I think what really grates me about Lily is that she feels like what she likes/remembers HAS to be important. It's not enough that she enjoys something or fondly remembers something else - if the internet at large isn't appreciating it enough for her liking, it's a problem. Or rather, it's a problem that they enjoy something else instead of the thing SHE likes. Like yes, I'm sure there were earlier LGBTQ+ characters in cartoons, but one, they existed before the internet was as big as it currently is, so by virtue of that they will be discussed less, and two, these series were simply not as popular as Steven Universe, She-Ra, Owl House, etc. . It's not a matter of people "erasing" these characters, it's a matter of they were a random character in a not-that-popular series. That's it. It's nothing insidious.

I feel like if she was more reasonable and thoughtful as a person, she could be right about the stuff she fondly remembers. Every step on a journey is important. It's her framing that makes it so frustrating, if it's not something she likes it's not worth it.

Trans man weighing in. I'm a little insulted that Lily assumed Dion would have a dead name. That's something that you would cringe at the thought of being called and make you feel uncomfortable, not just going "oh it's so boring". Dion is clearly just a stagename and she's reading way too deeply into it. EDIT: Yes I definitely recommend Tuca and Bertie! For as much as people dunk on you for continually covering Lorch, you’re probably the best person to step in and call out her nonsense through your own nonsense (meant as a compliment). You’re able to laugh at yourself and be funny where she isn’t. You’re able to better articulate your arguments even when you go off on tangents about other arguments while Lorch can’t even keep one argument straight. And you’re a genuinely wholesome person where she is decidedly not. I came for your “Lorch doesn’t understand SU” video, and I stay for your opinions on various things. Thanks, Sai. You helped me to remember what made SU great and you’re pretty wise and wise-cracking

I don't blame Lily for not know, this was only in America. But from the 30's to the 60's we had something called the hays code. A do and don't list of what you can include in your films. Some of it was pretty obvious, like you couldn't have kids in a sexual context. But it also included things like you couldn't have interracial couples, you couldn't defile the church, and you couldn't have explicitly gay characters. That's part of why so many villains, especially goldenage villains are queer coded because after the hays code came into effect that was the only representation we could get. Well that or bury or gays.

While I agree that as a Canadian Lily probably doesn't know anything about the Hays Code, we could (and I personally do) still blame her for not doing basic research, which should be a part of her job as a youtube critic/analyst in order to prevent the spread of misinformation 🤷🏾‍♀

I'm from goddamn australia and I know what the hays code is, I learnt about it in HIGHSCHOOL. I live on the other side of the world and I know about it, Lorch lives Next door. Her being from canada is not an excuse. You'd think that if she actually cared about gay representation in media she'd learn about the history, about queer coding, and just what's even involved and the bare fucking basics process of how media is made???? the hays code is an important part of media history, period. Not even factoring queer media history. Its baffles me that her whole job is about media critisms and analysis and she doesn't even know the basics? Knowing the context of when, where and how a piece of media was made is an important factor when thinking critically about a piece of media.

@@a_d7366Also, she's on tumblr. That topic comes up pretty often in posts discussing queer rep and history in media. That doesn't even include just going into censorship and depictions of women. How can you be a critic and dissect movies/shows without knowing about the code? Especially when US media is so popular internationally and she's Canadian? Lots of youtube videos talking about queer history in cinema bring it up too. She probably does know about it but it's inconsequential to her and the narrative she's trying to push so didn't even take it into consideration.

I noticed this when I watched her video "Fandom has a race problem", and her evidence was to bring up how the most talked about characters in like 4 seperate shows were white, and thus that must mean Fandom was racist, nevermind that these shows had nothing to do with each other and probably had completely different fan bases, nevermind the audiences were probably made up of a bunch of different ethnicities, nevermind most people dont think about race 24/7 and probably base who their favorite characters are on how they're WRITTEN... God, Lily really isn't a leftist at all, is she? I've never seen a Trans Girl unironically not get what Deadnaming is. Deadnaming isn't bad because you use someone's original name. It's bad because you're rejecting their Trans identity. If someone cis just changes their name and they're fine with their old name then it's really not the same thing. But Lily just knows Deadnaming is a thing so she has to force it in like a buzzword to virtue signal that she's an ally because, if she didn't, NOTHING about her content would really feel that progressive, would it?

