Your videos alone made me a better fighter. I was a pure striker advocate, I learned about not being caught most of the times by a grappler. but my teacher and a bit of other guys who excel me in striking, by usage of grappling literally rolled me over. One of your videos about tai ji I think, but not only one, you point that grappling/wrestling is great and it hits me, so I abandoned my childish behavior and now I learn and use grappling for my offensive stances. It evolve my defense a lot and made me more comfortable and confident when people comes "too close". Not only I can grapple now, but my strike evolved to the point of I making a nasty usage of my elbows, knees and even foot stomping ( which is allowed in my martial arts style, but with caution cause it is for self defense so it's targeted in dirty ways). I'm grateful for all your teachings and knowledge. Always hoping for the best for you and you family, health and prosperity for you all

Ramsey, I actually took the time tonight to use the SEARCH 🔍 function to watch a handful of old videos you made on food- eating, cooking, shopping, nutrition. It was very interesting! I liked how you showed your cooking skills on the stove in one and the best one was the shopping in a Shanghai market and walking around your local neighborhood. I’m curious where you learned to cook anyway.

Drilling clinches is also one of my favourites, being one of the most basic position drills for grappling. I feel safe enough doing them without a mat when training with friends, as long as we don't work on any trips or takedowns. Just positions.

The flying knee to the clinch just made me so happy! It's the only way I could get to the clinch "safely " while growing up. I started in shotokan and for the many years that was my go to entry. I also had alot of experience of them redirecting my knee to the side while in the air. putting my hip against them and my arms landing in a head lock. Which as a kid I'd continue the momentum and we'd spin down into scarf 😁 Just a wave on nostalgia

What I love about cliche sparring, is that is very simular to Qin Na drills, but taught properly. Too many Qin Na practitioners just do those drills by rote with put actually applying the actual techniques dynamically. The drills are what show uyou the basic technique, and what Ramsey is doing here is actually applying them, and training them, those are NOT the same thing a d too many Kung fu practitioners don't realize that.

Clinch work is really applicable in boxing, as well. Even if you aren't there for long and the ref breaks you up, it's still enough time to find an advantageous position that can have you sneak punches in or one where you are using less energy than your opponent which gasses them out more.
@fennec812

I’m dangerously uninformed about most kung fu styles, but this is what the fairy ubiquitous vertical fist, “straight down the center” punch always seemed like it was for to me. At least, aside from the damage to the hand that’s popularly brought up. As a way to slip through a pretty shelled up opponent’s guard into inside clinch position, though, it seems pretty tailored for that. If it bops the guy on the way end, that’s just a cherry on top. I kind of feel like the error has been in divorcing that style of punching from that specific function. I’m a lot less convinced of how useful it is unless we are bare knuckle for some reason, I guess. As an entry into the clinch, though, sure.

Heyy ramsey, I just found out about karate combat and I really don't know what to think to be honest ahahhahah. It looks like full contact kickbox in a way but has a few things that differ. Have you seen this already? if so do you have any thoughts on it? Do you think this thing will gain popularity? (seems to be around since 2017) and lastly, does it look like something that would benefit traditional and Olympic karate practitioners, when it comes to getting into the combat sports scenario?

Hi, coach! Have a question for you. I'm 37, training in BJJ for a little while, 2-3 months or so. Didn't do any combat sports before, trained 3-4 years with weights (powerlifting big 3 mostly, lifting somewhat heavy). For these 3 months I've been doing bjj, I had multiple minor injuries, broken/disclocated toes, sprained ligaments in arms. It's a common practice in our gym, and I've seen a lot of similar injuries happened to other guys, sometimes more serious stuff. Sometimes I see guys jumping guards, trying to do amplitude throws without solid breaking fall skills. Most of us are going really fast as we wrestle, I still can't stay calm when my partner goes as fast as he can and does chaotic, often senseless movements. What bothers me is the fact that our coach doesn't really addresses this, with the attitude like "it is what it is, it's all in the game", etc. It can be the case if our gym was hardcore fighting gym, but no, 99% are hobbyists here, white/blue belts. Coach himself is real deal, 3 dan black belt, with a dozens of professional MMA fights, but there is hardly anyone who can be instructor other than him. All my own injuries could have been prevented if I have known that: - the faster you go, the more potential is there for injury; - the more extended arms/elbows are when you wrestle, the more weak/injury prone they are. I had to figure that by myself, even when I asked our coach how to practice safe, all I could get was "just relax, calm down, don't go hard". Ramsey, my questions are: 1) Are there more fundamental principles we can use to limit injuries? 2) Should I try to convince the guys to go slower, or is it entirely my responsibility to stay calm and collected? There is one guy who is really cool and efficient with his movements, and I like to roll with him, because it's much easier to stay calm when your partner doesn't do random spastic stuff.

Hey! Here's my 2 cents as a wrestler. The taller you are standing, the farther you fall so practice being able tomove as crouched low as possible and keep your arms glued to your torso. Your goal is to make handfights happen, tie up as soon as possible. They can't wildly accelerate while you're stuck to them. Learn how to turtle, it's a bit more resistant to being rolled and jammed around then standard guard and lean on your opponent every chance you get. Stalling might be bad competition behavior but it's a great training skill to keep yourself safe with the newbies. I've got nothing for the jumping guard, that's just wildly unsafe

Furthermore, what do you think of grappling techniques in last century boxing/bare knuckle boxing, E.g. Chancery. Efficacy in MMA or street fights. I’m reading an 1855 book and realised they have/had some and I think it was yourself who said Boxing had/has grappling (which blew my mind).

Ramsey, does boxing work/work the way it normally does in a street fight? Yes, I really do box quite a bit and for sometime (Kickboxing style). But is it easy to break your hands with knuckles or harder to duck punches? If so, does the mean all the open and stuff in TKD etc is a lot more efficacious than people realise? I love boxing and do it, I’m not having a go at it.
