Original owner of 1987 GN bought November1987, 31,000 miles, T-Roofs, some performance bolt ons, 1 paint respray in 2018, only reason i bought the GN I had bought a new 1987 IROC in March of 1987. Last week of September 1987 I got T-Boned by a lady blowing thru a stop sign, after I got my insurance check I wanted the GN but GM was making new front wheel drive versions, First week of November a Buick dealer in Newark NJ had 4 left over Turbo's, 2 T-Types one white the other silver and 1 black T-Type and 1 GN , I bought the GN and been happy ever since !! Not afraid to go Stop light against the new Dodges and Mustangs !! Go Buick!!

I worked at GM and ordered my 1986 GN in late 85 before anyone knew what it was, including myself. I "settled" on the Buick because they no longer made the Hurst Olds. Whew, I'm so glad I did. A lot of my co-workers got the IROC. When I traced them, they couldn't believe how much I smoked them. The best story though was when I set up a race with a guy who was absolutely convinced that "there is no way a V6 can beat my V8". We wagered a keg of beer. After every race that I beat him he was sure I souped it up. He looked under the hood and couldn't believe it. Of course he never paid that debt and I never saw him on the streets again. Sold her in 91 and I sure do miss her. Btw, with my GM discount I got the car for about $13,500.

I graduated in 88 in Northern Virginia. I drove a 66 Volkswagen Bug with a 1641 engine which may have hit 60 horsepower when installed. Some of my friends who were handed things like a Porsche 924 or a Buick Regal T-Type wrecked them but boy was that T-Type fun trolling yuppies when we left at lunch. He flipped it doing a UTurn in a Safeway parking lot by forgetting the exit had been moved and hitting the curb, one of the posts that anchored a small tree, the tree and ended up sliding upside down into the curb across four lanes plus the turning lane on Chainbridge Road. It also had T-Tops which obviously shattered causing some road rash on top of his head. Mommy and daddy did not buy him another. I wanted the drivetrain for a Karman Ghia project that was already tubbed and had a one piece front end with a Mustang 2 front subframe with suspension. Shortened the 9 inch myself with help from my auto body instructor at the second high school I attended after lunch. That would have been a sleeper from Hell. Edit: The FBI did in fact own 6, that I know of, Buick Grand Nationals. I drove as a courier for a while out of Reston Virginia and the J Edgar Hoover building was a destination I volunteered for because of a receptionist that used to scratch her head hinting that maybe I should lower my sunglasses as I may have smoked my lunch that day but sometimes I had to deliver directly to the loading dock parking area underneath the building where the Buicks were kept. I asked random people there a few times and they’d just laugh. “What do you think?” Maybe they were seized but they were there and drove them. Wouldn’t you? I sure would. Peace

I worked for a Buick dealer in Fremont Cali in the 86 and 87,,,I did Pre delivery inspection on two GNX and have the build sheet for one . Our customers would go to Fremont racetrack and race their stock Grand Nationals . We had a very rare firebird turbo V6 pace car as well. It had huge sway bars and very good weight balance front to rear. Even the regular t types were quick . 500 GNX with a ladder bar for traction, Stuart Warner gauges . This engine would be a nice setup in a light car like a nova , Camaro, bird, corvette or a boat. After a customer with a GN , who got beat a lot at the drag strip came in complaining about LACK OF POWER two or three times on the repair ticket, my foreman smoked the tires ALL OF THE WAY around the service area and into his stall beside mine . The smoke was still coming out of the wheel wells , my boss came screaming out of his office saying who the hell was driving that effing car !! Meanwhile my foreman was back at the tower signing off on the job,,,,lack of power,,,no problem found ,,see parking lot ! Best place I ever worked ,,,Hey Gene West !

The intercooled Buick Grand National for sure is a rare car especially for 1986. But no one ever seems to mention the Regal T- Type for 1986 the Regal Turbo ,Regal Limited and the Regal Turbo T. Love that hypothetical with the new 1987 Z28 owner. Lol. By 87, EVERY muscle and sports car buyer KNEW, or had at least heard of- what GNs were, and what they were capable of. There was no “pulling away” after a few seconds. They left everybody in a factory Ford/Chevy/Pontiac… well, everybody but the F40 and 959, in the dust from the traffic light. The GNX did it even dirtier. The only factory GM vehicles, in the near future, that could run with the 86-87 GN/87 GNX, was the upcoming Turbo Trans Am (with the near identical GNX engine), C4 ZR-1, and very limited, but very awesome- 1992 Firebird SLP Firehawk.

