Sorry about sub alerts playing over Karl talking for 2 points in the video. Usually I have alerts on a separate audio track, but they ended up being on the same one as Karl's and I wasn't able to disable them midstream with how I had things set up. Also Karl lives in Australia so he wasn't perfectly synced at times, but my editor has made adjustments to account for it.

I feel like this needs to be said though, in reference to the comment about, "oh, 6 hours on Zelda is isn't good anymore" - this only applies to speedrunning, and it only applies to specific top-tier play. Never be discouraged because of how long it takes you to beat a game, or how many tries, or anything. Games are about having fun. If your fun is in speedrunning or high scores, then go for it and do your best. But don't be discouraged by what other people do - they'd be there to cheer you on the whole way as long as you're having a good time.
@PointsofData2 жыл бұрын
Randomized runs for Ocarina regularly run 6 or so hours, while Twilight Princess low% is in the double digits. Definitely depends on the category, and of course your level of play. No ones gonna bite your head off for not reaching top 10 your first play through.
@blitzbolzen6798 Жыл бұрын
I agree to an extent, if you are going for high scores or speed runs it is a competition so if the WR is 3.5 hours and you are getting 6.2 hours then that’s not good compared to what everyone else is doing Now if you are just playing for fun or “Casual” than your time doesn’t matter at all

It's so fascinating watching King of Kong after everything we know about Billy Mitchell has been revealed and key moments in the documentary that are recontexualized with that knowledge. Billy just comes across as such an oblivious coward and while documentaries uses editing tricks, the producers are adamant that Billy Mitchell was an even bigger asshole that they had to edit around to make him more likeable. Otherwise, King of Kong would have been a darker film.

@StevieViscuso2 жыл бұрын
I've been looking at the timeline, what was being said, and listening to interviews Steve Wiebe did last year, and I am really uncomfortable about something. When King of Kong came out, Walter Day publishes on the Twin Galaxies site "The Significance of Tim Sczerby's DK Record" where he points out that the film had portrayed Billy Mitchell as someone who couldn't handle his record being beaten, when in fact it had already been beaten for some years and he didn't seem bothered. That all makes sense until you find a post from 2007 from Tim Sczerby where Tim suggests he does not believe it is possible to get a million, and won't until he sees it in person. I'm sure when Billy made his high score in 1982 he used all of his tricks and techniques, and with Donkey Kong having a maximum number of levels, that for the few points he remembers losing, he was probably as close to the highest theoretical score. When Tim Sczerby turns up nearly 18 years later to claim a higher score and it's only an improvement of 4,900, that was only going to reinforce the idea that there are not many more points to be gained. Billy doesn't appear to be that worried about Tim's score, but when Steve sends in the Double Donkey Kong tape, that's a jump of 68,000. I don't have any doubt that when Tim heard the record had gone by that much, he wanted to know how. To quote the Tim Sczerby post: "From what I understand, both Billy and Steve only play behind closed doors with no first hand witnesses and submit only video tapes of these games. Not one of these players has so much as even offered a single game playing tip like I did... and plenty of people "HAVE" seen me play in first had (sic). If a technique does exist for a higher score, these people sure as hell are not going to let me know....they don't want the competition." It's true Steve was a garage played, but he is sending his videos to Twin Galaxies, and that means there is a genuine conflict of interest if Billy is able to see what Tim cannot. According to Robert Mruczek in the year after the Double Donkey Kong record, Billie submitted a tape to him where he scores 1,014,000 but it was never formally submitted to Twin Galaxies so it wasn't recognised. (Who hasn't sent a video to the chief referee of them beating a word record for the hell of it?) and even if it it was true, he didn't cheat, MAME or not, how does Billy suddenly find nearly 140,000 points. Billy then gets the public 933,900 that same year. The clear conflict of interest in the relationship between Billy and Twin Galaxies is just not something which should have been ignored. In an interview Jul 13, 2020, Steve Wiebe said that when he submitted the million point tape, there had been the suggestion that Billie Mitchell had also submitted a tape to Twin Galaxies shortly afterwards, and that the plan was to say they had simultaneous scores, and it's only after he began to protest that he got his in first that they appeared at his house. Memory issues aside, that means, assuming Steve Wiebe's technique had been appropriated by Billy, there could have been an alternative reality where Billy does not have the relationship with Twin Galaxies, there is no second tape, no visit, and Billy is left in the same position as Tim: Wondering how this is possible. This would mean there was no film, no increase in interest on the Donkey Kong high score, and Steve is Steve's only competition for many years. I mean, it could all be innocent suddenly decided to reclaim the record several years after it was beaten knowing how to get more points than Tim thought possible, but to be honest, this is why conflicts of interest are avoided.
@marymcmanus18772 жыл бұрын
Tim was able to score in the mid 900k range in 2004/05. Tim was able to break 1 million by the time the film was released. Tim scored a verifiable and complete video of a 1,024,000 performance about a year after the films release. Higher than Steve's first million. Tim was kept in the dark and not even notified about the film until the day it opened despite being the actual 1982 arcade record breaker and record holder during the time contemporary events were depicted in the so-called "documentary" film. Steve had connections with the film makers and colluded With TG to cover up Tims initial score so as to re-write the history to benifit only a few select insiders both in terms of PR and money. Steve was in on it as he knew he was getting paid so he was highly incentivized.

