Great review! It’s so refreshing to see someone go over the technical stuff that makes a Power Wagon what it is. I ordered a 2021 and have enjoyed all 27k km so far. It’s a beast off-road. It’s heavy so it tends to sink in soft terrain but if it can find traction there isn’t much that will stop it! I’m still amazed with the amount of flex, I’ve driven through some pretty extreme things and it just crawls right through. I tow a 7,000lb trailer so I added SumoSprings (SSR-312-47) to help support the load. Unbelievably effective and zero maintenance. They unscrew in seconds so I can still get full compression off-road if necessary.
@GettysGarage2 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir! I still have to get the truck dirty and slowly test out its limits! I'll probably do what you did and add sometime of rear spring helper because I will be towing with this truck at some point. I'll have to look at sumosprings because thats exactly what im looking for!

I was seriously looking at getting the Tradesman PW package! but another dealer near me had this 2022 PW for literally 200 dollars more MSRP so it wasn't even a question. But I did like the kind of sleeper look. like most people will never know that your truck is beast off-road. And as for the breather, someone mentioned that it could be a 1 way breather valve meaning that it could be submerged but I don't know I have to do some research!

@@GettysGarage Yeah, for that price difference it’s a no-brainer to get the “real” PW. I was lucky enough to find my truck as a used vehicle with 7k miles, so I saved about 4K off of sticker and didn’t have to pay the destination charge. I definitely miss the nicer interior, though!

When I was a kid living in Newfoundland my uncle had a Dodge Power wagon late 50’s. In the 60’s He was a millwright an worked all over NFLD. And the wagon was his get to the salmon pools, believe me the logging roads were fierce. You could sleep in the wagon and keep your workshop and field kitchen. I used the 70’s Toyota land cruisers to get to my spots in Ontario In 80’s, theFj40’s, real nice crawl and I had them setup with skid plates and tires so could get anywhere I wanted. The other day, When I saw the new 2022 power wagon,,I was thunder struck. I’m not sure I have a use for one anymore, but I want one. I’ve been number crunching.... question is diesel or gas ? The 2022 power wagon might be the last truck I ever buy.

FINALLY, someone reviews the important aspects of something - anything. Great job, man! You gave us a really important and honest evaluation of this Ram Power Wagon. Thank you for that. Your review told us why this truck is different from the dozen or so trucks we can order from the Ram truck lineup. You also gave us a very good look at how this is the ONLY TRUCK on the market that is really very close to being a JEEP WRANGLER - suspension-wise. But it's a Wrangler with a bed - not that dumb JT abortion. I have owned Jeep Wranglers for decades and had no idea FCA made another vehicle that could come close to resembling the same successful game plan when it comes to offroad suspensions. Since I am in the market and have been looking at Ram pickups I'd like to thank you for the clever and competent commentary on the Power Wagon. I was leaning toward the TRX but hated the fact they used IFS on that vehicle. Now I can actually have a live front axle - and a locker. It's like I now have my cake and get to eat it too! Thanks, man!!!!!

Picked up a 21 anniversary power wagon in molten orange. Currently over a 100,000 in mods and upgrades. Check out maple off road for parts as you can get a detloft transmission and oil pan skid plate. You need it if you are going to do any serious off road. Also let me know if your going to sell the step ups. I have the rock slider rails on mine but think I will only put the on if I am going off road and just run regular step up for the rest of the time. All my off road trips are planed and weekend stuff so it won’t be a big deal to switch them out. Good luck with the new truck and if your ever down near Ottawa check out calabogie Ontario there are lots of trails and camping spots to go to tons of crown land to play on . We need someone to step up and organize an Ontario power wagon get to gather and do an off roading weekend. Thanks for the great video, new subscriber

Regarding the diff breathers. They all have a one way check valves. Note there is one on the trans and xfer case as well. It is interesting that my '13 wagon runs them up to the shock tower. Here is the thing. When the axle hits comparatively colder water, there is contraction, creating negative pressure (AKA vacuum). This in effect will clamp shut the check valve, regardless if it is 2 inches long or 20 inches long, which is maybe why they said screw it and just shortened it. However, that vacuum has the propensity to pull water in from the axle seals (not good). This is why you see some Aussies with raised diff breather kits. They mount them as high as possible. The kits have sintered filters at the high mounting bracket that allow clean air to move freely in/out of the breather tubes, effectively negating the potential for vacuum. I have one such kit, but just have not gotten around to installing it.
@YKadventures2 жыл бұрын
Same with my 2010. I've experienced the vacuum through the seals hitting cold water when the diffs are hot so the check valve has been removed and like yours my tubes are already as high as they can go under the box and the hood. Same with my Rubicon. I don't get the corner cutting on something so simple when they perfect so many other aspects.

