Delta stream is actually completely busted: it removes all flying weaknesses, so mega rayquaza is resistant to electric, neutral against rock and 2x weak against ice.

Yeah, as long as it's on a flying mon, it's most certainly one the best individual abilities that isn't Wonder Guard or a trapping ability. You nullify 3 weaknesses and also nullify weather, including the primal weather conditions.

Not completely convinced on this, like is it better than fur coat, that gives you double defense? Or intimidate, which makes you take less damage from all physical attacks? Even then, winning a neutrality isnt that useful bc you dont really wall stuff like that, so its only good on flying types with natural neutralities to rock, electric or ice

Battle Bond wasn't just nerfed, it was completely reworked. Instead of accessing Greninja-Ash, it now gives a +1 to Attack, Special Attack, and Speed _once per battle._

aura break doesn't add a resistance to fairy or dark, it turns the multiplier of fairy aura and dark aura from a buff to a debuff. closer to D I'd say. ice face gets restored under hail, so it's technically better than disguise. misty surge doesn't boost fairy moves. receiver and power of alchemy are exactly the same thing, but are not rated the same. well baked body is better flash fire, not even close to water compaction (which isn't an immunity)

@@NathanLikesChicken curious medicine is not what you think it is, I never heard of it before so I looked it up when you mentioned it as you made it sound like prankster+haze which has been a staple in Balance hackmons for a few gens now. It only erased the stats on your allies so it's useless in singles. If you make another video keep it in mind cause you rank a few abilities as being worse than curious medicine when in reality curious medicine doesn't exist so those other abilities such as opportunities are the closest to counters to that. Also prankster haze works against dark types cause haze targets the field and not the opponent which is why it's used in balanced hackmons high ladder more than topsy turvy.

Water Compaction is similar to Well Baked Body but it isn’t actually an immunity. You still have to take the hit to get the +2 which makes it objectively worse by a bit

I think the most notable difference is in how to use the abilities proactively. WBB stops the move from doing anything, whereas WC let's you multistack in one turn and proc weakness policy. In most cases, immunity is still better, but at least WC has a niche.

Primordial Sea and Desolate Land end as soon as the Primal Groudon/Kyogre switches out, so unlike Drought and Drizzle you can’t teambuild around their weather. I think Primordial Sea is straight-up worse than Drizzle, while the two Sun abilities could go either way.

If we're judging it in a vacuum, Primordial Sea is absolutely better than Drizzle. The ability to override Desolate Land is fantastic, and an immunity to fire is useful. Imagine a steel type with Primordial Sea and a decently strong water move. That pokemon would now have 10 resistances and 2 immunities. It would only be weak to two types, one of which is threatened by rain-boosted water moves.

Aroma veil is definitely not useless a defensive mon being immune to taunt and encore is pretty huge. It's really weird to me to put below anger point which will very rarely trigger since usually if you get crit you die.

Koraidon and Miraidon don't just boost their attacks for that specific weather, it's just a free life orb tier boost on top of the terrain/weather

Something they missed about dancer: it also copies dancing attacks. Meaning that if you switch in on an opposing revelation dance or petal dance etc, you get to attack the same turn you switch in (or you get 2 attacks in 1 turn if youre already in and tank the hit!). This is big in NU rn where the oricorio forms are running the tier

One factor I didn't hear being mentioned was competition. For example there are SO many users of Intimidate. So if we are assessing how strong the Ability is based on if a random new Pokemon got it, an Intimidate user is probably not going to be as viable as it would be if there weren't as already other good users of the Ability. A Pokemon with an Ability that is on paper not as good, but barely anything has it, is perhaps more likely to be able to carve out a niche somewhere.

@@jmcbango Choice Scarf Blissey can be better in certain cases. If you switch in on a +2 Attack sweeper, Scarf gives you the speed advantage which essentially lets you counter-sweep the opponent's team. Very good if your opponent is setting up Stored Power

Chlorophyll, Sand Rush, Swift Swim, and Slush Rush are also different from most other “situational” abilities because the situation in which it occurs is directly linked to an effect that *YOU* can control. So you can build whole teams around activating this situational effect, and it works especially because there is usually synergy between the effect of the weather and the ability (water-type attack boost and speed boost at the same time). Compare this to stuff like the relatively good Bulletproof and the bad Anger Point, where it’s *your opponent’s sets* and *luck* which determines their activation trigger respectively

Idk if they changed it, but you don't need allies for steely spirit to work, it still boosts your steel type moves by 50% and is actually a really good ability in ZU

I thought aura break didn't act as a dark and fairy resistance and only reversed the effects of dark and fairy aura, although it may have been updated. Quick feet also does remove the paralysis speed drop, increasing your speed by 1.5 times.