Hamfisted as to be borderline homophobic at best and acts like those are on par or better than ones by queer creators. I think a big reason Lilly hates lore, is because she blames lore for Wow and SU for turning into things she doesn't like. Classic World of Warcraft had a story, but like you actually have to pay attention and look for it. This is because the playable races had there own starting zones so its really hard to build a over arching plot around that. Then in mostly Cataclysm they actually told you the story up front. Not saying BC and Wrath didn't tell you the plot but Cataclysm used the lore unlike other expansions.

Straight passing an important culture bipoc queer historical thing (Though "realness" is the more fitting term). Straight passing is an important historical defense mechanism for queer people, especially bipoc queer people. You need to look into Ballroom culture and specifically the history of the "realness" category. You can still not like the idea, but to reject it completely is to ignore it's important in queer survival. In the vogue community and at it's start "realness" has been a category, both for male and female roles. They pretend to be cis gender and heteronormative to help each other survive in daily life. Please educate yourself about this subject beyond my comment. "Paris is burning" is a great documentry to start your ballroom education, but also look up specifically the history of "realness" categories in ballroom. Straight passing is a skill that was taught for the survival of Bipoc queers in the city and is an important part of queer history. PS. hope this comment makes senses and not ill willed or anything

@matt0044 I thought they stopped with Digimon after Fusion and the reunion movies. But I'm not a fan of the series to know that. @@redribbonredneck While Adventure gets the lion's share, subs of some recent season have been official. Mostly. It's weird. For Precure, every Season baring two sequels is its own thing. They can bounce around. GoPri would work towards the Disney crowd. Star Twinkle would have a semi Sci-Fi angle to work with. Huggto involve coming of age and who one wants to be, involve a not so subtle queer leaning. Heck, I personally wouldn't mind Glitter Force as an international brand (burn me at the stake but I said what I said) IF they lean back the cultural localization to something less 4kids and more balance. It's all about them taking a chance but studio heads are weird about it.

@@matt0044 I understand that each season is a stand-alone, but due to how dated a lot of them are, it'll be hard to sell to the intended audience of young girls. Even as a kid, I noticed this with some shows and was kinda turned away from it. But I was also a weird kid. Unfortunately, due to how anime marketed to kids tend to be, it would 100% go the 4Kids route if dubbed. Even the faithful Canadian dub didn't get away with it.
@matt0044
@matt0044 Ай бұрын
@@redribbonredneck Most of the animation quality could pass for today's standard if that's what you mean. The Canadian dub was at least faithful to the spirit of the original even with some of the changes like an Earthquake changed from a war. Hell, even Glitter Force wasn't a far cry in its localization of Smile since it was a very episodic season with a thin plot stretched across it. The voice acting especially made the script work with Laura Bailey being a delight. That said… the Japanese names and settings should be retained. It’s a weird back slide for a dub produced for Saban considering that Digimon has had a good track record of not changing the Earth setting to America. Seriously, you had Digimon Adventure’s Eighth Digidestined arc explicitly claim that the kids were Japanese. They lived in Odaiba. They had nicknames in the dub but their full names were shown in Episode 1 to be Japanese. So I feel this same sort of open mindedness should’ve been kept for Glitter Force. Given Anime is pretty much mainstream, dubs made with kids in mind should probably consider that even My Hero Academia is enjoyed by kids. Oh, and don’t skip any episodes. And dub the theme songs from the original so we can all sing and dance during the credits. Sorry, I went off. Basically they can make it work if they go at least 30% 4kids and 60% Saban.

I would like to say that while I do agree that forcing people into a role they feel uncomfortable being in is wrong; gender roles in of themselves are not inherently wrong. It’s a matter of cultural perspective and I actually kinda find it strange to say that they are universally a bad thing. It’s more nuanced than that. Now that said, I firmly believe people are free to pursue whatever they like when it comes to things like hobbies and career paths.

