Reacher Season 2 Nukes Modern Hollywood With “Toxic” Masculinity

Reacher season 2 starring Alan Ritchson has released to amazing reviews from both critics and audiences, which has resulted in Reacher breaking multiple streaming records. And it's easy to see why as it is a breath of fresh air from all the horrible shows coming from Disney and other studios which focus on political pandering and pushing messages, where as Reacher puts all it's focus on telling a good story before pushing a message.

Respectfully, this is just as ridiculous as the other side. Masculinity can 100% go too far. Bad behavior is not specific to sex or gender, but certain bad behaviors cannot exist without the existence, codification, and escalation of specific traits. To say that there is no negative version of masculinity is to pervert the science in the same way as the other side - though to a far lesser degree. For instance, aggression in males is distinct from aggression in females. Ours tends to be more physical. Theirs is more reputation destroying and cattiness. These are based on historical and evolutionary imperatives that correlate the capacity for violence with success in male dominated realms and inclusion in female spaces being a product of social success. We see it every day that toxic femininity demonstrates an excess of indulgence or over reliance on feminine forms of aggression. Toxic masculinity has to follow the same rules. This has nothing to do with Reacher. It’s a bloody good show with a believably and reasonably hyper-masculine (not toxically) lead; a great, well-balanced, supporting cast; good action; and an intriguing story line. But the pendulum is starting to swing too far in the other direction with comments like this.

This is Genuinely my favorite show on television right now, it’s not only a show with a big muscular masculine man, but it also has smart writing, genuine characters and has amazing fight scenes that don’t look fake or forced. And hey, even strongly written female characters that can both actually stand their ground without being overpowered. Great classic stuff, it’s the sort of thing I could see being made in the 80’s with Stallone or Schwarzenegger

How sinister this stuff is is fully apparent when you look at your own enjoyment of movies as a child. You never went to the cinema to 'be educated on world views' you just went to watch Woody and Buzz Lightyear going on a crazy adventure in Toy Story or something. And when you imagine yourself sat there, young, innocent, happy, and fully emotionally alert and primed for a great experience - you realise that's when you were the most susceptible to having your world view influenced by someone using the platform to push theirs. And all the sudden we realise we may be looking at the main culprit behind 20% of people losing their minds by age 10 and not knowing who the hell they are or want to be, in an even worse way than anyone has ever struggled before....

Just that small clip from “She-Hulk” where Jen “womansplaining” how she knows how to control her anger better than Bruce because she is a “woman”, clearly shows that this show was written by a woman and is pushing “only” the toxic feminist point of view. Because a “woman” has no idea what “men” go through mentally and physically everyday, but as the one playing the “woe is me” card, they are only seeing their point of view. These “toxic” women ONLY think they have life rough. You know why you don’t see “men” always crying and playing the “woe is me” card? It’s because “men” keep this to themselves. Men who are “SA” or are beatin up all the time, (i.e. being bullied), are always criticized for not saying anything. Emotionally weak men who are constantly “a8used” by their strong minded female companions cannot go to the police for help, because they are shamed by the public and the authorities. People say “how can that small woman hurt this big man?”, “HOW?!?”. I will tell you how, by the man not being able to protect themselves, because if they try they are hauled in for attacking the woman. I know a couple of guys who got hurt terribly by their female spouse, and the woman would hurt themselves and blame their guy for it. One woman would do this if he wouldn’t get her what she wanted. But I digress. Women being feminine is not a bad thing. Men being masculine isn’t a bad thing. But if you flip the scrips for both, the large majority will not support it.

You have no idea how right this is. Acadamies teach DV laws wrong, in that they teach 'factors to determine primary agressor' as, pretty much, 'factors on who has to be arrested' despite what is discovered at the scene. I got in trouble during my academy time for questioning why it was being taught like the latter, when it's supposed to be the former and have about a 50/50 ratio of men/women arrests for DV because I, I don't know, actually investigate the circumstances! Something else that I've gotten grief about - especially if the woman has a history of 'playing victim' to the Captain Save-a-Ho's who were always responding before me.

I'm bad with names, but the sergeant character? I was worried about how they would portray her. Though she's not a regular in the book series, she's been in there enough to show that she's a capable woman, smart investigator and great foil for Reacher without the need for the "I'm woman, I'm better than you" bullshit. Though, I haven't read all the books, I am curious about her backstory - something happened there. I also love that she's not afraid to call Reacher out on his 'womanizing' bullshit either while being a genuine friend. I think the series has done a great job between the director, writers and actress in really bringing this character to live - also shows that you can have great, wonderful female characters who aren't the Mary Rey Sues that are just THE BEST at everything.

They show (much like reality) is very aware that women can be physically strong, but there's a limit. Where the women shine quite well in the show is with their smarts and when they use their femininity to their advantage. Yeah, the men are much stronger, but not invincible and as such, the show remains grounded and relatable. Put all this together with a well told story, good pacing and voila - you have a winner.

