I have a 1973 Cadillac memory that will forever be etched into my brain: My Dad used to do mechanic work out of our garage as a side hustle back when I was a little kid, and one of his regular customers had a green on green on green '73 Sedan DeVille... I remember taking a test ride with him one night, being intrigued by the fiber optic lamp monitors on the front fenders and above the back window, floating along a straight stretch of tarmac called Airport Road. Dad matted the accelerator at about 50mph, the car dropped into second gear as the secondaries dropped open; there's nothing like the aural signature of a big cube V8 inhaling through a Quadrajet... I remember the speedometer climbing to about 90mph before it shifted back into direct, then passing 100 before Dad let off of the accelerator- and the car kept pulling. We went down into a gentle dip and crossed some railroad tracks that ran diagonally across the road at 110-115, the Cadillac maintaining its composure as Dad cut the ignition, put it in neutral and coasted to a stop on the side of the road. After unjamming the throttle linkage, we cruised home, none the worse for wear... Sure, almost all modern cars will probably run circles around a 1973 Cadillac... but there's absolutely *nothing* memorable about sitting atop a grey seat inside a stiffly sprung silver egg as a buzzy 4 cylinder whisks you over the century mark after seven gear changes. It's safe, and efficiently sterile. Give me the green Cadillac!

I can remember seeing the big sedans, ski racks on top loaded with skis, headed to the ski resorts near Lake Tahoe. And always top off the fuel tank in Auburn or Bowman, you never know how long you might get stuck on Donner! Isn't it amazing how the Greatest Generation survived without driving a four-wheel drive truck every day? 🤭

I worked in a garage when these were popular....472 and 500 cid engines had SOO much blowby...Checking the air filter always had the crankcase ventilator spewing oil into the air filter housing with the air filter sitting on a half inch of oil! Maybe a climate thing here more north or a mis-engineering of the calibration of the PCV valve. I was a young mechanic with older toffee-nosed self absorbed Cadillac owners seeing my youth preventative of me trying to help them by always changing the air filter, the crankcase ventilator, and the PCV valve always at the same time...That strategy seemed to work...I always thought my Thunderbird Diamond Jubilee Edition was far superior in my mind way back then....I am now 60 years old and proud owner of two 27 year old Ford's still running strong. A F150 XL and a Crown Victoria LX...Both great vehicles at almost 500 000 kilometers each!

The A.I.R. pump didn't just dilute the exhaust. It allowed the carb to be set to idle rich, which reduces NOx and CO at the expense of increasing HC in the exhaust. By injecting clean air into the exhaust ports, that HC would be burned in the exhaust at low temperature and pressure,meaning cleanly. So it allowed the engine to idle almost without any emissions at all. Cadillac had it on all years except 1970 (so people trying to build performance Cadillac engines seek the 1970 cylinder heads, which don't have the AIR passages...) The system really works. When I moved to California, I had to smog the 74 Eldorado, and the shop guys eyed it suspiciously, they thought it would ruin their equipment (it was an East Coast car so it was externally ugly with dull paint and rust, but an as new interior). The guy came up to me after, said they had to run the car twice because they thought they might have missed something. It was a borderline pass for a 1994 California car, obviously passed the 1974 standards with flying colors. Almost zero emissions across the board, as advertised!
@JohnM-c5f5 сағат бұрын
Exactly right, the AIR system reduced more emissions than any other device back then without the cost of excessive HP as the early CATs did in 1974. I still remember not being able to play outside when I was a boy in LA in the early 70’s due to the smog alerts which in turn influenced me to grow up to become a CA smog technician for 30 years. I never liked the sound of the air pump but they really do accomplish what they were designed for. I also really appreciate Adam’s knowledge on these wonderful luxury liners but I hope he could do a little more research on this unloved but important emissions device.

Thank you Adam for all your hard work, you always seem to find hidden gems. Your knowledge of 60's thru present is appreciated. IMO the 71-72 models had more of a classic "Cadillac Look". I think the Delta 88's of 1973 were able to pull off the "Battering Ram " bumpers best for 3 reasons: 1)The endura body colored pieces under the headlights. 2) The waterfall split grille, above and below the bumper 3) The curves on the front end piece were much less angular than their GM counterparts.

