Great video and great car choice. Back in the day I was maybe 12 years old a neighbor had just bought a brand new Ford. I remember it being something of a big deal because of the radical change from 1959. My father among 3 or 4 other neighbors where talking up a storm with the owner, going over the entire car detail by detail. That moment stuck with me for the following years. Then one day (I was maybe 15 years old and of course cars were an important topic) we came across a 1960 Edsel (I think it was a 4 door sedan but I'm no longer sure). It was parked at a large mall and we spotted a 1960 Ford from the front but that grill was way off mark ! On closer inspection it was at the back that we saw Edsel and those very different tail lights. Wow, we didn't know Edsel had a 1960 model. I remember seeing a 58 or 59 Edsel once (Canada) but that's it and now, Wow, a 1960 Edsel !

Buttercup is an awesome car it has the best of both worlds with a drop top in the air conditioner which in itself is a work of art just looking at it and I've noticed with these both on units this very little confusion under the hood it's still nice and simple under there with two hoses going into the unit and all the work is done inside the machine itself oh, and also if I remember those filters inside are changeable so you always have fresh air. The 1960 Edsel Ranger Convertible is a top quality unique car. Even the 4 Matic transmission name was later stolen by Mercedes Benz to name brand one of its 21st century SUV'S. Authors of marketing textbooks should be ashamed of labeling Edsel brand a fiasco. Edsel produced some of the modern and best classic cars ever made. Thanks for your valuable videos.

Just discovered this video today even though it's from 5 years ago. I was surprised because you look the same as in your new videos which isn't easy since you're outside a lot. Anyway Buzz has an incredible '60 Edsel. I'm glad the circumstances for him to get it all came together at the right time, including the money, of course. The reason so few '60 Edsel's were sold for the '60 model year is that Ford shut it down in November 1959; barely into the '60 model year for any new cars, period. Frankly it's a wonder the '60 was produced at all. The '59 model itself was more Ford-like, and the '60 even more so. Still they did quite a bit to distinguish it from the '60 Galaxie inside and out, and you can tell it's more 'upmarket' which wasn't easy because the Galaxie was quite nice, indeed. The time, care and photography techniques you use are among the best here. I (as the viewer) feel like I'm there too for the whole fun experience. All your videos are well paced, and everything gets covered with no short-changing. So the Edsel made it into the '60 model year, but it was really a technicality. I think the Edsel could have been a success had it been the car we would later know to be the Mercury Comet, and not just another version of an existing line of cars. The '58 & '59 Edsel's were unnecessary. Ford & Mercury had everything covered. It was Ford's ego in wanting to match GM division for division. A car looking for a market. The Comet and Falcon had a market looking for them; not to mention Mustang several years later.

I worked on one of these in high school shop. Theirs wasn’t a convertible and I believe it was the high end or mid range class Edsel. You could tell it was a nightmare from day one with the current technology of the day.. the push button shifter was neat but was always plagued with problems. Relays and failures (even intermittent) and chattering plus the shifting having to go from reverse to neutral then park and the park being weak needing the parking brakes help. If I recall the push buttons were in a circle on the steering wheel on the one we worked on. I can’t remember seeing this again This is a beautiful car though a lucky man.I myself love the Chrysler 300 s of the day and of course the Continental. It’s a shame our country slowly eliminating competition. Competition made for good pay for the workers and a great variety of cars . The golden age of design in the automotive era in my opinion. I would think these would be destined to go up in value in the coming years. Thank you for sharing. Love your channel.

@richardrice80763 жыл бұрын
Maybe. There were other things that killed the Edsel, a recession in1958, terrible quality, no dealer network( they were Edsels not Fords). Also they were to be a bridge car, between a Ford and a Mercury. Instead the cheapest Edsel was the same price as the most expensive Ford and the most expensive Edsel cost as much as the cheapest Mercury. In the end it was just a train wreck. I love these cars.

Your legacy is intact. I never knew these existed. This was a definite improvement over previous years. I thought the 60 models were more of the same. This was really a surprise. About the boot, the boot on my Falcon was tight also. I noticed that temperature had a big affect on them. It was easier to snap when it was sitting in a warm sun than on a cooler 70ish summer day. I think they made them tight by design so they wouldn't flap in the wind. This car could stand an improvement in the design of the tail lights and maybe the Edsel would have survived a longer run.

