Apparently poise isn't what it used to be in DS3 mechanics-wise. It applies to a completely different scenario, which is stupid because it was better the way it was before.

***** So I guess you're okay with strength and defense builds being completely unviable because everything staggers and a lot of build variety being lost, so dex weapons reign supreme because you get almost no benefit from using heavy weapons/armor.
@D1ab0lical8 жыл бұрын
***** Awful times, but these times are even worse. Havels is hard to wear without going over 100% weight ratio, so havel katana wouldn't work as well.
@chrislittle48058 жыл бұрын
Heavy weapons are great at trading blows through hyper armor and at using their range and delayed attacks to roll punish. And they also do more damage on backstabs and ripostes due to their insanely high AR. So I wouldn't say they are completely useless. Build variety is definitely lacking at the moment though. And heavy armor is VERY underwhelming.

I don't really see how people consider Pontiff to be an unfairly hard boss. he's fairly deep into the game, and the player (even if they're a newbie) has already had experience with aggressive enemies and bosses like the Abyss Watchers, so it's not really anything new; it's just a big step up. Fighting Pontiff took me many, many tries to beat, but I mastered him by the time I beat him and it was super triumphant, improving my ability as a player. I even beat in on ng+ on the first try without taking damage. Not only that, but the run up to him is really quick if you opened up all the shortcuts, so you can easily run back and face him again if you die. Personally, he's in my top 10.
@Nick-zz6te8 жыл бұрын
Your comment is exactly what I think lol. I don't get his ranking sometimes. Pontiff's lore, music, design and his difficulty should put him way up higher. It was a beautiful fight.

I know may sound a bit strange but ... I genuinly dislike the easyness of access most somewhat challanging bosses have in DkS 3. I realy can't tell you why, probably just some stupid "time spend = difficulty" parallel my subconscious makes, but I have not felt the same triumph over any DkS 3 boss I had for 1 or 2. And it's not like I hadn't had my fair amount of deaths to bosses. For me having a difficult treck to a boss is as important as a hard boss itself I guess. Then again I did realize that you can run past enemys rather quick (somewhere around Sens on my first DarkSouls experience) so figuring out the best path to take to get to a boss that gives me trouble without taking damage and in a speedy manner allways was part of DarkSouls for me and 3 is kinda missing out in that regard. Nostalgia doing it's thing I guess.

Pontiff, lore-wise, i hate since he's such an evil bastard. Fight-wise, i fucking adore him for being iconically badass, tough, not being annoying to repeat fight due to the shortcut chain (which felt even more satisfying, almost like a series of checkpoints that all interconnect perfectly). One thing i do admittedly despite about the fight however is the absurd length of his combo, and his ability to extend or shorten it any time he fucking wants, making predicting his combo almost impossible thus making getting hits in a massive chore. His theme is at least beautifully epic enough to make dying not that bad, since i can listen to it again and again XD

The one thing I hate about the Smelter Demon is the tracking overheads. In fact, the hit boxes in Dark Souls 2 feel fucked in several places throughout the game. Other than that, he's pretty damn cool

Definitely true, but the game's overall mechanics are more to blame I think. I mean...those fucking turtles
@bulink50878 жыл бұрын
The player hit boxes are super defined the problem mostly comes from enemies being able to slide turn to hit you. though if you know when to dodge every move save for about two is dodge able easly. most of it is timing but some attacks like dark magic attacks are crap due to the hit box being larger then most of the spells. and pvp in dark souls 2 is bad mostly becuase of lag from player to playre. I have done my research on this topic becuase I like two the most.

+theDeModcracy Dark Souls 2 in general has more poor design in almost every aspect of a souls game than the others (thanks B-team). It's still a great game in its own right, but it's still not on par with the others. And yes, those turtles can burn in Iron hell
@bulink50878 жыл бұрын
DoctaDaKing There is the B team joke a lot of the guys who made dark souls 2 worked on one and demon souls if anything its the Director, and even then a lot of the aspects of dark souls 2 are far better then dark souls 1 a lot of the problems came with with the English translation for items and boss souls butchers them greatly. When you talk about maps the only bad one is the connection to the iron keep. and the level designs themselves are way better then dark souls 1's Dark souls one levels were very set path, where as dark souls 2 wanted to give you more then one path the get where you are going the Iron Keep is its best showing. you can go up the to face a few Iron knights and then hop on down or you can go through the fog gate at the lower section of the keep

