын

Yeah I like the fake engine sound in this application, it's adding engagement and fun to an EV. I don't want fake engine noises in any other application. I would totally own one of these. Edit: somewhat related I THINK there is a patent that Toyota? Filed that was very similar to this, but included a clutch pedal and 6 speed transmission, to emulate both in an electric car, including faking clutch slip and grip points of a real clutch disc on an EV.

I really don't care about the ICE emulator, I even disabled the fake engine sound augmentation in my RS, but I *do* like the way Hyundai have prioritized driver involvement over safety when it comes to handling and letting you step over the limit. It's big, but they've finally decided to make a hot hatch EV.
@logicalChimp8 ай бұрын
I think the big thing with the engine sound in the I5N isn't that it has fake engine sound, but that Hyundai have done such a good job matching it with the fake gears (inc. downshift, lift-off, redline, etc)... fake engine noise without (manual) gears just sounds... fake. With the gears, and the physical sensations (as hyundai cut the motor on shift, etc), it works as a complete package.
@matthewbrown76598 ай бұрын
@@logicalChimp Yeah... Which seems to have been well done, but it's also a little silly because it's limiting the torque by gear/RPM to emulate a gasoline engine, so you're giving up performance by turning on the emulation. I can see how it will work for some people, basically it's like playing a video game with options to mess around with, but if anyone thinks it will satiate the "purists" then they definitely don't understand the purists in the first place... It's not about any specific behavior of the sound and feel, it's how the physical mechanisms at work create that sound and feel that matter. You might could say that this is to a gasoline car as a video game like Dirt Rally with a full motion simulator is to actual rallying. That doesn't mean that "purists" won't ever like EVs, though, to sell EVs to driving purists you have to stop pretending the EV is something that it isn't, and instead focus on the EVs strengths... I.e., low center of mass, instant torque, extremely dynamic torque vectoring (*especially* in a hot hatch!)... You don't have a gas engine anymore, so ease up on the NVH and allow some sound into the cabin. If it's not direct drive and has gears anywhere, use straight cut gears since they sound epic as their pitch increases with speed. Electric race cars without all the sound deadening can actually sound really cool for the driver, so save some weight, remove noise insulation between the cabin and drivetrain, and let the driver hear the motors spool up as they accelerate. The main thing is going to be weight, though... A smaller hot hatch in the vein of this car but with more real drivetrain noise making it to the cabin, 1500-2000 lbs less weight, and a lower price would be much more interesting even without the ICE emulation gimmicks. I don't want to take my new girlfriend on all the same dates as my ex, that's just sad. I want to have new experiences.
@MidnightGreen46498 ай бұрын
@@matthewbrown7659 pretty much hit it on the head. I dont want to step on anyone's fun because there's no doubt that if i were to drive this i'd love it. But what makes me love driving is the reality of it. The machine basically telling me that if I screw up then I'll be lucky to walk away. The open window shoving air into my face and the heat coming through the sunroof, and of course, the G-force of a corner taken at err... totally legal speeds. I have spent all my life playing racing games and I will continue to do so, there's nothing special about a car that simulates all the things that a game does for me! I really look forward to an EV that pretty much feels like a golf cart to drive.