That is a really cool car it's very interesting the way the back end looks. And knowing what the 1960 Ford back end was like you can see the filler along the back where they put up a plaque going across the entire back where the taillights would be on the Ford and then they put those rocketship lithose rocketship lights on in place which are so radical. Is a great video

A nice video of a very rare and interesting automobile. As we all know, the car is essentially a 1960 Ford Sunliner. In Edsel speak the two speed Ford automatic was promoted as MILE-O-Matic. If you look at your video notice on the base of the radio it says F-O-R-D which was apparently the case in all 1960 edsels

Good video. "Unbelievable" I built a plastic model of a 1960 Edsel in 1960.....gone now. My dad had a 1960 Ford as a company car and both the Ford and Edsel had new lower and smoother profiles than the 59 models. The view over the hood was completely different from the 59 version. They were very in tune with "jet age" or "rocket age" styling. The fins were shrinking and became horizontal in 60 (like the Chevy, but less pronounced). The 1960 Edsel tail lights are unique but do look "tacked on" and not as integrated as the Ford. Also interesting that the fins on the Edsel are less horizontal and a bit smaller that the Ford. The 1961 Ford saw the fins shrink even more and in 1962 fins were gone completely. The 1960 Edsel grill was definitely copied from the 1959 Pontiac and gone was the push button transmission control. Thanks to the owner for putting the top down and taking you for a spin. The 1960 Edsel Villager nine passenger station wagon is even more rare than the convertible. The wagon's fins are the same as the Ford (horizontal) and the vertical taillight housings are chrome plated. If you get to an Edsel convention please make an "unbelievable" video of an Edsel Villager. Thanks for adding to the wonderful world of KZbin automotive history.

Built in Edsel's hometown, Louisville, KY. Owning 3 out of only 76 is a devoted fan. Nice color combo. Some have been built to duplicate what the proposed 60 might have been with a strong vertical center bumper, and I think some fake one's built from the 60 Ford, which is nearly identical.

Fascinating car, with a nice colour combination, and nicely restored. Doesn’t appear to have power brakes however, and that is unfortunate. Can you imagine how tiring constant braking would be on your foot? That particular feature would be more important to me than the A/C. After all, with a convertible, if you put the top down, you’ll have all the cool air conditioning that you could possibly need! By the way Lou, my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba is home to several classic cars, and they’re often displayed at a variety of show and shines. How about paying us a visit?

I used to know a man with an Edsel dealership sign in his front yard. His widow sold it after he passed away, though. At one point he had as many as 36 Edsels.

My wife’s uncle had about five Edsels including one of these. It was a barn find in fantastic condition, and he found it about 20 miles from his house. His name was Bernard Gentz, and he was once President of the Edsel Club. Bernie past away a few years ago, and I have no idea of what happened to his 60 Edsel, or any of his cars. At the time he owned his 60 he said there were 76 made and 53 known to exist.

A blue 1960 four door Edsel sedan was always parked on the street my grandmother lived on in the 1960s. However, I didn't realize that it was an Edsel. I thought it was some sort of customized Ford Fairlane or Galaxie. The car didn't arouse my curiosity much because the owner never washed it or otherwise took care of it. Only after the car was no longer parked on that street did I find out that it was an Edsel. If only I would have been more curious, I would have bought it.

J Johnson: Are you from O'Fallon Illinois? I remember a blue sedan that I always thought was a Ford but later learned it was a 60 Edsel. It had the fender ornaments. I grew up in O'Fallon Illinois in the 60s.

The 292 was greatly detuned by 1960. It was a shadow of the engine it was in 1955-1957. I had a 292 in a Mercury and it had barely enough power to get out of its own stink. I suppose Ford detuned the Y-Block engines to make the FE 352 seem more of an upgrade that it would have been if they kept the 312 at 245hp. It went from 212hp in 1957 to 180hp by 1960. That did not seem like much of a difference until you drive them to compare.

Funny how this 3rd year model looks more like a Pontiac than an Edsel. Someone in the club actually restored his hardtop to look like Ford's prototype, which had a huge, single bumper guard in the center, and looked great! 👍

They lost the horse collar grille in the final year, making the front look more like a Ford. But Edsel always had unusual looking tail lights and this was no exception. A shame that the car bearing Henry's son's name died early just like him.