So happy that we're getting to my favorite bosses. As for feedback about Pontiff's ranking: He's personally my favorite boss in Dark Souls III and one of the few that I'll put a summon sign down for just so I can fight him again and again and hear his fantastic theme music; however, I understand that that's a matter of opinion. What I'm curious about is your reasoning for docking points from design and difficulty; the balance of incredibly aggressive first phase to less aggressive second, as well as the atium shadow phantom he summons which I thought was an incredibly clever is what I love about the boss, and even with those, he was still an amazingly tough fight until I finally figured out how to parry him. Oh, I just realized that maybe the fact he can be parried is what dropped him down points in difficulty. That would make sense.
@Nick-zz6te8 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. A 7/10 difficulty and a 22/30 design, I don't understand why even if you can parry him that shouldn't drop him so low.
@servingruin28488 жыл бұрын
He did say in his first video that difficulty is about how hard the fight is while being fair tho. so the fight is hard but the problem is that some of pontiffs combos are a flurry of attacks with terrible hitboxes making the fight a how fast can you tap the b button and backtrack to find op ring to be able to dodge his attacks without getting hit. pontiff is a damn hard fight but for some of the wrong reasons. he comes early mid game when you aren't really prepared for him. there is no hype to the fight whatsoever amd personally he had some of the best lore. there was a lot is satisfaction to be had when I finally bested him but not knowing on my first run how important he was to the plot made him seem not as cool when I finally beat him. while a boss Like nameless king had statues of himself everywhere and was mentioned in numerous item descriptions so the hype was there for him and the difficulty was there for him. plus nameless kings difficulty will be fair, it will be 10 because he is still hard even with his attacks being super telegraphed and his high damage outputs punishing a miss
@Nick-zz6te8 жыл бұрын
Gage Smith He's fairly deep in the game even if you are newbie and there have already been aggressive bosses before already like Abyss Watchers. It's just a big step up. His boss fight not being hyped doesn't affect his ranking but i do think he should have had a cutscene. It was a surprise I suppose and the moment I walked into the arena, I knew I was in for something awesome. Yes he probably has the best lore in the game but once you enter the boss fight arena it's an amazing fight. I think he is hard but isn't an unfair boss at all. Once you understand his mechanics, there are many moments where you can punish and his super long combo is very obvious when he is about to enter it and if you're pretty far away from him, he even stops the combo early. I don't see anything wrong with his hitboxes. Every time I died was because of me being reckless and missing my rolls. The fight just really pushes you and for me after I defeated him, I could definitely see myself as a better player. Amazing boss fight. Personally one of my favourite bosses. I don't see much wrong with the boss fight. I just deal with it and push myself to become master the fight. Same with King of the Storm. Many people complain about the camera angle of the fight and for me that wasn't an issue. I think Nameless King is a brilliant fight too.

Hey, you know the React channel? They did Teens React to Dark Souls 3... and one of them beat Iudex Gundyr on his first try, even though I'm quite sure none of them had ever played DS3 before (although some of them had played DS1 when the channel did that game earlier). You familiar with the theory that the Lost Sinner is actually the Witch of Izalith herself reincarnated after the Bed of Chaos was destroyed by the Chosen Undead? There's a lot tying her to the Witch- she's explicitly female, much taller than a human, drops the Old Witch Soul which can be used to make the Chaos Blade, her handcuffs boost Pyromancy when you buy and equip them later despite her not using it herself and, most importantly, the bug that crawls through the eyehole of her mask during her opening cutscene is the same model as the Sunlight Maggot you find and kill in 1 hit at the heart of the Bed of Chaos. It would explain why she's punishing herself to atone for her hubris. Does that go any way towards making up for your disappointment with the Bed of Chaos fight and how pathetic it was that your expected confrontation with the Witch was reduced to that?