i believe gender roles are indeed a bad thing. you said it your yourself, gender ROLES, not just gender expression. femininity and mascunality can exist as concepts and aspects of self expression, without them being gender roles. If it's seen as a role, it means it's a culturally manufactured profile that gets pushed onto people since they are born, no way around it, even in the more "mild" scenarios. It will inevitably mean that you were either railroaded into it in the "harmless" cases, or inevitably cause issues if a bump in the road arrives since a default already exists in the form of roles. i would much rather have non of that, and if people naturally come to a similar outcome then so be it, great! now it's more valuable and genuine since it had no interference or external push. you truly can never know if you would be the same without said interference, and for many, they indeed wouldn't, hence why, for example, people raised in more accepting families tend to be, shocking, more accepting and vice versa. what could have otherwise been your goals or happiness in life is very hard to picture when since day you were shown babies and brides and dresses and so on as a girl, it's something you can't even measure by yourself since you will only vaguely remember it, yet it's know to influence greatly your later choices in life. but without said roles and the unavoidable issues that arise with even having roles in the first place, well, it would mean you found it for yourself instead of it just being the default you, well, defaulted to. i hope my point came across. gender expression in itself isn't damaging, but gender roles are, absolutely. Gender roles bring a blanket of performative homogeneity at best, or submission, concsious or unconcsious masking, delayed self discovery, judgement, bullying, exclusion, violence and turmoil at worst.

I will forever be a Korrasami defender, they’re my favourite. Yes I’m a little biased cus I love when characters are allowed to be queer, but genuinely I feel like with a little more development would’ve made them much better. Like what’s the alternative? Having her be with Mako? The guy that she fell in love with the literal second that she showed up with like no chemistry whatsoever? Bolin? The guy that Korra shows basically zero connection with and like nobody even likes? I feel like it’d perfect to show the audience that you don’t *have* to find love so quickly and rush into everything, and you don’t have to force yourself into finding somebody that you don’t really love, you can take your time and develop your relationships with other people. The homophobia of the show business at the time really fucked up their potential, but I think the relationship thrives much more in extended media and just in the fandom in general. Also CATRA AND ADORA AREN’T ADOPTED SISTERS!!! I’m genuinely convinced Lily just *wants* to see them make gay incest love so she just assumes that they’re related when they’re not. Shadow weaver adopted Adora when Hordak wanted her thrown away, Catra was literally just one of the thousands of children that were taken to be indoctrinated into the horde. Catra doesn’t have a family, that’s literally the point of joining the horde, you have nothing. There’s a canon poly couple that are also in the horde, are they all incest too?? Is the gay lizard doing gay incest with his gay soldier friends??? Lily just does not understand anything about queerness, she’s like 15 years behind on every progressive message ever which just makes everything she says sound incredibly pointless and heavily outdated. It’s like she just doesn’t like these shows and so she’s going out of her way to not understand anything about it. Yes Raine would be considered trans because they’re non-binary and that falls under the trans umbrella (transgender means to identify differently than your gender assigned at birth. Identifying as Non-binary falls under that umbrella term) but lumping Raine in as just “this is one of the trans ones” just totally diminishes all of the complex dynamics that these characters have in the story. Luz and Amity are now “the gay ones”, Raine is “the trans one”, etc etc. but it’s not as if Lily cares about exploring complex character relationships and character dynamics. Owl House is popular so it’s bad, She-Ra is popular so it’s bad, *Steven Universe* is popular so it’s bad. Also is Lily Orchard’s entire consensus on this just “Gay rep should never strive to be on the same level as straight rep, they should just be quirky side characters based only on stereotypes and never let them be in more than 2 episodes at a time”??? That’s fucking insane and honestly makes her sound so fucking homophobic. But then she also likes Hazbin Hotel, where there are more gay characters than straight ones??? Her whole worldview is so inconsistent and stupid, she can’t comprehend her own dumbass opinions. I fuckin hate Lily Orchard 😭😭😭

"Like what’s the alternative? Having her be with Mako?" I mean, to be fair, she didn't HAVE to have a boyfriend/girlfriend. Just because aang and katara were a thing, it doesn't mean every avatar we get to know after that HAS to have a love interest on screen. I could also say that if she ended up with nobody, it teaches a similar thing to what you described, or even better, you may think you are love with the first person you come across, but maybe it's just not the right person for you, and maybe it's not even the right moment for a relationship alltogether, you don't HAVE to be on the look for one, it's fine to be single.
@Shuffles_Art
@Shuffles_Art Ай бұрын
@@magical571 that is very true tbh, it is definitely an option to just not have her fall in love with someone and I didnt really give that much thought, but you also have to admit that it’s very unlikely that a story will just *not* have a primary love interest in it. It’s unfortunately just a huge part of pretty much any story-driven narrative, the main character always ends up with somebody at the end of it all. So going under the assumption that Korra *has* to end up with somebody, the only real options are either Mako, Bolin or Asami, unless you just bring in a new character or have Korra branch out to go fall in love with someone that isn’t a part of the main cast.

