This video really point out the biggest flaw of Re:Zero. It had a horrible beginning that makes no sense and doesn't give Subaru anything to make him relatable or likeable.
@ronantheronin3521Ай бұрын
Really!? He had NOTHING that made him relatable or likable? Dude, I don't know what paint you're huffing, but Subaru has been very charming since the first episode. He is goofy and says cringey jokes sure, but he goes out of his way to help people in need when he knows that they are in trouble. Subaru helped out Emilia, not only to repay her, but because she was also the first genuinely kind person he met in Lugunica. Subaru and Emilia are the embodiment of selflessness and insecurity, they are both awkward, they are both undoubtably kind and hardworking. Those 2 are peas in a pod.

@@ronantheronin3521 as an anime only watcher, I got nothing from Subaru that made him a unique character. You could switch him with Naruto and nothing would be different. Subaru does things, but everything feels like it's done for plot progression and convenience only. Instantly falls in love with Emilia, why? Because plot. Let's compare to another MC, Tanjiro from Yumetsu no Kaiba. From episode 1 we learn that Tanjiro is the oldest son, therefore fulfilling the paternal role in his family. He is talented and respected by others, he isn't flaky and has a strong moral compass. The best part is that all of this is shown through normal interactions with others, before he has to start saving people or risking his life to save his sister. With Subaru we didn't get any of that basic introduction, so when he acts we don't know who he is, we just see him doing stuff. Most of this is because Re:Zero is an isekai so when we meet Subaru he is in a place where nobody knows him, so it's hard to make these simple, but important establishing exposition points. Let's compare to another isekai protagonist from Youjo Senki this time. In the first episode we see Tanya and she is pretty much like Subaru, doing things like praying, yelling at her subordinates, destroying enemies, etc. But it all has the same issue that Re:Zero does. We don't know her, so it all feels like she is doing things because that's what is needed for the story. But Youjo Senki takes its second episode to introduce their MC. Afterwards we now understand why she prays, why she doesn't tolerate incompetence and why she is fighting in a War. Suddenly there is logic behind her actions and they're not just things that happen because the writer wrote them. Let's look at Emilia from Re:Zero, she doesn't have the same problem as Subaru. She is also an established character, we understand her situation and she makes sense as a character.

@@willpina First of all, Subaru's love for Emilia is the most important plot point in this story. This is the reason why he ended up in this world. Secondly, his backstory is explained in the second season. It is at this moment that we better understand the protagonist who previously might have seemed annoying. Thirdly, Emilia's past is unknown until a certain point and much about her is a secret, so you're contradicting yourself. Everything you said doesn't make any sense. You're asking for the plot to be thrown in your face without any build-up.

@@willpina What do you mean we have no characterization of Subaru at the beginning? When he decides to help Emilia thinking "she is the type of person that will waste her life away" isn't it that he feels bad about people sacrificing everything without having something in return, or when he talks about Ram about the blue and red ogres story, that he finds that people that self-sacrifice are commendable but are ultimately not entirely in the right? Or the entire trip in the capital, where we learn that he hate being left out and that is one of the reason why he embarass himself ultimately? Or his speech on episode 18 where we unveils a new part of him, his self-hatred coming from his lack of competence and his lack of effort? And for the topic of why Subaru likes Emilia, is it so hard to see? Firstly when he meets her, it's just that he finds her attractive, nothing less, nothing more, then she saves him even if she didn't have too. Then on the first loop of the second checkpoint, he grows more fond of her in these five days, but the real moment that he starts liking her for real imo is when he is at the end of his wits in this arc and she conforts him (lap pillow), the man literally says "stop doing that, or I'll fall in love". Also if you have seen season 2, there is a possible connection with Satella, but I won't expand more if you haven't seen it.
