Ray-Ban Original Wayfarers vs Persol 649s Sunglasses Review.

With the weather reaching the mid-30s here in Berlin, it is time to lay down the raw denim in favour of a more summer-friendly trouser option. This does give me the opportunity to branch out a little in the content on this vlog. As much as I love to love and love more, denim I find that there are a lot of other items that share the same core values as our beloved blue jeans. Namely quality, craft, value and narrative.

Given the weather why not start off with some classic staples of men's style, sunglasses.
Pitting these two classics against one another was inspired by the movie Call Me by Your Name. Armie Hammer who plays Oliver is seen in a pair of Persol 649s throughout the movie and Timothée Chalamet playing Elio wears the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Guys, if you have not seen the movie... well finish watching this vlog then head over to Netflix and watch Call Me by Your Name. It is a beautiful story and has some of the best costume and set design I've seen since The Talented Mr. Ripley.
I bought both pairs quite recently. At the time I intended on sending one back. but for a number of reasons I have fallen in love with both styles. I have worn them a little bit, certainly enough to get a good solid impression of the sunglasses before doing this review. I kept all the bits and bobs in the boxes untouched so you can see what you get when buying the glasses.
Spoiler alert, they are both amazing sunglasses and would serve the majority of us very well. But there are a few nuanced details that might sway you one way or the other.

Eyeglass snobs know Persol because of the silver arrow inlay. The inlay is iconic w/o the obvious Ray-Ban logo in the very same place. Persol is cool w/o letting everyone near you know what you are wearing.

I have both and love both. I agree that the Persol feel more premium. Although they are both now Italian, the Persol are Italian design and the Ray Ban are American design so it no surprise that the Persol design is more refined. Both are classics however the Ray Ban are more iconic. It’s always good to have a choice so I recommend getting both.

When Luxottiga bought Persol [95] there were certain caveats & conditions . Persol still has a very big say in the manufacturing process, location , styles , materials & keeping their tradition & history . When Luxottiga bought Ray-ban [99] , they bought the name & the range of styles , not the lens technology originally made & owned by Bausch & Lomb . Some RB models are being made in China, surprise surprise !! . Clubmaster , Cockpit , Caravan are all made in both Italy [ for now] & China , you can tell if your RB`s are made in China by the letter T being printed on the inner right arm of your sunglasses . It takes on average 14 hours to make a pair of handmade Persol sunglasses , i shudder to think what a pair of RB`s take in China . I was a big RB fan years ago but i won`t touch them now , Luxottiga are doing their best to destroy the legacy of RB , the classic wayfarers have been ruined by the tacky logo on the arms & lens when just one would be more than enough . Less is more, is not a philosophy Luxottiga is interested in for the mass marketed , watered down new Ray Ban . @ Cee are Dee , the Persol looks better by a mile IMHO & nice review.

I have a few Ray Bans and they are indeed really good sunglasses. However I also own some Persols and I definitely prefer them. I find it very hard to resist against something that has such a high quality feel to it. Combined with those classic and timeless styles, yes, definitely Persol for me.

It was good to watch your comparison of the 649s and the Wayfarers. I've always been a Ray Ban man - right from their B&L days (which I found were better), mainly Wayfarers and more Aviators. But recently, at my opticians, a pair of Persol 714s blew me away with their beauty and intricacy of craftmanship. I bought them after hesitating for over three months, since I already have a pair of RBs in my car. But the vintage charm eventually drew me in. I just find the Persols more unique, with more flair (the 714 isn't as understated as the 649s) and less common. And umm..less plasticky - my bugbear with Wayfarers.

Just got a set of the slimmer frame 9649s about a month ago. The slimmer frame combined with the glass lenses makes them slip on my nose a bit, but molding the temples inward has helped that. I'm also happy to report they came with a quality hard shell case, very different from the one you got.

Great video. I just purchased 6649s polarized with gradient gray lenses. You can feel the quality. Maybe Im biased but the Persol shades suit you better.

I might be biased. I bought my first pair of Persol and am currently on my 7th pair (yes I have a problem. No, I don’t plan on changing it😂). I have gone exclusively to them because there is just something special about them. It’s hard to explain the level of craftsmanship and build quality, but I haven’t found it in any other glasses. I totally agree on the case point though. They are crappy for the price point. I personally have never had a case pop open by having it being brushed against. I do have a hard time finding the snap on the front sometimes. I would recommend looking for a calligrapher edition or hard shell case and primarily using that for on the go if you are worried about protection. Honestly though, I don’t baby my sunglasses. I wear them in the pool and have accidentally put backpacks and stuff on them in the soft case. They are so well built I have never had an issue with scratching or warping (don’t purposely try this, but my point is they are really strong). Really I’d only upgrade if you feel you are overly aggressive or overly afraid of the damage to the glasses. I get the appeal of ray-band however. They are iconic to everyone and are a status symbol. I personally would have problems justifying buying a pair because while you are getting a good product, it’s still highly mass produced. So it’s a high cost without the level of quality or craftsmanship that goes into building a persol frame. To me, it’s worth it to go one step down in recognizability for what I believe to be a better, more refined product. Even if it costs more, I feel like it’s justified if you get what I mean. I hope this helps to anyone trying to decide between the two!😁