There's some pretty funny abilities to get wrong, especially since some of the abilities in the useless tier effect the teammate and itself. Notably I think flower gift and aroma veil are better. +1 attack and sp.def in sun is just better protosynthesis a lot of the time, and being immune to taunt with Aroma veil is nice.

Given that I thought electric surge and hadron engine would be higher because they would be boosting all the future paradox mons which theres at least 3 viable users in OU right now. spending 3 hours ranking every ability? braver than any US marine. Really entertaining video though, gave me some good enjoyment while hatching eggs and I found the discussions around ability comparisons rather engaging. I got some thoughts that I'll put below, but with ranking 300 abilities yall put in all the work and it's easier for me to watch and give feedback than make a whole tier list so huge props to you for undertaking that task (and thanks for giving me some fun things to think on). Main thoughts: Transistor/Dragon's Maw imo should be closer to Adaptability, as while it's single type, they provide a stronger boost. Transistor/Dragon's Maw work mechanically by multiplying your (Special) Attack stat by 50% when using an Electric/Dragon move. It's definitively better than Rocky Payload and the like, and the raw strength of the single type pushes it to around Adaptability tier for me. Calcs for comparison: 252+ SpA Choice Specs Transistor Regieleki Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Blissey: 177-208 (24.7 - 29.1%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO 252+ SpA Choice Specs Adaptability Regieleki Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Blissey: 158-186 (22.1 - 26%) -- 5.9% chance to 4HKO I think Comatose is a hard ability to rank, as it's either solid or game breaking. You mostly analyzed it through the lens of preventing status, which makes sense if you primarily main tiers like OU (no shade); however, given the right tools it's absurd and has been banned in BH since gen 7 because of this. The crux is that Comatose lets you use Sleep Talk at any time, which normally sounds useless, except Sleep Talk ignores the priority bracket of moves it calls. So a fast Comatose user with phazing (Deoxys-Speed was the primary abuser in BH) is able to continuously shuffle the opponents team, forcing hazard chip, without letting the opponent attack. This is obviously incredibly unhealthy. I'd say it puts Comatose into game breaking, but due to the specific move/stat requirements, I could see that pulling it down from there. I'd still put it at least in A+, right below Prankster since Prankster also has the caveat of move pool but less stat requirements. Minor thoughts: Rivalry also does 25% lower damage against Pokemon of the opposite gender, so I'd say it's even more shaky and probably sub-Cud Chew. Misty Terrain also doesn't buff Fairy type moves, only debuffs dragon type moves. I'd probably place it below Psychic Surge because of the offensive utility of Psychic Terrain but I think that's a real minor point and Misty Terrain is still hella good defensively. And lastly, I'd bump Solar Power over the Cud Chew line and past Sand Force because while you do still take chip, Solar Power is a stronger buff, being a 50% Special Attack buff while Sand Force is a 30% buff to Rock, Ground, and Steel type moves. Solar Power is stronger across all moves, while Sand Force is weaker and narrower but no downsides.

Solar power has a downside, plus it is limited only to special moves. Sand force has no downsides and can boost special or physical moves. Even though sand force is only currently distributed to physical attackers, I could see it as an interesting way to support a special attacking rock type that otherwise would just suffer under bad move syndrome.

That Anticipation point by finch Yea if you're finch you should know that this Garchomp CAN run Fire Blast, but knowing that a Pokemon is running coverage can tell you a lot, especially since you don't have to guess/switch around to figure it out Especially in some cases where knowing a Pokemon's move can literally tell you it's EVs

I'm surprised finch went with that take. For gigabrains, any information helps piece together the opponent's sets and helps you deconstruct their team. However, also on the flip side, most sets in top tournament play are the same iterations of 3 or 4 solved sets with little up for question. I'd say anticipation helps you make faster reads in ladder play but it would have next to no use in high level tournaments because they don't really deviate into sets you couldn't deconstruct with other info anyway. For example, Garchomp on a team with a Zapdos or Magnezone probably just isn't running Fire Blast though if it could. That Garchomp is most likely rocks with helmet or leftovers. But if the team is otherwise turbowalled by Corvi, then fire blast is pretty obvious. Finch would know about the Garchomp's coverage moves just by looking at it in context.

