Store owners pretty much have to follow market price rather than MSRP. If market price is higher, they risk a handful of customers buying everything up and re-selling to profit the difference. If market price is lower, they risk losing sales to other stores and getting a bad reputation. I don't envy you guys having to guess which way the winds will blow with every set!
@verybamboo9 күн бұрын
"If market price is higher, they risk a handful of customers buying everything up and re-selling to profit the difference.". This is not a risk. If they sold at MSRP after getting distributor prices, the shop owners are still making a profit. What the customers who buy it do afterwards doesn't involve the store owners anymore. It's not like if the store owners sold at MSRP, they'd lose money... they just lose the chance at even MORE money. It's disingenuous to frame it that way. The scalping in the hobby gets worse and worse. I think stores that sell out their stock at MSRP and don't get as much profit as the ones that price gouge have more integrity, but you can't cash out integrity so...
@expsharevideogames9 күн бұрын
@@verybamboo Distro prices also go up so no not necessarily. For example, distros are charging around $161 for a booster display of Surging sparks currently. MSRP was originally $165. If a shop was buying at $161 and selling at $165 they would be losing money after credit card processing fees. Either way I would personally much prefer the LGS made the money off of marking the product up to market price than a random scalper. The LGS serves a crucial roll in nurturing the local community as well as paying their employee wages. The random scalper benefits pretty much no one but themselves
@MTGUnpacked9 күн бұрын
@@verybambooThis has actually happened with stores near me. Scalpers came in and bought their entire stock at MSRP, leaving nothing for anyone else. They have since solved the problem with quantity limits and market pricing. If you're a regular, they still give you MSRP. Crazy that you'd rather see a random scalper profit than a store owner who sets up events and provides play space for their local community.
@Bananasforthesoul9 күн бұрын
@@verybambooif they price at MSRP, they should put a limit on the product. If they have no limit and one person buys everything for a hot set right on release, it creates a bad customer perception. People want product available to them if they’re gonna wait for it. After release if you can’t get a product from distributor to replace and stock your shelves, raise the price so your shelves look stocked and people can pick a few packs.
@verybamboo6 күн бұрын
@@Bananasforthesoul Here is my honest take for this. It's probably not a popular take and maybe even impossible to put into practice but all it takes is for people to stop buying from scalpers to solve this. I don't think it's the responsibility of card shops to stop scalpers. It would be great if they did put limits but it's so easy to work around these limits. Most card shops aren't equipped with the know how on how to stop people from buying everything up. You could buy a bunch up, send a friend in to buy more, a family member or just go home and change your clothes. The way to stop scalping really falls on everyone else. You can't stop scalping as a business practice because people keep buying from the scalpers. People FOMO so hard every release, it's like clockwork. If scalpers buy up a bunch of product and hike the prices up, simply don't buy it. If the scalpers need liquidity, they're going to have to bring the prices back down in order for people to be willing to buy. As consumers, we can force them to sit on dead product or be willing to lower prices. Sadly, everyone is so scared they're going to miss out on the new shiny thing and these scalpers always make a killing. It's such an easy way to make fistfuls of money from people, of course there are going to be scalpers.

People are buying $80 Prismatic Evolutions ETBs and $200 Surging Sparks booster boxes. I would think the prices would deter them from making a purchase, but apparently not. Then people are also buying pre-orders of pre-orders at 2-3x MSRP from resellers. I don't even want to take sides with the consumers. Then it gets even more dumb because some of them will ask for investment advice on whether to open, sell, or wait after paying that absurd price. Like, jeez.

I agree. People only bring up MSRP when the Market price is higher. No one complains when a store sells a $50 MSRP ETB for $32-$35 because that’s what the market price is. I understand the frustration. Prismatic looks like a good set, and I am sure it will be fun to open, so everyone is buying up what they can if they find a decent price. I got some orders in at MSRP before the market went crazy and everyone started charging over MSRP. If I had seen this coming I would have ordered more, but I was waiting for stores I had some store credit with to drop orders before I did so. I also see your point about lower allocations due to every store wanting product because of how hot it is. There are deals out there, people just don’t like them.

Bottom line if stores sold etbs for $50 the resellers would just list the same product for $100 or whatever market price is anyways so the stores should just sell for market. If it’s priced too high for what the market will pay then it should sit on the shelf and eventually lower the price.

@9plustcg9 күн бұрын
The thing is that as long as Pokemon is seen as an investment by a large portion of consumers the market is going to fluctuate. If all distributor backed retailers were capped on what they could sell for, all that would happen is the product would get bought up and resold on the secondary market. Those secondary retailers will eat up all that profit leaving the first out in the cold. Pokemon would have to print everything into oblivion to stem the flow of demand enough to kill the secondary market. Why would they do that? Pokemon is in it for the long game and the long game is the hype that keeps cards relevant for years after release that hype comes from a healthy amount of scarcity feeding demand. This is all a result of the market treating these products as a money making endeavor and retail has to respond accordingly. We can't have it both ways, the product can't be valuable and increase in price while also being incredibly affordable and easy to acquire. Consumers need to make the decision if the juice is worth the squeeze and right now we think it is.