i dont think its the witch her self re incarnated, an old witch could have been her or her 7 ( i think 7) daughters, i persenally think thats its the only remaining un mutated witch that you find in the first game, maybey after you killed the bed of chaos she ventures to izalith and becomes consumed by chaos and realizes her mistake, thus feeling the need to lock her self up so that she will never unleash chaos like her mothers and sister accidently did

+Maknauj Pontiff's lore is better overall imo. He has a major difficulty spike for many players and his boss fight really improved people's ability at the game. After beating Pontiff, I learnt so much from the fight, improving my skill at the game. He ranked him 2 in his DS3 video but places him in 26 in all the Soulsbourne games. I think Dancer and Pontiff should both be at least top 20.
@dudeiii20698 жыл бұрын
why? pontiff is great but i think its a bit unfair JUST A BIT DONT GET PISSED because of the never ending combo and the phantom e can summon him just turn the boss from an impressive 1v1 boss fught to a ganking boss fight the heal chances are rare as fuck and on the second phase its just dodging and play very passive since you have to have alot of stamina to roll away from the never ending conbos by the phantom and pontiff himself

To answer your question why I dislike Pontiff (I love him more wise) is because im not good at parrying and when trying to dodge his combos I either have the camera messing me up or I get caught on something. That's just my opinion and I can always get better in fighting him but pontiff will always be the boss that almost made me quit the game.

This is by far my favourite ranking of all the ones you've done, and of all the ones available at that. They're well thought-out, eloquent, and generally fun to watch. I'm already subscribed, but have a thumbs up as well! As a slight sidenote, I'm actually one of those players whose first Dark Souls boss ever was... Iudex Gundyr! I died about 10 times, of course, before finally killing him. Now I have purchased every souls game and bloodborne, though I've only really had time to play Dark Souls 3 and (particularly) Demon's Souls so far. Your ranking videos have made me look forward to the other three! So while you certainly didn't get me hooked to Dark Souls 3 alone, your videos definitely helped me realize I wanted to play the entire series and experience the bosses for myself. "I can't even imagine what it would be like if this was the your first boss in the series" Well let me tell you, I beat him on my second try. The again, I'm a monster hunter veteran so I had the "roll at the last possible frame" thing down already. Gundyr's moves don't have too many lasting hotboxes so they were really easy to dodge through (Think Nargacuga for any other MH players reading), then when he transforms halfway through it was simply "Go to the side he starts the attack from and wail on him as he wiffs". First ever dark souls boss. I completely missed the hype for the first game and the second one looked boring. I finally caved and bought the third one because a few of my friends wouldn't shut up about it. Was worth. Funny enough, the most difficult boss for me was Vordt, super easy ass vordt. I died more times to him than any other boss barring Champion and Nameless King...somehow. His delayed moves threw me off a lot, All of Gundyr's attacks come out right after the windup but 3 or 4 of vordts windups look the same for very different attack timings. Of course on NG+ he was a joke now that I'm in the dark souls zone but...

Kalameet is a pretty great boss, and definitely one of my faves in Dark Souls, but god damn he is painfully difficult. In my opinion, he is the hardest boss in that game, followed closely by Manus and Artorias. But still, a great design and very memorable fight.

Pontiff Sulyvahn #26?! Pontiff was a fight that combined you having to make great choices of when to attack, to heal and even when to hit because one hit could cause your life. That's rare in souls borne. Plus the satisfaction of parrying him is nice. Not to mention this is a boss that a really made you think hard about wether or not to attack, that's rare in soulsborne. Maybe it's just me but I love pontiff

+Christian Bryan I thought Martyr was definately a better boss than Pontiff, but Pontiff has better lore and it's much more fun with friends to beat his evil ass. I actually never fought him without phantoms before and on my newest character I went in solo for the first time and beat him first try. Unlike Logarius it isn't required to learn his parry timing to beat him.
@D1ab0lical8 жыл бұрын
+Christian Bryan Not that I could ever parry Pontiff, I always whiff the parry on the initial running forward strike. Parrying windows are pretty small in this game.

tbh the cast that is left from DS1 just tops the 4 other games together, the only bosses worth mentioning are Allant, Raime, Gehrmann, Maria and the Soul of Cinder. And that would conclude my Top10

alright. my predictions for the top 10 have gotta be as follows, in no particular order. Champiom Gundyr (Maybe Im Biased as he is my favorite boss) Lorian and Lothric Gwyn Soul of Cinder Artorias Nameless King Orphan of Kos Gherman Ivory King Ivory King is the best fight in Dark Souls 2 by far rivaled only by Sir Alonne. Ivory King did everything right. Thr arena was a total 180 from the rest of the DLC, having the knights of Elyum Eoyce fight along side you and sacrifice themselfs is sooo bad ass and the Ivory King coming into the arena from the portal made the fight so damn good. The Lore was stellar af too and honestlt the fight had NO drawbacks whatsoever.