Hey Holden. haha, I would never try and talk anyone out of a collection... I think you can probably tell I have a bit of a denim problem 😂. I could not agree more, mate. The Persols are a step above and it is good to hear that they are durable.. this is my first pair and maybe I am babying them a little bit. I will still look out for a better case but at the moment I have an old one that does just fine, not that stylish but maybe that is a good thing. A little urban camouflage. In the end tho... I kept both... I find them useful for a number of different occasions.

imo persols are a bargain for the quality. iv had friends who have owned 500-1000 dollar pairs of glasses from gucci and such, but they still dont have that 'wow' quality of the persols. its rare these days to own something so beautifully crafted for a fair price.

I have 5 Persols. 714, 2x649, 9649, 3225. I am a Persol fan. Tho I love some Gucci models, RB cats ect. but I only own and buy Persol. IMO Persol is just premium, the only biggest drawback is that I think ALL Persols come with a glass lenses (which is what I want) BUT it makes them a bit heavy. When it's hot they sometimes slide down the nose, and you feel the weight. The other small drawback - you need to take very good care of them after wearing, acetate can go white/foggy over time due to sweat ect. I always clean them when I get home. You can polish them as well if necessary. All in all 1) a bit heavy 2) acetate need to be cared. Other than that I prefer them

Oh man! I can't believe that you chose Wayfarers over Persol 649s just because of wider brand recognition for Ray-Ban. You said it yourself. The Persols are clearly better quality but to you the Wayfarers are more "iconic". To the more sophisticated, the Persols are just as "iconic", but what all of that comes down to is trying to borrow some "cool" from other people who have worn the sunglasses. Actually not that cool! 😎 Just look at the picture for your video where you're wearing both sunglasses. Judge for yourself and forget about the brands. You clearly look better (even "cooler") in the Persols. You said that you could tell just taking them out of the box that they are high quality. (And you said the opposite about the Wayfarers). You should be able to see in a side-by-side of yourself wearing them how much better you look in the Persols. Anybody who sees you in the Persols will respond to how good they look and they won't have ask to look at the brand name or other details to decide how "iconic" they are. Watch your video again and observe how "for no logical reason" you talk yourself into choosing the Wayfarers. As a fan of your denim videos, I'm embarrassed for you! You just exposed yourself in the act of giving in to mass marketing over your own independent judgment. Send the Wayfarers back. You'll be happier and get better responses from people with taste if you wear the Persols.

Nice video I've always worn Ray-Bans and been fine with them I did just recently purchase a pair of Persol 714 and now the Ray-Bans feel like a toy I can say that while expensive there are deals to be had and at least at their various retail prices it feels like you are getting a lot more for your money

The temples are squeezing my head… I ordered the 54 mm version and still too tight… I also have a 50 mm Wayfarer Classic which is smaller but still have more gap between the temples and my head.

@@attilab.2818 you should be able to get them adjusted they should fit better especially at the temples they should be very comfortable due to the maflecto, it is possible they might just not fit your head but the temples should be comfortable with the flexible areas they have

The Persol sunglasses are like a work of art and probably will require a little more maintenance and I also feel like I have to be more delicate with them, The ray bans on the other hand I worry about less and is a easier look to pull off. I probably have a hard folding Persol case you could have, too bad your in germany I don't know what post would cost.

I have two pair of Ray-Bans and a pair of Maui Jim . I now have a pair of Persol. The Ray-Bans are good . The lens on the Maui Jim are the best for the beach . Now , the Persol. I can't really say yet . I do think the frame is the best . I will have to see how they perform this summer .

I got a pair of Wayfarers as a gift and never really thought about my other pairs of sunglasses after that. Always bring them along with me. And ironically, I would have never bought the pair I have specifically because they're the urban camo ones - but I actually really like them. It's a small detail and pretty much the only "flamboyant" thing I wear, if you can call it that. Only on the temples of the glasses, I believe it's just like a piece of cloth that gets glued on. Both sunglasses suit you, btw. If I had to pick one, I'd lean a little toward the Ray Bans on you. EDIT: Actually, I'm wearing the Wayfarers in my profile picture.