Partners as a term exists far beyond romantic connotations, regardless of anything. Someone speaking of a partner may not actually be talking about a ROMANTIC partner. And its unisex. You wouldn't call your agender romantic partner a girlfriend or a boyfriend. Because theyre not either. Theyre your romantic partner. Also look up queerplatonic relationships. Partner suits those relationships better than the explicitly, implicitly romantic boyfriend or girlfriend. If you think a term should be exclusive, Sai, maybe take some time to educate yourself on the people who may identify with it who aren't under your consideration. (Also 'passing' is ultimately just erasure. I am uncomfortable and distressed everytime i am misgendered, but i am NOT safe to come out widely. Didn't she say she doesn't like straight people taking partner because it was a way to signal to other LGBT folk that you're LGBT without openly saying it, I don't think she's opposed to using partner in queer circles, she's opposed to straights using it because it's way more socially acceptable to have a partner of the opposing sex than of the same sex/non-binary partner.

Normally I'm down for your lily take downs, but I will admit i think you were leaning... wayy to hard into the canadian animation sucks angle... like you can't sit there and say that no slop or bad animation would be shown on US networks when there have been plenty of american made shows that look like crap that have been aired.

Yeah idk if she was joking but if she was genuine, she just looks like a hypocrite since she literally critique lily on this exact ting in Japan.

@@Lemoncakelover678 mmmm if i try to be fair though, for many of us (i'm speaking from a south american perspective btw), the "good" shows on tv at the time were either american, french or japanese, and the canadian ones that did get exported were pretty much filler. So if better ones existed, well, we only got to see the repetitive teen dramas with that samey yet distinctive "flat" style. The only way to know otherwise, would be to now, as an adult, to google "canadian animated cartoons of the 2000s" and start binge watching. Like, i wouldn't blame someone who grew up during that period to have the perspective of canadian cartoon=bad. keyword, someone from that time. if someone who's like, i don't know, 19 today? were to say that, then i would certainly be confused since they have access to so many options and aren't cursed with coming home after school to find two of the three available cartoon channels being stuck rerunning canadian filler. (blessed be that third channel, that in my case would always run saint seiya at those times lol). I don't know how old are you, but when netflix or other means of choosing what to watch and when weren't a thing, the canadian animation that got exported was cursed (and notice that i said the canadian animation that got exported, not necesarily the canadian animation that got made) and it only made your tv time sad lol. you would be there wanting to watch anything from witch to sailor moon to invader zim or courage, yet you were cursed with another rerun of 6teen (which, if you like it, more power to you, but for many it really was just filler they rather skip but had no option to).

@magical571 and that's a perfectly valid take if we ignore any context of Canada's animation industry being quite younger and not as well funded as some parts of the American industry. but when Lily is talking about characters and character work, defaulting to "but Canadian animation bad XD" isn't as strong or good a take one could make. fun fact: a few of those popular French shows were actually collaborations between French and Canadian studios.

The only Canadian cartoon worth a damn was Night Hood because it was basically Canadian Lupin The Third, and even at that the animation quality of Night Hood overall as an adult it makes me want to jam tungsten rods into my eyes.

I'm a bit of a Moviebob stan. Lord knows that he is nothing like Lily. At least not now. He was a bit like her before but lord knows that he's done major growing up with his Big Picture series being a very good series of time capsules in that regard. He's a boomer but as good as a boomer can get really.

I caught on to the Kora/Asami hinting early on in season 2, they shared a certain look together and I was like “Wait was that intentional? Cause it seems like they are hinting towards chemistry between the two.” I didn’t watch past season 2 cause I fell off after the season finale but I was happy to hear they made it happen at the end of the series. Just because it confirmed that I didn’t misread that scene.