@MOOEY_DRAWS8 жыл бұрын
Youmu Konpaku i disagree. Its an awful final boss that has good lore. The parry mechanic makes it way easier, and even without it, you can kite gwyn around the objects in the boss room. In fact, Soul of Cider's second phase is literally gwyn without those things, which makes Lord of cinder a good boss because it's Gwyn without gwyn being gwyn-able lol.

I think his top 5 will be 5 Manus 4 Nameless King 3 Gehrman 2 Maria 1 Orphan
@PrettyDamnDandy8 жыл бұрын
+supermysticsonic2 that's mostly due to the lore though. Gerhman is a much better fight but hard to really care for as there's only one bloodborne. The soul of cinder on the other hand is a monument to everyone's sins and has such meaningful lore behind it. Let's be real you felt your heart drop once phase 2 kicked in
@CrazeeAdam8 жыл бұрын
the problem is, the Nameless King takes things from those fights and does a lot better. He'll be above O&S for sure, as his "gank" could be said to be done even better, his lore is a lot more rich, his difficulty is probably some of the highest in the series, design is very cool. The only one of those i see being above him is Artorias.

One of the things that makes the Kalameet fight so awesome imo is the fact that you're fighting an actual dragon and not a wyvern or a drake. And as we all know, it took several gods to fight the dragons in that war. So killing a dragon with a little bit of help from Gough make this fight so damn awesome.

13:30 Black Dragon Kalameet has incredible lore. He was an ancient dragon who was known for being nearly impossible to kill. After the war with the dragons, he was corrupted by the abyss. They turned him into what you see when you fight him. Interestingly, Gough actually wants you to kill him not because he hates dragons, but because he wants you to put Kalameet out of his misery. So in a way the fight is a mercy killing.

As someone who got into these games with DS3 I cannot stress enough how much I love and appreciate Gundyr. He is the perfect boss for a new player, with a short run up, enough time in between strikes to heal or calm your nerves (as you will be at the edge of your seat if this is your first ever boss) and easy to grasp attack patterns that teach you blocking, dodging and staying on the move at the same time. He also has two very different phases, which helps as well as this introduces you to both humanoid and more abstract bosses. He is great for a first time player and one of my favourite bosses so far because of it (haven't beaten 3 yet though).
@griffinbenedict30254 жыл бұрын
The Old Monk, Pontiff, and Kalameet commentary, makes me wonder how this list would be changed if the DS3 DLC were to be included. EDIT: Added Pontiff and Kalameet
@mikeyisbombable3 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: Pontiff was originally supposed to be the final boss for ds3 so the game was supposed to be much shorter. Since he was the final boss at the time, he was supposed to be fought in Kiln of the First Flame. Also, Pontiff had a different name during production of ds3 called “Old King of the Eclipse”. So technically, Ds3/events wouldn’t have happened without Pontiff himself.

I hope you get well soon.. also, I am happy to see some non DLC DS2 bosses made it a bit high.. i don't think all DS2 bosses are terrible and I certainly love the ones you included here, they are very memorable and good fights.. and btw, the Smelter Demon actually absorbs the fire that are in the two torches around the room when phase 2 kicks in.... you will notice how the room goes darker.. so the fire mechanic makes sense.. since you know.. Smelter Demon.. he drains the fire.. creates a forge within him and Smelts his weapon ;)

Something that might have been mentioned before but that I always appreciated was the world 2 in demon's souls had all the best upgrade gear for physical damage builds, but everything had high physical resistance and low magic resistance, meanwhile for the enemies in world 3 the reverse is true. I always liked the cleverness behind making each stage more difficult for the type of build it benefits.
