I can only recommend buying the Orange Pi 5. I bought it an 8 gig version few months ago and I've been using it as a server / worker node in a k3s cluster + running some docker containers on it. I also have a raspberry pi 4. The performance difference is huge towards the orange pi. It is very stable, very reliable, extremely fast + it has an m.2 slot which is awesome. So if you only gonna use cli and want something that you can throw into the corner of your room to run your services then orange pi it is.

The Orange Pi5 plus is king of the hill in my opinion but is close in price to the N100 powered mini PCs. Bang for buck I think the Raspberry Pi 5 is the best option, however you will have to wait. If you want a fast SBC now Orange Pi5 is the winner. There is an optimised version of Ubuntu by Joshua Riek that shows the Orange Pi5 at it's best. I wish it was the official OS for the OP5. I wouldn't buy a Raspberry Pi 4 right now I would wait for the 5 or get an Orange Pi5. Thanks for the video.

I'm not owner of any sbc. Of all currently available on the market, which one would make a great desktop replacement (for web browsing and smooth KZbin video playback) and some occasional tinkering?
@helpingninja9 ай бұрын
Well it's not an easy answer. If you want a Desktop experience, the requirement is to run Linux on it - and that has some consequences. Especially in 3D and video capabilities - linux has and to this day have poor hw acceleration. So smooth youtube experience may be kinda problematic on Linux. On the other hand running Android on SBC you'll be fine. In my honest opinion the best arm SBC today to run as desktop is the Orange Pi 5 Plus version. If you have more buck to spend...I'll recommend something x86 based - like a Intel NUC mini PC. That's basically mini-factor fully capable computer.
@jasonkulhanek680210 ай бұрын
You should be comparing either Raspberry Pi 4 to Orange Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi 5 to Orange Pi 5 based on when the technology for each board was released...otherwise you are not properly comparing raspberrys to oranges (so to speak). If someone actually thinks there's even a comparison, they are not familiar with SBCs in which case they should just buy any of the top SBCs latest releases and not models that are 3+ years old and they'll be fine then (leaning more towards RPis simply because of the ease of use over the others). And with Banana Pi finally releasing their Linux image for their BPI-M6, your 2024 choices are RPi5, Orange Pi 5 (OP5 Plus) or Banana Pi M6 (BPI-M6). With the OP5 Plus allowing for a fast M.2 SSD drive, 8-cores and a NPU (Neural Processing Unit) processor along with more support than the Banana Pi...it is a very strong contender as first choice. The BPI-M6 only has 4 main cores, but it also has a 1-core Cortex processor (so think RPi4 + Cortex MCU packaged together with internal linkage). The only thing RPi5 has over the others is popularity since the RPi5 doesn't perform as well as OP5 or BPI-M6 boards. Popularity does bring with it more projects/support which for someone new to SBCs, that is invaluable. So if you are a newby, RPi5 is a great first choice. If you are skilled user, OP5 Plus (or even just the OP5) can offer quite a bit more power. And if you are into AI (running on NPUs) and have the skills to back it, the OP5, OP5 Plus or the BPI-M6 are great choices. Maybe 'Helping Ninja' just doesn't have other SBCs and those were all he had to do a comparison video with...otherwise as interesting as this video is, I don't think the comparison is even relevant.

Thanks for the input; I appreciate it. Well, you're quite correct; at the time of making this video, I was still waiting for the RPi5 to arrive.

There is only like 1 dude in the community working on the Orange Pi for ports and community support (god bless you Joshua Riek) and the OS options from O Pi are limited and iffy. Their specs are great looking, but you really have to make sure you can find the drivers or support for what you want to do with them or can write it yourself. You can get an R Pi and find thousands of uses with all the support you need and repurpose them over and over. Orange Pi and the other available offerings out there just don't have a fraction of the community as the R Pi and it makes it harder for new folks to use them and feel successful as they learn. I don't think the other SBC providers will catch up any time soon, but who knows. Get an R Pi bottom line, no brainer.

Well though not reviewed by you, I have a couple of the Orange pi 5 plus boards, one 16GB and the other 32GB. I specifically chose it because it DIDN'T have built on WiFi. It does however have M.2 E key which allowed me to add an Intel AX210GNW card for WiFi6 and bluetooth. It includes a PAIR of 2.5Gb network ports as well. It has a pair of full sized HDMI ports as well as a an HDMI input. USBC/DP, 40 Pin GPIO, two USBA 2.0 and two 3.0, EMMC port, and an IR receiver. Bench marking the M.2 SSD resulted in 3000MB/sec read and 550MB/sec write from my Samsung 980Pro. Network to my NAS (1Gb network) resulted in sustained 113MB/sec read or write. 4K/60Hz is no problem, though you will need a heat sink. Overall slightly larger but holly cow is it a ripper and literally ticks all the boxes and promises to be up-gradable in the future. Considering the ease of purchase, more modern hardware, and vastly superior load out of the Orange Pi 5 Plus I can't see any reason to consider the Raspberry Pi5 unless you are attached to the form factor or your such a neophyte that you must have the RP ecosystem and support. Running a Ubuntu and with a bit of tweaking, this thing could easily replace most desktops. Great video though and I do have to agree with you on all your points.

It depends on what you want to do with it. For a Retro video game console, Orange Pi 5 wins. As a cheap desktop computer, the Orange Pi 5 wins, it has better performance. From making drones, the Raspberry Pi Zero W wins, because it doesn't consume a lot of energy. I don't see a reason to buy a Raspberry Pi 4, the performance isn't that great. The power consumption isn't as good as a Raspberry Pi Zero W which can be used as a microcontroller for drones, and remote control cars.