On the road so far it is a comfortable riding truck. Obviously with 2 solid axles it rides a little rougher then a 1500. It also feels way bigger. The one thing that I was not aware of is how bad these things are on gas. Currently im averaging like 13mpg but the engine isnt broke in yet so hopefully that will get closer to 14-15 as im driving alot of highway. I thought the gas would take a hit forsure but I didnt realize it would be like 50% more fuel the my old 1500. I was thinking closer to around 25% more. But either way on road its very nice to drive

Rip the side steps off and put a decent set of mudflaps on the truck. Those duratracs kick up big stones so the mud flaps will help with that!

Umm... my dad had a 79 power wagon and it had 2.91s in it, so. Though power wagon in 79 didn't really mean anything... He bought it around '81. It was a dog on acceleration and that was after he dropped a '70 383 magnum in it (the red engine, not a blue one). from a roadrunner he had.. which was totalled in his driveway by a drunk driver in '73, and then dropped into a 69 Charger that rusted apart at around '84. Engines final home was that 79 pw at around '84, which originally had a 2brl 318.. He never changed out the gear ratio since he didn't want to buy two of them... sold it like in 1994 and bought a 83 short bed, with a 360 in it... originally a 318. That Truck is now rusting away in his driveway...

Thanks for the vid outlining the off road features - That’s a really nice looking truck.it’s interesting to see Ram putting some serious thought into those options. Do you thinks it’s overall size will be a downfall over smaller, lighter more nimble off road vehicles? Was there a one-way valve on that stubby diff vent tube? Thanks Alex and cheers

Can tell you first hand shes a big girl. 100% will have to make 35 point turns where jeep guys or tacoma guys can get around without a problem in tight turns and tight trails.
@GettysGarage2 жыл бұрын
Ya this thing is BIG, most trails are probably going to be tight. Where as a jeep can probably sneak down ATV trails there is no way this truck could fit. But i mean its a truck so you can still get all the benefits of a truck yet still be very very capable in most situations. One thing im happy about is in the snow its so heavy that it will be much more planted on the road. Also thats a very good point about the breather I'm not sure. I'll have to look into that because if thats the case then this thing can go deep into water!

What I don't like about the power wagon option is the 4.11 gear ratio, it gets locked into.(it's pure, overkill) Frankly, I wish the 3.21 were an option. As a best of both worlds option for those of us who want a solid 2500 4x4 truck, but don't really plan to use it for towing heavy crap. But...it's not an option on anything above the 1500. I mean...I don't want to drag race the thing... I rather have fuel mileage, gears
@keedoopop49002 жыл бұрын
Better off with the rebel then decent offroad and can change the gear ratio. This is a 2500. Its a big truck and a gas burner gas mileage isnt something that was even thought of when this was built. Wanted low gears for offroad crawling or towing
@GettysGarage2 жыл бұрын
It may be overkill but this truck is also 7000lbs and with 3.21 gears this truck would feel soo slow. It already feel much slower then my 1500 with 3.21 gears. So I couldn't imagine what this PW would feel like with 3.21. And yes the fuel mileage is garbage I'm averaging 14 mpg which apparently is great for a PW lol. But with 4.10 gears hooked up to the 8 speed trans in 4 low you have incredible control and torque flow to the wheels. the final drive in that case would be 51:1 which is very very low, basically a crawl. So RAM was focusing on off-road performance first before considering anything else which I kinda like. and hey this truck isn't for everyone.

exactly the Rebel is a great alternative to this truck. it comes with front and rear lockers also. But I love having the heavy duty axles and the large ground clearance.

A baby 6.7 cummins isnt in the big truck world my friend. You put a 15 liter engine in your rig then ya maybe that big truck stuff. But also You can't buy a Power Wagon with a Cummins. It weighs an extra 1000 pounds. The suspension is specially designed to be softer and to have great axle articulation so you can actually do cool stuff off road. Also if you are buying a diesel with aftertreatment on it all i have to say is goodluck and hope your pockets are deep. 75% of all our work at my western star dealership comes from Aftertreatment. All those fault codes and derating engines print us money. Its a sad joke.

Congrats on the truck. But 1500 payload for 2500? Your old 1500 can handle that. Not that impressed. The Ford f250 and gmc 2500 has more payload and offroad
@GettysGarage2 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir! Your not wrong when it comes to payload. But this truck isn't really designed to handle something like a horse trailer. If you are going to be towing over 10,000lbs this truck isnt for you. A normal ram 2500 has a payload of over 4000lbs and can tow 20,000lbs. But as far as a f250 or GMC having more off road capability that is incorrect. Between two locking diffs, disconnecting sway bays, factory 2 inch lift, a winch and suspension specifically designed for off road use its not really even close. The ford f250 tremor would be the closest and it doesnt even come with a front locker let alone a winch. Idk its not for everyone but it's exactly what I was looking for!