I have 3 Ray Ban glasses, an old B&L which have had a tone of use, they were better made then. The classic Aviator and the folding Wayfarers which I love. I also recently bought a pair of Persol 714 Steve McQueen glasses which are also folding glasses. They are hand made in Italy and quality is superb but I have a wide head and while my Wayfarers fit perfectly my Persol 714 SM with 54mm lenses aren't as wide hinge to hinge. They do fit me because of the bending temples. However, I would definitely prefer wide hinge to hinge frames. The aviators with 58mm lenses are 137mm wide, the 714SM with 54mm lenses are 130mm wide and Persol don't do a larger / wider frame. The glasses are classic though. The 649 you have has the same lens shape but the profile of the 649 is flatter than that of the 714 which is why I opted for the 714.... Maybe I should try a pair of 649.

I found myself reaching for the ray band way more. The persols just don’t sit as snug on my face and I get the impression they are always about to fall off. I still like the style of the persols more however.

@@CeeAreDee The more I wear the Persol 714 the more I get used to them. I think one reason the glasses slide forward is because these lenses are made of glass rather than plastic. I couldn't say I have a preference over my Rayban sunglasses, I wear them equally. I found out the overal with of the 649 is slightly narrower than the 714 so I won't be getting them. Yesterday I dropped the 714SM and my heart stopped for a few seconds but nothing happened to them. I got lucky this time I guess. UPDATE I had a chance to try on the 649 at the airport and I liked them better than the 714 so I'm getting a pair too. I'm trying to get my head round the fact they are slightly narrower than the 714.... I'm a bit disappointed with the design of the 714....you can actually scratch the lenses if you aren't careful when folding the temples. I have the folding wayfarer too and the design is perfect.

Great review. Was eyeing the 649 but decided on the 3152S because of the size of my face. They came in a pretty strong box instead of a leather pouch so maybe Persol listened to all the feedback or it's model dependant.

They're both amazing sunglasses, but for my huge head, the wayfarers look out of place sadly. So I've been sticking with 649s and 714s. I almost never fold the 714s but the metal details on the central and side hinges looks really cool imo, whether they're the classic down fold or the integrated side fold of the McQueens.

i own sunglasses from both ray bans and persols (i have 2 persols and 3 raybans - i own a few cause i have cataracts and can declare them as a medical expense on my taxes and insurance from work cover 80% of the cost), but to be fair i prefer my ray bans. Their style is more simple and easily compatible with everyday wear. Persols are of higher quality, especially their lenses but seem to give a more imposing look rather than the simple and clean look provided by the Ray bans. However when it comes to eyeglasses, IMO nothing beats Persol in regards to mass marketed products. There could be some specialty ones or niche brands who have better products. However from luxotica brand and the other common brands, I would say Persol offer the best option.

I have and love them both (plus dozens more). But my wayfarer is Bausch & Lomb with crystal lenses, and with the strongest old BL acetate, which makes it equal to Persol. Unfortunately, today's RBs have dropped a lot in quality.

Both are great sunglasses. I really love Persol because they have that style that combines with all, just like if you get a pair of Wayfarer and other of the Aviator in the same frame. In my opinion, the Wayfarer have that angular position that doesn't like to all people, but you could fall in love with them. Unfortunately I don't have good experiences with Persol, being an expensive brand, my two pairs of 714 just f*ck their nose bridge system. The first one I thought was my fault, so I bought the second one and nope, just the same. They are folding sunglasses that aren't made for being folded. Be careful with that 614 sunglasses, I've seen many photos of how the nose Meflecto system just crack. By the way, the quality of the B&L Ray Ban frames weren't that good as today with Luxxotica. But the crystals were even better than Persol today and that's what all matter. B&L used to innovate with minerals through Ray Ban glasses just like Fantasees, Diamond Hard, Chromax, Ambermatic, two polarized glasses version, etc. PD: Wayfarer and 614 suit incredible on your face!

I have the Persol limited editions 69218, 007 Casino Royale (Aston Martin scene) and 714 Steve McQueen version, besides three more so nice and good fitting Persol's. I daily use all of them (although I keep the 69218 frames for special events). I either have two RayBan Wayfarers, black and caramel frames, both original made in USA in first 90,s, before the company was adquired by Luxotica. These both good quality RayBan's have nothing to see with the awful modern ones by the same brand. Between Persol and RayBan, Persol's are always the nicest, classy, perfect designs and handcrafted master pieces! Light-years away from the vulgar appearance and cheaper finishing of nowdays RayBan models.