I doubt it. I was surprised that Adaptability was given an instant S rank without hesitation, but Beads/Sword of Ruin is basically just adaptability but includes the buff for coverage moves too. The interesting thing is that -ate abilities is also just literally a 4/3 boost but to normal moves. It might help shore up bad move syndrome (in the case of aerialiate or physical galvanize) but otherwise, refrigerate or pixilate usage is just a downside compared to adaptability because it forces you to run moves that don't have a secondary effect.

I can’t remember where swords/beads of ruin were placed on the list but considering a lot of mons don’t run stab on both of their types it would make sense for them to be higher if they are. Also my original comment was more in reference to gorilla tactics when they said it was basically adaptability but trading only being used for stab moves to being choice locked but gorilla tactics is a lot stronger

Is corrosion really that good? It lets you poison two more types, which is good for spreading toxic more easily. But it does nothing against abilities that prevent status or guts Pokémon. Like, how many Pokémon would become broken if they had just one totally free turn to set up with disguise? Would you give that up to toxic a handful more Pokémon? Plus this is a gen 9 list, so really only poison types can use toxic now. It’s not chansey poisoning stuff.

Just saying, if Garganacl had good as gold, it would get poisoned by spikes, poison touch, poison point, and burnt with flame body. Is gholdengo's typing what keeps it safe from tspikes. Purifying salt directly prevents getting any status, no nuzzles, flame bodies, effect spores nor poison touches, toxic/flame orb trading... I prefer it above good as gold in AAA since mostly it's only better to prevent defog (which can activate defiant/competitive and a scrappy rapid spinner never fails to clear hazards, plus that speed buff to urself) and the highly situational black sludge trick/switcheroo

I was very curious and doubtful, so i had to test the solar power OHKO theory and in practice i doubt it happens, it can but it needs the toxapex to have no HP and no SpDef EVs for it to OHKO (~125% damage in that case). Of course taking modest charizard, under sun, using overheat with choice specs, fire blast has 37.5% chance to OHKO, flamethrower as max can do 86% damage. Now in a physical toxapex with HP and Def EVs no SpDef... well i copypaste results: 252+ SpA Choice Specs Solar Power Charizard Overheat vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Toxapex in Sun: 256-302 (84.2 - 99.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO Aaalmost, but doesn't OHKO any normal toxapex, which will either have max HP, SpDef or both depending which type of wall, but even physical wall survives 1 overheat. Fire Blast does 71-84%, Flamethrower does 58-68%, but it has to be modest and usually they run timid for max speed, in which case Overheat does 76-90% to physical wall toxapex, then counting the stat drops, protect and the leftovers heal, it never kills it and wastes its overheats/fireblasts, so you can try test to hurt it a lot or kill it if has no protect or leftovers, but if not, switch.

Geez that was a ride lol. I will say, Miraidon and Koraidon don’t just boost the attack/spa. Atk when using electric or fire moves respectively. It is a flat boost to their offensive stats. Koraidon is +atk and Miraidon is +spa. Atk. I wanna say it’s 1.3x, it might be 1.5x tho tbh idk for sure. If you ask me, this is probably game breaking. Especially when you consider Sun being so good rn and electric terrain also being really good bc of quark drive mons

Something to consider about aura break is that it only inverts the effect of Xerneas/Yveltals abilities. If they aren’t on the field, it does nothing. Meaning it’s extremely situational.

innards out is banned in aaa and bh lmao basically it's a final gambit destiny bond - does damage equal to hp had before fainting. while io isn't crazy on a 55 base hp slug, slap it on high hp mons (ex. a defenseless chansey), switch it into even a weak move, and pick up a potentially game-winning free kill, no risk or skill required. def at least a, overall better than nerfed protean imo anyways, great vid as always!

thank you nathan enjoyer of chicken for 3 whole hours of content but id argue that flash fire beats volt absorb since electric already has a ton of pokemon that are immune unlike fire where with boosts sun or choice items a fire pokemon can bulldoze through a team regardless of type effectiveness and having that immunity is very useful and is why heatran is so prevalent and can destroy the rona

Dancer can copy stuff like revaluation dance and aqua step among a few other moves, not the same as opportunist. Dry skin also is only a 25% increase to fire type moves, and rain is usually better than sun so idk

Rivalry doesn't just boost your damage against the same gender, it also reduces your damage against the opposite gender. So 50% of the time it's a buff and 50% of the time it's a nerf.

