Trophies aside, 2018/2019 Lionel Messi is the closest thing I’ve ever seen to God on a football pitch. EVERYTHING he did was inch-perfect, and his best eye test season. In any given league, CDR, or UCL game you could count on him to completely control the game. His movements were so incredibly fluid, his weight of pass was the best it’d ever been. He was at his free kick scoring peak, and 18/19 contains some of the best goals in his entire catalogue. My favorite Messi-viewing season ever. I think all of this is why nobody can begrudge his 2019 bdr win. Watching him was like watching football personified. My GOAT forever

Kaka wasn't done enough justice in his Ballon do'r year by Lyes, so let me enlighten you. This specific Milan team was a shadow of it's former self, most of it's key players such as Gattuso, Maldini, Inzaghi were aging, football expected age to retire or go to a lower level team/league was around 30-33. Going into the champions league campaign (One of the most dominant campaigns ever), not a single soul would have Milan as one of the favourites but rather the Barca's, the United's or the Chelsea's for example. Kaka this season was finally reaching his potential and was time for him to enter his prime. Although his G/A weren't as high as other players this year, his performance levels were undisputed, he single handedly CARRIED milan to that champions league title when they had no right being there and got revenge for the embarrasing champions league final 2 years prior that pained many Milan fans. As a pure 10, although he completely contradicts the narrative of it, he was more known for his brute playstyle by being a physical phenom with his pace and physicality whilst also having the elegance of a 10. He got 10 goals and 3 assists, which at the time im pretty sure wingers or even some world class strikers have yet to reach but he achieved it as a pure 10 and even then, what captivated you most was his dominance on the field. He had absolutely everything, Pace, Technique, Vision, Passing, Physicality he was on a completely different stratosphere to every single player that season. To end it off, his manager that season Carlo Ancellotti, was once interviewed on who he'd put in his all-time 11 from his illustrious career, this was after he was appointed by Real Madrid the 2nd time, after their 3-Peat etc. To give context, he managed teams like Juventus, Bayern, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Parma etc. Even Ballon D'or players such as Zidane, CR7, Modric etc. He chose Kaka for that number 10 role, that's how good he was.

Before messi and Ronaldo , it could be a single tournament in which they did well that could win them the ballon dor ( like the R9 one or the cannavaro one ) . And sometimes they didn’t win anything significant but had insane numbers ( below average when compared to messi or Ronaldo ) . Every season messi has won , he has been individually dominant except 2021 and 2023 . Iniesta may have won the WC but his numbers aren’t even close . Same with van dijk which is unlucky since defenders are always at a disadvantage, hence the small number of winners . And in 2021 and 2023 , which are closer in terms of stats and trophies , it does come down to preference, do you go for someone who did good with club and great with country with really good stats ( messi) or do you go for someone who has an amazing season for club with non existent seasons with their respective country and amazing stats ( haaland and lewandowski ) . People tend to choose the former . Also you have to look at a broader perspective, haaland and lewandowski are pure finishers , they don’t control matches like messi . It’s unlucky that lewandowski and haaland are from smaller footballing nations but there’s nothing you can do about that .