I am so tired of seeing some people absolutely wholeheartedly defend shit like "Robyn Hood" as "WOW PEOPLE HATE IT BECAUSE BLACK WOMAN" No We hate it because the writing is ass, the production value sucks, the story is uninteresting and the acting is mediocre at best. There are pieces of media that have a woman of color in the lead and I adore them. Why? Because they're well written and well acted. Not because it features a woman of color. They really need to stop being online so much

I want a scene where Reacher comes across a transgender person saying he’s misogynistic, aggressive and the reason transgenders are picked on……….a 3 second shot of the look on his face would be priceless as he turns and walks away.

I remember thinking when I saw that scene in She Hulk about controlling anger thinking this would be good if he then asked her "But now you can do something about it are you gonna break anyone and everyone who ever insults you, who cat calls you, who does something wrong. What if you misjudge the situation, what if you encounter a problem without knowing all the facts, what if it's a setup. This power now means you can't do that, you have to always try to do the best you can and not lose your temper, and go off on someone who may not deserve it and even if they do that's not your call." The problem is how she hulks out and immediately controls it there was other things they were doing well then destroyed like slut shaming and double standards for women. They just mishandled it so badly, She-Hulk could've been really good the reason Buffy stands the test of time isn't doesn't talk down to anyone.

I’d like to know where the stats come from, because for streaming it’s whatever the company says? And Amazon clearly fudged numbers with RoP. I’m a bit baffled that the first 3 episodes of S2 faired better than S1 overall, considering that -imo- S1 is better. But Reacher is a great show I’m happy it’s doing well as it means they’ll do more!

Part of me is just glad that Reacher isn't played by a 5'-2" cultist. The fight scenes are fun. Reacher's overt masculinity is fun. Reacher's overt masculinity getting beat down by strong women who have been dealing with genuine toxic masculinity is also very fun. Reacher dealing with grief and PTSD is... not fun, but very real. Finlay dealing with overt racism is very not fun, but him beating the absolute tar out of those guys is.

No matter what.....the way they are going I'm sure that by the next season they'll either make it a woke mess or cancel it all together because it makes their biggest and the most expensive franchise i.e. Rings of power, look even worse
@pr9164
@pr9164 5 ай бұрын
I don't know, much like with the original Lord of the Rings, they have people in all aspects of the production that are die hard fans of the source materials. I mean, it's not like what Brooks allowed (and even cried out how great it was) for the Shannara series (but considering his recent book series, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised he would champion that drek).

Amazon isn't the producer of Reacher... only the distributor. If Amazon wants to cancel it, I'm sure NetFlix would probably love to have it... and Paramount TV is another of the production companies involved.

@@prateekkhanna5540 Well, Paramount is a big corporation, so I'd limit my answer to... Reacher seems to be relatively safe from Amazon's woke agenda. Whatever executives that Paramount assigned to it, appear to be more of the Peter Jackson and Henry Cavill mindset, to honor the original source material.

Prime, HBO, and Hulu (mainly for FX) (and also with some exceptions) are the only three subscriptions I think are worth it anymore. The diversity is there, the stories the shows tell don't feel cheesy the effects don't feel rushed and they often rely on practicals instead of cgi. The episodes are long and actually give us time with the characters and they know how to tackle hard topics well without it feeling forced. Netflix is hit or miss and makes only the decisions that will make them the most money, and Disney makes shows hypes them up pumps them out way to fast and then makes the episodes to short and not detailed enough so we get no time with the characters and relies wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to much on cgi.

Reacher does black representation right finlay and officers bakers exchanges were so intense “you’re exactly who I thought you were” after being told he’s tougher than he looks tied up brilliant. Also love the “girl bosses” seeing a heel go through a dudes eye is just great Dixon is queen and even Roscoe hated when Reacher treated her as something to protect and not someone to work with. All that to say representation was never the problem it’s the pandering for said representation if it’s not apart of the story don’t add it for brownie point. The boys is another great example it’s practically a political parody of modern times that’s a bit left leaning but any dude bro can sit down and enjoy.

And man it's tough between Reacher season 2, and the Last of us season 1 as both were my favorite show of last year. I got a physical copy of The Last of Us just for liking the show.

Let's also acknowledge The Terminal List which was another great, no messing about, action series on Amazon Prime. (in my opinion anyway). Rotten Tomatoes HATED IT (40%) but general public loved it which was an interesting sign of critics trying to keep in with the narrative and the public telling you the truth (IMDB 7.9) (Amazon 4.7/5) Honestly thought Chris Pratt wouldn't pull off the serious role but it worked - worth a watch if you liked Reacher - strong female characters, no unnecessary garbage. I hope this phase continues for a long time!