It depends on the meta. Lando for example is always male and it's like, always in OU. Rivalry was used in VGC 2012 for example, because of Lando and his friends. Ray Rizzo used an all female team (when possible) to counter that.

I don't get how Ice Face is not an A tier ability, yes, it doesn't block special attacks, but it can be regained and (as far as I remember) doesn't give you any HP penalty for being used multiple times (unlike Disguise which is single use only)

12:59, aura break just reverses the effects of dark/fairy aura. essentially, it only works if you're fighting xerneas or yveltal. so it'd go in better than useless tier, or at BEST, situational. it doesn't just outright reduce fairy/dark damage lol

I also feel like were undervaluing gorilla tactics quite a bit. On paper, yeah your choice locked, but in practice, 100/100 times you will also run another choice item. We ran this same logic with sheer force and magic guard, so why not gorilla tactics. That ability is the biggest reason why darm got banned. It couldve been any decently fast decently strong physical attacker and it would have gotten banned. I would definitely call it S

Gonna mention things I think would actually influence tiers Adaptability vs abilities like aerialate - I think adaptability is better since it just turns all your stab moves into essentially super effective hits, which would benefit pretty much every pokemon. On the flip side, not every pokemon wants Aerialate (for instance Dragonite would be more than happy having Aerialate b/c extreme speed, but Garchomp would not.) It's definitely harder to use abilities like aerialate despite the changed normal type move getting increased in power to a 1.8 stab for the new type, which is still worse than adaptability's 2.0 stab. Infatuation - the chance of a failed attack is 50%, but the activation of Cute Charm's effect is only 30%. I might be crazy but I think Corrosion is a bit overrated, mainly since you're only going to be inflicting poison or toxic on steel pokemon and poison, with poison being far less common in general. That and, with gen 9 especially, the more relevant pokemon want to take you out as fast as possible with their huge power levels, so poison wouldn't amount to much on average besides taking advantage of venoshock (though it would definitely be good against Dondozo, but you can poison it without Corrosion). Definitely good, but I think it'd be more in A rather than A+. Curious medicine is an ally specific ability, it clears stat changes of your ally, not all the pokemon on the field. Flower gift includes the user, which makes it much more useful. Same applies to Steely Spirit. Merciless has a similar deal to Corrosion to me, but I think it's better than Corrosion to be honest. A guaranteed crit on a pokemon that's poisoned seems busted. Less useful in gen 9 since toxic was removed from a good number of pokemon, but considering almost every pokemon got toxic before gen 9, having a guaranteed crit + toxic is absolutely crazy. The only drawback is that it doesn't work on steel or poison type pokemon, but that's still 16 other types you can get guaranteed crits on, which I think is better than being able to poison steel and poison types imo Oblivious is a bit underrated, definitely situational since it also has the ability to block the effects of taunt and intimidate (so Landorous T and Incineroar now have a counter). And applies to Own Tempo. Overcoat can also block powder moves, which prevents the use of spore as an example (Also rage powder but that's for doubles). Special distinction about Well-Baked Body, gives the pokemon a fire immunity AND increases defense sharply. Wonder Guard should absolutely be in game breaking. Any bulky pokemon or one that can learn burn up, need I say more? I hope with all these things I can clear the cud chew line ;u; But seriously, this is a really well made video! I think a concept that you guys were hitting on all video was for situational abilities and why you just had a gut feeling that some were better than others. The way I see it, situational abilities can be divided into 2 categories: situation in my control and situational out of my control. This is why I think stuff like chlorophyl and berserk are better than anger point and cloud 9; the first two are in your control as the player, you can build around these abilities and make them useful, whereas the latter two are entirely in the opponents control. You can't at all guarantee that your opponent will crit you or that they'll have a weather team, but you can greatly increase the odds that you will have sun up or that you'll go down to berserk range.

Oblivios doesn't just prevent attaction, it also prevents the attack drop from intimidate. And more importantly gives the mon taunt immunity, which should be enough to at least clear the cud chew line

Harvest should definitely be higher up in the list. Not only does it help prolong the time a pokemon can be out on the field, but there are many strategies build around it and the interaction with sun, giving it a guarenteed harvest trigger. This combined with a salac berry and a boosting move/substitute combo makes some pokemon extremely scary if you don't deal with them quickly, especially in the lower tiers of play.

I'm only a 3rd of the way through when typing this but I think Ice Face is an A ability because its an immunity against a physical attack but it isn't a 1 time use as stated in the video. If you switch out it will restore it and hail will restore that form too.
