Haha. You have to check out Oriental pearl. She is American, but she lives in Tokyo (Married a Japanese guy not long ago) . Imagine the shock when a tall blonde lady switches from English to Japanese,then you mamble something behind her back in Chinese she turns back and answers in Chinese 😂😂😂

Great video. I enjoyed it a lot, and I've subbed :) When you asked, whether foreigners react to you when you speak their language fluently, from my own experience I can tell you that the reaction is always there. I come from Croatia, but I'm a polyglot that can speak English, German, Czech, Slovak, Russian, some Finnish, and some Afrikaans. Don't ask me how I learned all those languages, but as I said, when you can speak someone's language, people are always genuinely surprised, and will always appreciate the effort.

“不敢当”。 This phrase isn't only the level of Chinese. This was used to be spoken by the ancient Chinese people. Like when someone praises or gives a good comment about you, a humble man or woman would say:"不敢当,不敢当“. They say the phrase two times to show humbleness.

XiaomaNYC has some great videos of speaking in Chinese. He spent some time in Beijing learning, and his wife is from China. While Cantonese/Mandarin are his main, he does some other languages/dialects as well. I can hear the slighest of accent at times from you. But living in San Jose, CA I've grown up with and working with people speaking languages of all kinds around me and don't really think anything of it. Probably the languages or non-native speakers I've been around the most are Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and now Chinese.

Malaysian Chinese here. Our mandarin also slightly different from mainland and taiwanese mandarin. About the stinky tofu, it's really really rare in Malaysia and I just tried it recently. I almost gag once I bite it but will try again one day. I want to believe the stinky tofu I had wasn't a good one and it's cold.

1. Yes, you do have an accent. 2. I don't at all find it surprising when an Asian person speaks without an accent - I just assume that they grew up here (either born or immigrated as a young child). If anything, I probably find it a little more surprising when someone speaks with an accent. But, I also grew up on the west coast, where there are significant Asian populations, so it was/is common to meet folks of Asian heritage who were born and raised here.

I don't speak a lick of Chinese, but if that "oo"-type sound you described [4:49] is anything at all like the "oo"-type sound like in the French word "tu", then here's the recipe to give to people who want to master that sound: (1) Purse your lips, in a sort of exaggerated "I am going to kiss you" type of way. (2) With your lips still in that, um, configuration (?), try to say "ee", as in the sound in "tweet" (IPA /i/). (3) Et voilà.

That sound is actually "eua" and is used in my second Language, which is Thai. The sound does not happen in English.

Everyone who speaks in any language has some type of identifiable accent. The first time I started to realize this is when I traveled to Boston, MA for college many years ago. I'm from the southern midwest. Everybody could tell in the first few sentences that I was from "away."

There's a shocking about Asians. We Asians are actually really good when it comes to learning foreign languages. Now, I can speak six languages in total. Chinese, English, Malay, Cantonese(dialect), Hokkien(Southern-Min language/ dialect) and a tinsy bit of Korean. It's fun for us to learn foreign languages. I learn Korean from my school, but I can only speak Korean to my friends who attend Korean classes, the rest don't even understand a single word in Korean, they just like mocking the language and giving disrespectful comments. That's the struggle that I'm currently facing with. I only know how to pronounce Korean words, but I'm Korean -deaf. Like when I hear someone speaking Korean, my brain can't even pick up a word, all I hear through my eyes is just noises. But for Cantonese and Hokkien, I almost fully mastered these two dialects, it's just some words that I'm not sure how to pronounce. So yeah, language is a mystical thing.

So awesome of you to be able to speak six languages!! If anyone wants to learn any language they need to be living in the country and put them to use..!! Some Korean words are very similar to Chinese so I’m sure you’re not far off!

4:49 What are you talking about? A lot of non-Mandarin speakers can pronounce the sound you mentioned. It's a common vowel in French, German, Hungarian, Turkish and a lot of other languages. Its the "Ü"-sound (phonetically [y]).
@Meecheer
@Meecheer 2 жыл бұрын
Ü is definitely close enough to saying “fish” in mandarin, but the mandarin word has a rising tone instead of a falling tone. ( not a teacher here lol I just looked up how to explain this)
