Ranking the Variants for Dune

3 expansions bring 6 variants- Which ones are used most and which are most complex?

I think if I had to rank the variants, Homeworlds would always end up at the top. Since the last expansion came out, I don’t remember a game of dune where we haven’t used Homeworlds, even with new players because they empower all of the factions so much new players barely even realize they are a variant!

The main irk with stronghold cards and leader skill cards is that often there’s enough going on that we’re not thinking about such passives. It’s so easy to slip your mind that you have that - maybe we just need more time for every other mechanic to become second nature

Here are some ideas I would like to see for future Dune expansions Kanly: War of Assassins - A replacement for Duel but that is not a pre-game but can be integrated into the game, something that adds terror and other rules for all players The Landsraad - A sub-game focused on politics that that allows players to try and win by influencing the other minor houses, with benefits for wooing minor houses, like an extra treachery card The Spice Must Flow - A collection of various optional rules and cards that enhance the game, like double spice blow cards, faction leaders, alternative victory conditions

Great choices, I think I’d put leader skills at the bottom and only because of the group I play with. Some of them are nuanced and not obvious on the best way to way advantage of them and some are very straightforward. Nexus absolutely #1 for me and to keep it simple you can even just stick to the base 6 if that’s what you’re playing to keep tension high and not add any extra layer of confusion by having the expansion factions in there.

Hi Jack, thanks for the videos as usual. Since we're talking about Stronghold Cards, here's some fun edge cases: - Ecaz + ally co-occupy in a Stronghold - Mentat Pause comes around - Which player takes control of the Stronghold card? Additionally: - Ecaz + Ally are co-occupying in a Stronghold. Either both or one of them control the Stronghold card - Ecaz alliance breaks apart due to EomE (Moritani) or Nexus phase - Neither Ecaz nor their former ally leave the Stronghold in Shipping and Movement - Who gets the benefit of the Stronghold card for the upcoming Combat phase fight between Ecaz and their former ally?

Yeah, I wasn't sure when it referred to 'you control the stronghold' whether the you was singular (only Ecaz) or plural (Ecaz + ally together, as both are considered one faction). Thank you @@jackredathewarp

We tried to play a game with new folks with all expansions 😂, but it did turn out okay, because they selected more simple faction like Emperor, Fremen, Guild, and we took the more complex ones. It turned out ok. One more experienced player won together with the new player. So I think these expansions are very well made in terms of how easy it is to explain. Of course, I might need to mention that the new players haven't played Dune, otherwise they are pretty hardcore boargamers.

Multple Stronghold cards are good idea, maybe let controlled of Stronghold choose which one to use for next turn, can be change each turn. Please add Jacurutu Sietch Discovery Token Stronghold card. 2 more Tech Token could be nice addition.

Nexus cards are #1, we always play them. Tech tokens can be fun, most of people I've played with either like or don't mind them in the game. The rest (leader skills, strongholds and homeworlds) looks like a fan mod to us and only makes Dune more complex for the sake of complexity. Ah, and we play all of treachery cards, exept for poison blade, snooper shield, and the second copy of poison tooth and artillery strike from choam&richese.

Hi, Jack! Great video) I gotta question on extra treachery cards, Chemistry and Weirding Way to be precise. WW is a weapon at first and defense if played with another weapon. Chemistry is vice versa. Yet can I play both of them together in one battle, but Chemistry as a weapon and WW as defense? Thanks!

You cannot because of their default states. WW is a weapon, so Chemistry wouldn’t change to a weapon since WW would need to be a defense in its default state.

Smooth Game Progress: Someone(Emperor) could handle Stronghold cards managment. Nexus cards could be distributed even with Emperor too.

If the tlelaxu can revive to their high threshold in a round, do they get payments for free revivals if they started the round in low threshold?

The homeworld card specifies that if they start revival at low threshold, they do not collect.

You, and some other experienced played probably know very we ll all those variants and they probably are not complex to you anymore. What reasons would you have to not play with all of them in one game if you are with pro players? Is it still too much, do you sometimes want a lighter game? Thx!