I can answer that question easily, of when to charge more than msrp. Its exactly the point when it costs you more to get the product than your markup will allow. If you run your business with a 20% markup. And the normal msrp of the product is 100 dollars then the moment the cost to the buss owner hits 81.00 than its time to raise msrp. This obviously is different for each owner because of loyalty to customer. But as a previous brick and mortar owner. This is a norm unless your Walmart and get HUGE discounts on all you orders cause they gouge distributors just to get there products into there store.

Okay I agree with the video and to fix the issue of bots I think the following should be done. 1. Only allow vendors to sell to LGS's. That would increase supply to an LGS cause let's face it, big box stores take up a big portion of the market and contribute to scalping. (E.g. Black Friday Deals) while it is not full proof I think prices would be more stable that way as you really just have to go to an LGS for product. 2. Pokemon Center should discontinue exclusive items or mark them as not to be resold. That way collectors and players benefit cutting out scalpers. Sucks to have to pay $400+ for an item that isn't out yet and originally costs $60.

It’s concerning to see stores consistently charging more than MSRP on sets like Prismatic Evolutions and what we can expect from future releases in 2025. While I understand the challenges stores face-rising operational costs, employee wages, and the need to remain competitive-the practice of inflating prices can alienate the very community that sustains them. Instead of leaning on inflated pricing, I propose a sustainable solution: introducing monthly membership programs. These memberships could offer exclusive perks, such as access to new releases at MSRP or even discounted rates. This model would create a steady stream of recurring income, helping stores cover overhead, support employees, and build stronger loyalty with their customers.

Since that doesn't exist, I'd argue that for: - Small companies e.g. LGS/sole traders and the like: It makes more sense that they would be charging more straight away due to the greater risk they take - Large companies e.g. Wallmart/K-mart/etc: They should not charge over MSRP until the next set is released. Even with re-prints, I'd still be fine with it simply due to the new set being the MSRP

If you think that is unethical, don't buy the toothpick from me. The Pokemon Company could always print more, so everything is worthless once you buy it from the store, but they don't. People don't understand that selling something less "sexy" but with higher supply and steady sales makes more money in a long run than selling something exotic, with very limited supply, even if the price is higher.

i do think stores should be limiting to 2 per customer and its the easiest solution and more cost effective to this "botting" problem

I think the market itself is the “omnipitent” being. We vote with our dollars so… using numbers and data is really the only facts we have to base this off of.

Seems like people forgot about forging and fire gaming had ton of controversial also when they were holding one piece and cancel ton of orders. They magically got ton of restock after the one piece restock announcements. They always get away with it too because they try to undercut the market with other products so they do have some good deals lol.

only the individual scalpers are complaining about the price increases, their profit margins are getting thinner.

Not much we can do but bots are in the space When a monitor goes off and it’s sold out over 100+ stock of prismatic within 2 seconds, has to be bots but if we can’t beat them we shall join them

For me, I feel retailers should sell at msrp if they are receiving the product from the manufacturer. If they are sourcing an old set from somewhere else, then they can sell if for market price. I get selling a little over msrp, however gauging the price to double or triple seems a bit whack. If a retailer wants to attract long standing re-peat business customers, then gouging them for one random set doesent seem to make sense. For me i like finding retailers and sticking with them and supporting them even if the price is a tad higher as I know they need to make money..

Charging the current market price of something is not price gouging.
@gbj65819 күн бұрын
@@gyroninjamodder Maybe.. But then, what is the 'market price'? Is it that scalpers are selling stuff on facebook market place for 3 times msrp and so that then becomes the market price?? These products are from the manufacturer, whos is actually setting the market price for an even the consumers.

I will tell you customers are much less forgiving if you run a brick and mortar store and are out of stock this close to release period than they are if you are selling from an online storefront. If they see you are out of stock of a product and then find it at another store, even if it is marked up a little, they are very likely going to make that other store their default first stop from then on out

The whole Pokemon game revolves around flipping, quick sales and quick profits.....im not sure what the moral argument is that makes those at the top of the chain wrong for playing the exact same games.

People will always complain. To them, the time to charge msrp is when the market price is over msrp. Basic economics reign- its about supply and demand. I recommend those people go to another store that's cheaper instead of complaining.
@PokeJay_9 күн бұрын
The people complaining about stores charging over MSRP are generally the same people that will try and flip the product down the line for 2x. Having friends that run online stores the margins are paper thin, no one cared when they were struggling making £4-6 on a booster box early- mid S&V. Supply and demand baby! If you want it buy it at the price your store has it at otherwise move on.

P Evolution will be the first set in 3 years that I will not be ordering. I refuse to pay double or three times the amount for the same product as I got before simply due to hype and demand. Everything goes down eventually.
