US Subs were bad at the start because of bad torpedoes, when that thing got fixed, they were dropping like 3 pointers like Steph Curry

The US subs were not bad. The mark 14 torpedoes (at the beginning of the war) were garbage. They were tested with concrete warhead substitutes, which due to weight differences caused both depth and direction calibration to be completely off with the actual warhead and the detonator was never properly tested and didn't work.

One thing to note is that the US Subs were a lot larger and was build as "Fleet Subs" and not intended to be used to attach merchant ships. The Training and doctrine at the time reflected that. only later in the war they were used the same way Germany used Subs

~8:30 Jack’s stepdad isn’t exactly wrong. The torpedoes used by the US submarines for awhile were super shit. A naval historian on KZbin, Drachinifel, has a fantastic video about the Mark 14s (the aforementioned shit torpedos) called “Failure is Like Onions”. In short, everything was bad about the Mark 14s. They were only tested in one location and because testing was “too expensive” the Bureau of Ordinance decided not to do any tests with the warheads in, using dummy warheads instead. Then the magnetic field in the Pacific was different from where the Mark 14s were tested, so the torpedos ran deep, prematurely exploded, simply didn’t explode, and sometimes even circled around to hit the sub.

Drachinifel also has a multipart series on the entire Pacific submarine campaign that goes into great depth on how bad the conditions were for the poor souls who were fighting in those boats had it. It is well worth the nearly 3 hours in total.

I can not stress enough how good drachnifels videos are. Yeah they are drier, long, and more of a history lecture than entertainment, but sometimes that is just what you need.

Hi. Ships are defined as vessels capable of conducting a trans-Atlantic voyage on their own (London to New York City), and boats are vessels that can not. Now, while modern nuclear submarines can now make such a voyage on their own, they are traditionally referred to as boats.

The Mark 14 was so bad that there was an instance where a US sub hit a Japanese freighter with 13 to 15 torpedoes, none of which exploded. However, when the design was finally fixed, the Mark 14 turned out to be very good and pulled off some successes that were as ridiculously good as its earlier failures were bad.

I did see a documentary where a submarine captain took a Mark 14, hauled it up by it’s tail, and dropped it on its nose. It went boink.

The whole boat vs. ship thing is relatively easy, actually. Taking into account that submarines are boats but can carry boats, the entire ship can carry a boat, but a boat can't, this is not the determining factor. The key to understanding the difference is in how they behave in a turn. Ships lean to the outside of the turn while boats lean into it. This is due to the difference between the Hull Force and the Rudder Force. Now, people may bring up Hydroplane Race boats and how they turn flat without leaning; however, this is due to extra control paddles countering the rudder force to force the boat to plane flat even while turning. So their design still produces more rudder force than hull force, making them lean into a turn naturally. The same is true for submarines, which also want to lean into a turn naturally, but their helmsmen will counteract the rolling force with the hydroplanes to keep the submarine level throughout the turn.
@wampumscout
@wampumscout 4 ай бұрын
If I'm not mistaken, you can tell the difference when they turn. When it turns, if it turns inward when they do it's considered a boat. But if they turn and it leans to the outside it's considered a ship.

If I remember correctly, the general rule of thumb in distinguishing ships and boats is: *if the vessel is turning & leans towards the turn (turns left, it leans left like bikes and motorcycles do, for example), it's a "boat". If it's leaning away from the turn (turns left but leans right), it's a "ship"* Source: Not What You Think, KZbin

1:15 subs are referred to boats because ships usually aren’t supposed to be under the water, and for what’s a ship and boat the Royal Navy goes off of if it has more than 3 decks it’s a ship. (Or well at least it’s what my farther goes off of, he was in the Royal Navy) Edit: drachinifel has done an amazing video on the mk14 I recommend you watch it.