Very similar to my mother's dark forest green metallic 1973 Calais Coupe with a white padded top. Cadillac didn't typically apply wood veneer in the Calais models, but my mother's Calais had woodgrain on the dash and door panels. Strangely, it didn't have woodgrain on that rear seat curve panel. It had lower rocker moulding trim as well. That was a very comfortable-riding car. I loved the front end of the '73 the best of those years. That big 472 Powerplant was smooth and quiet. I owned a 1972 Cadillac Sedan de Ville in Cerulean Blue Firemist with medium blue leather. I owned it from 1977 through 1987. It only had 21,000 miles on it when I bought it in spring of '77. Throughout the time I owned it, I never recall any of the problems with fit and finish as you described. Neither with my mother's 1973 Calais. The door pull straps on my 1972 Sedan de Ville never got loose or broke away, as you mentioned. Both the '73 and '72 were very well-built cars. Like you said, Adam, today, many former owners of large American luxury cars have moved to large crew cab trucks. As have I. I now have a 2002 Ford F-350 XLT Crew Cab Power Stroke with only 39,720 miles on it. That huge, 7,730-pound, behemoth lumbers and loafs down the expressway on its enormous, 168" wheelbase just like the Cadillacs of yesterday. Only now I have an enormous "trunk" with a fiberglass tonneau cover on the 8' bed. It rides and drives like a big car. Fully loaded with every power option and a concert sound system. Mine can easily seat 7 people. 3 front and 4 back.

Great video, as always! I had a 1973 Cadillac Calais sedan that I loved. I slightly preferred the 71 and 72 styling, mainly because of their lack of impact bumpers, but I didn't realize there were significant quality improvements for 73. One note about your comments: The "V" around the Cadillac crest was used on both the Calais and DeVille models throughout the 1960s and into the 80s. The exceptions were the 1970 and 71 models, where it was dropped across both models. In 72, the "V" returned on both -- happily, IMO. At no point in those years, to my knowledge, did the "V" or lack thereof ever distinguish the Calais from the DeVille.

I've owned 3 of these all 73 all coupes. There is nothing like it. You can drive for 8 hours and get out feeling like you've been sitting in your living room. With a bit of carb tuning and a rear sway bar they go pretty damn good and handle surprisingly well.. Smaller secondary rods and loosening the secondary air valve setting is a must. The GM climate control is also amazing when it worked correctly. Getting the spare out and in is a chore. I wish I could find another that isn't so expensive. All of mine were less than $3500, the first was $1800 and it was only 10 years old.

I love the 1973 Cadillac Coupe DeVille - my first Cadillac, I ought to have kept it (I find I say that about so many cars, all full-sized GMs from 1973).

I think the front 5 MPH bumper treatment on these cars is one of the best looking I've ever seen; with the sides wrapping all the way back to the wheel openings, it unapologetically advertises its function, which is fine with me. I wish I could say the same about Cadillac's rear bumpers during this era, especially '74-'76 treatment; that was just a mess. The coolest thing about owning one of these (I had a '73) was the way the seatback latches clicked when you opened the door; sure, the inertia-driven latches introduced in the '76 Chevette and propagated to all of GM's full-sized coups the next year, made more sense, but the electric ones felt special.

Wonderful job, Adam! Personally, I feel the '73 was the best looking of the 71-73 trio, with the newly integrated head/park lamp assembly, the bold, vertical grill, and the stout front bumper. The 74-76 will always remain my all time favorites, tho. especially the '76. Note that 1973 was the first year for the beautifully simple, elegantly restrained, standard wheel covers, that would remain until the end of the 1976 model year. These were, to my eye, far more elegant and luxurious than the previous "Sun Ray" wheel covers of '71-'72. This would also be the first year for the optional Turbine Vane wheel disc option. This particularly stunning example is Park Avenue Gray Metallic with a black, tuxedo grain vinyl roof. The interior, trimmed in sierra grain leather in black, compliments it nicely. I see a very well optioned car, with a rare (although becoming more popular) rear defrost, tile/tel column, power aerial instead of windshield mounted, climate control, etc. Someone has truly cherished this car. Wonderful work!

The trunk on the Oldsmobile Aurora was also exceptionally deep and quite flat. Things that rolled forward were gone. (there were also issues with trunk sealing on those cars too).

For being such a large car, it makes a great looking two door.

My very first car when I turned 16 in 1986 was *almost* a 1973 Coupe DeVille. It was Saturn Bronze Firemist with a cream beige interior and matching vinyl top. It was gorgeous and I wanted it so bad but after test driving it my dad wouldn't let me buy it because of the gas mileage. I ended up with a 1982 Dodge Colt RS as my first car.
