Love these tutorials Matt. Just one historical correction though: According to the Russell Adams book, Gillette's troubles stemmed from arrogance rather than ignorance of Henry Gaisman's securing the relevant patents first. But Gillette was so emboldened by it's many previous patent victories that the company decided to throw down the gauntlet. VP Frank Fahey stated to shareholders: "If anyone feels that our company has infringed his patent rights, we suggest he come into court. We are not only prepared for any legal controversy, but we invite it. " So Gillette was well aware of the patent situation and decided to take the risks anyway. And Mr. Gaisman gladly called their bluff. And then...well you gave us the rest of the story.

Just had a shave with my slim handled New Long Comb. Paired with a Gillette Minora Platinum it shaves so comfortably and efficiently.

I just bought a New Short Comb to try tomorrow vs. the Old Short Comb I have been using for a while, which works pretty much perfectly for me. I often don't shave but once or twice a week and the razor mows it. One thing I notice is that the edges of the blade are down against the "teeth" of the comb on the Old type, but with the New type there is a space or gap from the "teeth" of the comb to the blade.

So with 7 days growth I shaved with the New model and whiskers did get stuck between the blade and comb. That does not happen with the Old model. I had to loosen the handle a few times to rinse out the stuck whiskers. The handle is much better on the New model though. No cracks and solid feel. The original handle on my Old model had the typical cracks and was loose and would spin around while shaving. The Razor Emporium replica handle solved that problem. The New model end result was a very nice two pass shave though. So for people who like to shave only once or twice a week I recommend an Old type and definitely buy the Razor Emporium replica handle.

Thanks for the background history; interesting stuff. I have tried so many razors both vintage and current manufacture; old types, new improveds, fatboy, slim, Wilkinson sword sticky, twist, fattip, Edwin Jagger, different Muhles, techs, feather and so on. Despite all the money and effort I've spent, the Gillette New has turned out to be my favourite razor by far with the perfect mix of aggressiveness & smoothness and is wonderfully balanced. My first New was the second-ever DE razor I purchased and I really should have just stopped there! I slightly prefer the short-comb version but there isn't that much between them. Whenever I see one going cheap, I will purchase it, polish off the plating (which is generally damaged) with a Dremel, get the brass to a mirror finish and then will give it away to a friend as a gift.

Picked up a Berkshire with case on EBay. The case and razor are in really good shape. I shaved with it yesterday with a Gillete Blue Blade. It was a great shave. I'm very pleased!

It just arrived in the mail today - a Gillette New Short comb. I waited until noon for it, so that I could give it a clean-up and first shave. Just as my Old Types and Goodwill, it gave a smooth shave, even with a 3x used Rapira LUX blade. It will be reserved for weekend shave rotation, in line with my other long & short comb razors.

I like a aggressive close shave but I always nick myself I have many razors modern ones that I like muler R41. Etc...... but my all time favorite is the Gillette new long comb it has been my best shave by far !!! Thank you Matt for all your collectors videos!!

I love my NEW short comb! My nickel one is in excellent original condition! I had one that was a replated then found one that was in original condition that looked really good so I ended up selling the one that I replated

I have a Red & Black New SC and find the shave very efficient. The only issue is the angle is though to find and keep. It goes from mild to aggressive very quickly!

I have a question, of which I appreciate guidance and clarification on these razors: As I have recently bought two razors that were described as the "New" type, I am suspicious of whether I have perhaps, though with the correct barbell handles, I may have with these the "Old" head and guard, because the two I acquired both have the THREE POST pins. Isn't it so then that the New had in fact only the SLIT in the guard, with corresponding head, and not pins? If this is the case, I have two mismatched razors! Thanks for help on this.

That bar handle was likely made on a screw machine, which was a high-production lathe that could roll threads and stamp that nice handle knurl.

Hi Matt. I really enjoy both the long and short comb Gillettes, but I prefer the long comb. I'm considering adding a Karve open comb to my rotation. My question for you is which Karve OC plate feels most similar to the Gillette Long Comb in your opinion? Obviously ymmv applies here, so no worries.

Wow! I've got a short comb version of this razor in the Red & Black case. I tried to clean the tarnish off and took the gold plating off the cap😕 No cracks or damaged teeth on the comb, but not worth re-plating I think. Haven't used it to shave with🤔 Once again a great video Matt, thanks👍 Enjoy!

In Latin America the Short Comb was manufactured in old Autostrop plants. I'd like to figure out if that was the case in the US. Or perhaps it was just Autostrop engineers who pushed the design. Kind of a mystery why years after the LC was introduced you find the Short Comb in Red and Black sets.

The NEW long comb is far more common and easier to find than the short comb. I own 6 long combs and 2 short combs and I like the way both shave. I'm still looking for a few more bar end handles, there are different styles of the bar end handles and 2 different versions of the heads and handles, some handles have a wider flair at the top of the threaded ferrule which matches up with the guards that have a wider space between bottom ridge. Those handles won't fit on the guards that have a shorter space between the bottom ridge.

Coincidentally, I was working on a patent application as I watched this video, and any patent number of historical importance is right in my wheelhouse. From the video I got nos. 1,9924,262 1,633,739 and 1,639,335, which look like old patent numbers. If you have other numbers relevant to the Probak-Gillette saga I'd love to have them; or if you have the formal name of the suit between Probak and Gillette I should be able to find it and the relevant Patents at issue. FWIW, I have one Short-Comb Bar Handle New, and several Long-Comb Ball Handle News, and they're all pretty nice, although the plating on them are largely rubbed off. Question: a lot of New razors seem to have caps with a different color from the guard and handle, apparently rose gold vrs. bright yellow gold. Is this correct?

In Star Trek Voyager, Capt Catherine Janeway stated, "All this talk of temporal distortion(time travel) gives me a headache"(slightly paraphrased)...I feel the same about some of the Gillette razor models that looks so much alike on the surface yet differ internally yet--at the same time--it still basically the same razor or is the same razor in different packaging or knowing they were modified for this or that reason which ultimately made no difference.......This gives me the same kind of Janeaway headache!

I just picked up a red/black new short comb off Goodwill for $20 with box and 4 unopened blades in box and one loaded blade. It is in pretty good shape but not stellar, maybe 6.5-7/10.