Just purchased both as there are crazy deals going on for these two at the moment and now I finally got some quality sunglasses for the first time :D Let's see if I'lll end up keeping both like you in the end^^ On the tortoise ray-ban's: Did you go with the orangey, lighter glasses for any particular reason? As there would have also been the darker glasses, similar to the Persol's that you got. Which tint of the glasses do you feel is more classic? I went for the orangey, lighter ones as I felt it suited my skintone a little better. With the classic black and the darker browns I felt that it sits a bit heavy on my face. Same with the lens tint. That gentle gradient lightens up what is quite a heavy frame. There is also the practicality of having a gradient on the lens, as with I guess 99.9% of the world population I am on my phone way too much, this makes it easier to see... Same when driving. I mean, the Persols I guess are the more classic.

Thanks Ben. Nope, no hard case option. I would have certainly taken it over the soft case. At the moment they are in a very unceremonious cheap plastic case I found lying around. Guess it is a little urban camouflage agains thieves.

I agree with you! Ray Ban is the brand that more has suffered with Luxxotica because they sell them like candies. I still have four pairs of Ray Ban for almost 30 years, they're practically immortals. I don't have any pair of vintage Persol, but in my experience my two Luxxotica Persol 714 f*ck their bridge system losing strong to fold them and the temples scratch the nose acetate. I've seen how they scratch the crystals in 54mm version. If you don't take care about this things, the 714 practically destruct themselves.

I I’m a woman and I prefer Ray Ban since they are more unisex. My two ray bans are very classic color that can totally be worn by men and women. Persol I think it’s more for the boys. Now oliver people’s it’s just the more expensive raybans their styles are slightly more defined between sunglasses fir women and sunglasses for men they do own some unisex models. But yes rayban when it comes to Their icons are 100% unisex.

Ray Ban is an American brand which is currently Italian owned. The "brand" is definitive of origin; ownership of brands is what may change- not the branding itself. Hope that makes sense. Try applying this standard to other internationally known brand situations and you will understand more clearly. If GM buys Ferrari, does that make Ferrari an American car? Certainly not! The brand is- and always will be- Italian. Only the ownership would have changed.

I dunno man. I think that kind of reasoning becomes dangerous and can justify too much intentional consumer confusion. Old brands can be bought over, the production moved. Quality cut and prices maintained. Not saying this is the case for ray-ban. But if the ownership is Italian and the production is Italian. Sounds like an Italian brand to me.

You just cannot change historical origin. It came from somewhere. That genesis means something. I think this way for all countries and their products. Do you consider Apple a Chinese company? I’d say Apple is a global brand at this point. And I do see your points. I just think that brand history is too easily milked for bad ends. I’d rather have a clear and open vision of where a brand is at any one point. As you say, this info is all easily accessible and I think this way there is less chance of misunderstandings on the customer side of things. And I also appreciate talking these things through.

@@CeeAreDee I'd completely agree that brands like Apple (and Coca Cola, et al.) are global brands- but aren't we doing them wrong by ignoring from where they came, all the while making exceptions for brands that buy another pre-founded company in order to move it to where they are? That seems like we are giving short-schrift to the founder and giving complete credit to the new buyer- which seems like something you are trying to avoid in your example. I think history matters and the homework should be done by the prospective customer. I don't think we will ever stop the ill- willed from doing dishonest work. You know, people are people ;) but you are correct, all too many abuse history to their advantage. I don't like that either. I just want credit to go to the deserved.

They are both made in the SAME factory, Luxottica makes most of the glasses on the market. Not to say the quality will be the same, but yeah just sayin'. Great video by the way! Persols are great!

Ah yeah. I didn't know that. I thought Persol had a dedicated factory in the North of Italy and Ray Ban were made all over.

@Pau this is not true. Both RayBan and Persol are owned by Luxottica but are not produced in the SAME factory. @CeeAreDee / Rope Dye is right. Persols are still made in the historic factory near Turin.

@@linus284 that's right. Even now 2020 some Ray Ban are made in China like Club Masters, Kids and other few lines. Some Persol are still HANDmade in Turin, but I don't know if they have the same quality than before 1995. What I know is that a pair of Persol 714 destruct themselves. Ray Ban definitely lost its quality after 1999. Bausch & Lomb used to make really good sunglasses with better prices. They were practically immortals. Even today I still have Ray Ban from 30 years ago: Ambermatic, Diamond Hard, Aviator G15 and Wayfarer G15. Ambermatic and Wayfarer are really used, but still strong with no scratches. That's quality, not 2.2 mm to 1.8 mm that Luxxotica remove from Persol glasses to make them "lighter".

@@CeeAreDee Maui Jim is my go to in the $190-$250 price range. They have some priced much higher but you can find a solid selection in that price range..... I would recommend finding a pair of Maui's you like & buying them regardless of price. Maui Jim's quality & warranty are second to none.

Made in china Ray-bans are terrible, avoid them. Comparing the quality of made in Italy Ray-bans vs made in Italy persols I would choose Persol every time but I do tend to prefer the design of Ray-bans.
