Funny story: Tool refused to license their songs for digital platforms like Spotify and Pandora. Weeks before the release of Fear Inoculum they dropped their entire catalog on those apps, and they filled up the top 10 digital downloads for a while there. Taylor Swift fans were shook!

Tool was on Pandora for a long time. It's how I found out about Rosetta Stoned. For months when the song came up, it would get cut off at the same spot. I presume because it was so long. Eventually they started playing the entire song. Googling it, it looks like they were pulled in April of 2018 and was back a little over a year later.

I was on a boat fishing in Alaska when that happened. It rocked SeriusXM radio. I was so fucking stoked my skipper was disturbed. It was such a wonderful move by Tool. And honestly, after supporting them for... over twenty years, having them give me their music free on my phone was just a giant plus.

More than anything it has a lot o say about the modern relationship with the television, about the state of our entertainment, news cycles, and human nature, specifically our natural proclivity to get off on the suffering of others... especially when they are some nameless, faceless “other”... that’s pretty much exactly what the song is about.

Yeh man, "Bottom" is straight fuckin fire of a track. Blame the music industry for cherry picking what goes on the airwaves. There is not a single bad TOOL song. Not one. Been listening to them since they were known and I still have "TOOL TIME" music blasts, have every album they ever made and play the livin Hell out of all them. No other band has ever been on their level, bar none. Lost count of how many times I've heard "Bottom", and still click to appreciate new listeners reactions of excellence in craft.

Undertow tends ro receive accolades for the hits more than anything else. Gems like this end up back in the mine to be dug up and rediscovered by Tool miners later. The song is the very definition of the way that an entire generation felt at the beginning of the 90's. We were at the bottom (like now) and having to figure out how to climb out. I think what is meant by "underrated" is that compared to their bigger hits--Stinkfist, Sober, Aenima, 46&2, Schism, Parabola/Parabol, The Pot, Vicarious--the songs that Tool is known for in the wider market, it is very easy to overlook a song like Bottom, but it's one of the best on Undertow and one of their best overall. There are other songs like that in their catalogue, like Jimmy, H, the Patient, Jambi, Disposition-Reflection-Triad, Third Eye (both versions), You Lied, etc. Look at their new album. Fear Innoculum was the release, 7empest got the Grammy, but I think Pneuma was the best track. These are gems that only people who take the time to listen to their whole album understand.

Beastie Boys, Guns and Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Public Enemy, Candlebox, etc. It was crazy back then. Also, we were still down with the classic shit, like Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Pink Floyd. It's one of the things I love most about this band. Each album and era truly captured something unique and special. It makes comparing albums a redundant task for myself at least. They certainly grow in maturity over the years as song writers, but the pure energy of this album (combined with technique and quite frankly, a complexity any other band would be grateful to achieve just once in their entire careers) - makes Undertow equally timeless. I liken their albums more to novels than anything else. (Book of Tool, aye?). Each is simply a different story and depending how you feel, you might be keen to experience one over another. Great reaction as always, lads. This has always been special one for me.

I think this song gets overlooked just because it's so old and they created so many great songs/albums since then. So not so much overlooked, just buried in all the greatness.

@@glsinsight Both. There's live videos on KZbin (in 1995) of Tool doing early versions of Aenima songs with Paul playing bass. I've heard 46&2 is from a riff by Justin.

There’s no underrated TOOL songs... just lesser known songs by the masses and the casual listeners who only know schism, Ænema, Sober, and the other radio hits... if you’re a real TOOL fan, you know every TOOL song like the back of your hand, and you live every damn second of every damn song... and I’m not exaggerating one bit... real TOOL fans listen to a TOOL album front to back, and literally loves every song. That’s why it’s impossible for a TOOL fan to pick a favorite song or a favorite album, and why if the even do have an answer, that answer might change on a whim. Because every fucking song is fire🔥 . And every fucking TOOL fan knows that.

I discovered this band in 1995, and this album in 1997. I'm glad you fellas have found it, better late than never! I'm really not surprised hip hop fans with open minds are digging Tool, they an amazingly talented band with amazing, complex songs that have layers inside layers of music & hidden gems that may take you listening to the song 100X's before you hear it! Ita 2022 and I just heard some background noises on Aenima that took me 25 years to hear! And I used to play Opiate, Undertow, Aenima & Lateralus on repeat at my tattoo shop on a very high quality high definition stereo.

I used to go for a hard walk singing with maynard. When you hit the screamed notes with him, there is power you've never known. After, respect for what it takes to achieve it. Today, the rap devotees of the southside chicago get to hear it, and the looks do i get.

I for one know every Tool, A Perfect Circle, & Puscifer song. TOOL ARMY STRONG! All the lyrics are engraved into my brain. Love this one featuring Henry Rollin's. His movies to name a few. That are worth a watch. He never Died, American Hardcore, The Feast, The new Guy, Heat, Johnny Mnemonic, Wrong Turn Dead End, Bad Boys 2 and my favorite vampire Rock movie "Suck" featuring some great musicians including the great Henry Rollins. You guys make Tool Tuesday's the best day. 🤘🎶🤘

Henry Rollins was the singer for the hardcore punk band, Black Flag. When they broke up in the late 80s, Henry then started The Rollins Band... who on their first tour had Tool open for them. Rollins had been a huge impact and inspiration for Maynard in the early years.