Nice work, well researched unlike some others. Had four different Turbo Regals from 88-95. Settled on a white 87 Turbo T package with mild mods -- bigger turbo and 60lb injectors, custom chip. The HP number was fudged by GM supposedly to keep insurance costs down. The 86-87 intercooled models were dynoed at close to 300 mostly bone stock so the GNX had to be much more than was stated by GM. $150k for a nice low miles model X now, they're in collections and owned by speculators unfortunately.

The salesman came out to talk to me and unfortunately didn't know much about it, but saw my obvious enthusiasm for Buicks and proceeded to try and sell me a new LeSabre. I laughed inside when he tried to tell me how they were faster than mine, etc, etc. It wasn't until recently out of curiosity and looking it up on the internet, the 87 LeSabre was actually a good 1.5 secs slower than mine 0-60 and certainly not near as beautiful. What about the rumor of the FBI purchasing a bunch of them? How did the boost management work in the Buick? Maybe you could do a part 2 explaining some engine functionality. Thanks.
@bvwardАй бұрын
I heard the FBI had those motors in 4 door cars... Never could confirm it.
@spooleyАй бұрын
They existed, in a Tonight show interview with Leno Dan Aykroyd talked about getting walked by one in his muscle car of the day. They raced on a turnpike IIRC and Dan was amazed the Buick T-type was matching his speed and how skilled the driver was. Pretty soon the blue light in the dash flashed and off went some random law enforcement not knowing who he had been racing with. The clip is from when Aykroyd was promoting the movie Dragnet so I'm guessing late 1980s. Pops up once in a while on youtube.

Myth

@gregmccutcheon659 4 door is myth, law enforcement using turbo Regal isn’t. There is video from the 1992 GS Nats in Bowling Green with a few on display
@gregmccutcheon659Ай бұрын
@ This video is about the GNX. No GNX’s went to law enforcement. A few turbo t’s ended up in a few agencies.

I was in the Mustang side of that battle. We called the GNs black hairdryers back then. lol p.s. The GNs did not handle turns very well. I was there.
@gregmccutcheon659Ай бұрын
😂 The mustangs didn’t handle much better and the Turbo Buicks outran them so easily, it didn’t matter.
@JT-sl3uiАй бұрын
@@gregmccutcheon659yeah this is one of those completely pointless comments. All the losers to the mighty GN would throw out hairdryer, top speed or handling. None of which matter while dragging the quarter mile. Except the hairdryer. 👍🏻✌🏻

1) Correction: Nearly destroyed Corvettes, since it was taken off production. 2) The title should have said "... destroys Camaros".

So do some "PCU chipping" and "minor mods" for the Camaro.
@ChadHargisАй бұрын
I wouldn't go so far as to say it DESTROYED Corvettes. It was a luxo-boat with a powerful engine and short gearing. If all you wanted to do was to stop light to stop light in velvety comfort, then the GN was the car for you. But enthusiasts know that performance is more than 0-60 or a quarter mile. I'll give you the fastest OEM stock GNX and I'll take an OEM stock Mazda Miata. Even on a big, long track like the Nurburgring, the GNX did the lap in 8:50 and the Miata did it in 7:37. How can a little underpowered Miata beat the "Corvette Destroyer"?
@buzzwaldron6195Ай бұрын
The GNX didn't have "short gearing", it had an OD transmission geared for 200 MPH and power to go 160 MPH, but governor limited to only 124 MPH... Actually at 00:30 if you had the hottest new 1987 Z28, you didn't have a "clutch" as it only came with an automatic! Same for GN/GNX... 11:35 biggest GNX suspension change was they threw away the A-body 4 link rear suspension and added an F-body (Camaro/Firebird) style torque arm rear suspension for more traction. And unlike the F-body mistake with arm on the left, Buick put the arm on the right where it worked better by helping keep the right rear tire planted against drive shaft torque!

I have to say this, especially since we are talking about the 'turbo 6'. Not sorry...if you have a GN and you take that 3.8 out and replace it with a V8 (or any other engine), it's no longer a Grand National. It's just another Regal/Cutlass.

Everybody knew what a Grand National was back then! Stock Iroc's weren't racing Grand Nationals on the street everybody knew deal! Now if a Cyclone or Typhoon showed up...that was a much different story! Cyclone's and Typhoon's were some of the fastest Trucks on the street! They can beat a Grand National easy!
