Actually, using ''shoemaker'' as an insult has to do with something that got lost in translation: before the French Revolution, 95% of the population wore clogs, not leather shoes, which were expensive. Clogs could be hewn out of a log in half an hour using an adze and a gimlet. So a guy hacking away at a log was a clogmaker (''sabotier'' in French) and if a cook hacked away at a piece of meat with a chef's knife instead of a meat cleaver, the chef might exclaim, ''What are you, a clogmaker or something?''. Btw, my father was a seventh-generation shoemaker. R.I.P., Anthony, sorely missed.

Hey Balvenie please change the title of this video. A cobbler is not a shoemaker. Cobbler works on repairing old shoes while shoemaker makes a shoe from scratch, there is a huge distinction and most shoemakers would be offended to be called cobbler.

The reasons why those shoes fit so well? One; they are WIDE enough! Most folks won't get their shoes wide enough to move and flex properly. So the front of their feet end up all squashed and cramped and unbalanced. There is also the problem of nerve damage in the front of the feet. I have that, and it never gets better. I actually was selling good quality shoes, running around like a crazy person in agony. I had always had small feet, it NEVER occurred to me that my foot bones would spread because I was spending all that time on my feet every day, running all over the store. I was a 7B, Goddamn it! No. I became more like a 8.5 EEE, and I now where men's shoes. I can't work on my feet any more. Secondly! People don't support their backs or arches properly. But those suede booties come with a bit of heel, to help distribute the shock of walking all through the body. That bit of heel helps the arch function better, so that the constant shock of walking doesn't go straight to the small of the back. People with dropped arches (flat feet) are always exhausted or have pain in their back, their legs and feet. Once they start wearing shoes with a bit of heel that are also wide enough, it's like a miracle. Suddenly they have energy at the end of the day to get other stuff done, they can go out on Friday night instead of collapsing in a weeping, exhausted mess. Correct fit matters!

I worked at a big handmade boot company for four years doings uppers (the top leather components) and various other things. This made me miss it a lot, we of course used more machines but a lot was hand done for thin expensive leather like in this video. I quit because the pay was bad, but I, and many others had a real passion for the work. I was apart in making and repairing celebrities boots and besides the pay, the work was all worth it and lead to great learning experiences.

my guess is the shoemaker insult came from a chef who can't cook a steak and makes a tough as leather steak like "eating a shoe" ergo the chef turned a good steak into shoe leather and might as well make a shoe with it, it's not a jab at the shoe making trade it's an insult to a chef being so bad he can't make a proper steak.
