Both of Phil's parents died when he was really young. His mom suffered from addiction, schytsophrenia and DID. His father died of a heart attack when he was 10. His step father was abusive. He didn't REALLY start opening up about it until their last two albums. I recommend you listen to more and look into his story before you do. When A Demon Defiles A Witch, Blood Soaked Symphony and Orphan are good starts.

This whole album “The Valley” is about the lead singer Phil. “When a Demon Defiles a Witch” is another one you should react to.

Yeah Phil lived this, and more, though his Mom died of an OD. Whitechapel doesn't pull punches. This is Phil's therapy. Great reaction

PLEASE more Whitechapel. The Valley is one of my all time favorite albums and it really does a good job of conveying Phil's story. I highly recommend When A Demon Defiles A Witch!

Definitely also listen to when a demon defiles a witch it's one of my favorite songs and I even have a tattoo of the art seriously a masterpiece and for context the song is about the singer's mother who did die of an overdose when he was 15 after suffering with schizophrenia and abuse from his stepfather

Now you need to do some old Whitechapel lol You should do bring me home, though not old, it’s kind of a precursor……his dad died while Phil was real young. That song goes into that subject. This song followed, about his mom getting heavily into drugs, dealing with severe mental illness and delusions after getting with his pos step father, later, if I recall, overdosing when he was very young, leaving him with no parents. The album was inspired by the death of his stepfather and if you want to see his thoughts on him, the song Forgiveness Is Weakness is the route to go.

Orphan is sort of a part 2 of this song. I would definitely check it out if you want to listen to the rest of the story.

this entire album (The Valley) is about the vocalist Phil Bozeman's childhood. He has said that his father was the only thing that kept his mother somewhat sane so after he died his mother just spiraled out of controll. The album after this one (Kin) is more about his teenage/young aldulthood. (This is just my recolection but I think it is pretty accurate). Both of these albums are some of my all time favourites so you got a few more songs to react to haha.

One of my favorite Deathcore groups. Absolutely love this band. Pretty heavy catalog, if you decide to dive more into them. But they have also put out some pretty melodic songs for their genre as well.

Whitechapel's Bring Me Home is about Phil's dad, When A Demon Defiles A Witch is about how manipulative his step-father was to his mom, shit is both amazing and heartbreaking.

There's a good interview Phil did about the concept for this album, i recommend finding it. what others have said in the comments, Phil's early childhood was rough with his father dying when he was really young and his mother being addicted to pills and heroin brought on in no small part thanks to his step father who was an abusive piece of shit. Phil's mom also suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personality disorder) and Schizophrenia which made her addiction worse. Phil would later find an old diary of his mother's where she talks about the "witch" (one of her personalities) is tormenting her. Phil, left home and was in the care of his older sister and boyfriend (who got him into metal music) at the tender age of 13 (i think). His mother would commit suicide several years later. all in all, he's had one helluva bad childhood. I would HIGHLY recommend listening to the rest of the album The Valley, all the of the songs are roughly about his mother and his childhood.

Just to echo what others have said, "When A Demon Defiles A Witch" is an absolute must-listen and imo one of the best metal songs of the last decade. Up until 2019 (they came out in 2006), Whitechapel was known as a band that would just smash your skull in and throw some melody in for garnish to the point where they literally had no clean vocals until 2016 (and that was only one song). This album "The Valley", however, and the follow-up "Kin" saw them truly expand their sound and morph into something special. Both albums, as many mentioned, are about Phil's childhood and how he ultimately came out of it ok despite everything life through at him so young. Both are absolutely GORGEOUS and worth looking more into, but "When A Demon Defiles A Witch" is definitely a good one to go to next since it's the opener on "The Valley" and kind of serves as an intro to the story on both.
