I had the honor of meeting Ray Reardon at the New York Athletic Club. He was there for a snooker demonstration. Afterwards, I invited Ray to the pool hall to play 9-Ball. His response? "I'm afraid if I stepped into a pool hall I'd fall in the pockets." 🤣

Ray Reardon was hilarious, but he's right you know. If they made nine-ball tables with snooker pockets, it would make the game far more appealing. It just looks too easy for a decent cueist - the player can miss the pocket by several inches & the ball will still go in......
@davidhunternyc1
@davidhunternyc1 3 ай бұрын
@@kufujitsu 100% agree with you but every time I suggest rounding the pockets on pool tables, I get hate. I'm not even suggesting that pool switch to 6 X12 tables. Fine, keep pool tables 4 1/2 X 9 but round the pockets so you have to split the pocket to make the ball. Pool must evolve because pool is way too easy compared to snooker. When watching the top professional pool players, they're so good, it's kind of boring to watch, however, if you watch golf, the top players still hit the ball into sand traps and water. Also, rounded pockets would unify the cue sports. Chinese 8-ball uses rounded pockets too.
@kufujitsu
@kufujitsu 3 ай бұрын
@davidhunternyc1 Yeah you're spot on. Pool in the USA used to be on tight tables, but that was before they decided to commercialise the game with wider pocketed tables, so that the casual player could pot better. It's been like that ever since......

People forget that he was in his mid 30s when he turned pro - he has to be one of the best ever to play the game of snooker. Regained the world top spot in the 1980s and played his last final in 1990 - The European Grand Masters in Monaco. Had 20 Maximums to his credit and a 146 in tournament play. A class act if ever there was one and not surprised Ronnie would seek his coaching skills when he was struggling with his game. Seven Championships down the road and no regrets there. Interesting note that in one tournament back in the 1970s Ray made four centuries which was unheard of at the time. Thanks for the memories, Ray.

Ray owned the place before Rileys took over, anyway we used to see him come down for a coffee every now and again and would come over to the table to watch us play, he used to give advises like focus on the object ball as you strike and let your touch guide the cue ball. Brilliant advise and great guy all around.

@@user-yz8rv6rd8x I believe the standard improved dramatically but you have to credit him for improving the standard of Snooker. It was still a game full of drunks/druggies whereas he was a completely dedicated professional to the game with 7 hours of practice a day. I would say what got Hendry was the class of 92 coming along with their immense talent along with a decreased motivation from having surpassed Davis' world title count. The big mystery to me was why he fell off so hard, it wasn't a slow decline but a night and day difference.