The absolute best part about this documentary is near the end, he walks past Wiebe and tries to sound like a prophet. Instead he insulted himself and admitted that he knows he wasn't good enough. He knows deep down he is a fraud, that is why he tries to hard to prove it wrong and relive his glory days. Video games are meant to be played in a competitive environment, under pressure, organized, where you have to perform, literally on demand. And when you do that, you have far more credibility then someone who says "oh I did that last week. No matter how good you play Tennis, no matter how good you play golf, If you don't play when you have to play, if you don't play when the pressure is on, you're really not good enough. - Billy Mitchell
@thecianinator3 жыл бұрын
When I saw King of Kong I thought Billy Mitchell was playing a villain on purpose, like the whole thing was contrived and cute. Then I heard that the filmmakers really struggled in the edit to make Billy Mitchell come off as _less_ of a bad guy, and I was only confused. Surely that would mean Billy Mitchell in real life approached cartoon character levels of being a dumb asshole, but how could a real human being be that much of a dumb asshole? Lo and behold, we have the current legal situation making an asshole out of my younger, naive self for having such an unrealistic amount of faith in humanity.

Ego, money and image. Billy saw Steve as a credible threat to his brand and that pissed him off. He came absolutely out of nowhere and started kicking ass at the game and Billy panicked because this ‘Video Game Player of the Century’ persona was suddenly being threatened by some engineer dude who didn’t have the history with the scene like he did. When you’re on the top for so long and people start to worship you, having someone challenge that spotlight and be a genuine credible threat makes you turn sour instantly. There’s also the fact that the other competitive players present were willing to suck up to Billy and act as his lackies and that really just paints the entire scene as having this cult like atmosphere with Billy on top

Karl brings up such a good point at 33:23..I mean, I don't watch speedrunners or gamers in general because they're "the best" or whatever..I watch them because they are fun people to watch, if someone comes across as a jerk why watch them, I'd rather watch a content creator that makes me smile and have a good time. They could be the worst in the world at a game, but if they bring entertainment those skills don't matter.
@squirrel_killer-3 жыл бұрын
I think there is another side to this that only exists at the high end of play. When I say high end I mean the three primary competitive scenes (speed, PvP, and Score) or simply seeking to hone your skills for challenge runs or to achieve a degree of mastery for its own sake. If you're a score runner or a speed runner you want to watch the best players. Regardless of their entertainment value, to see how to get better. Same for challenge runs where you look for new techniques. If you just want to get properly good at a game you need to watch and dissect the game play of better players, and unless we're entering into glitching a game to all hell and breaking it over your knee through exploits, you need to also find people whose play style is close enough to your own to learn from, it is very difficult to learn from the play style of someone who plays fundamentally different than you, except how to counter it. This results in sometimes having to watch some really toxic people for studying purposes just because you share a play style. I tend to use what I call a "parrying mentality" in my play, which means I often need to watch players who excel in defensive play and in finding and exploiting weak points. So if the players who have those play styles and are at a level high enough I can learn from them are kinda shitty people, I need to suffer through whatever their personality is like to see their game play to learn, like wise I might have to pass up on watching someone more pleasant because their play style just isn't compatible with mine for learning purposes. Though you could always learn to have multiple styles to use. Now if you aren't studying the game play of multiple players across multiple sessions to learn from them and how they adapt to situations, there is the chance you are just watching someone because they are the best, in which case you can get away with simply watching their best runs. For example I don't personally like EnNopp112, but he holds the WR in a category in a game I care about currently so I will watch his run. Then pretend he doesn't exist until he sets a new WR.
@atomiccritter64923 жыл бұрын

Finally someone bigger than Billy has taken a stand and Billy cant compete. He will back down and he will finally fade into obscurity.
@januszkurahenowski28603 жыл бұрын
When you are being sued it's worse to talk about him than if you're not being sued since you might be giving them evidence of your malice and other things. So it's not like you don't care if you're involved in a lawsuit.

@medes5597 Жыл бұрын
Billy explains that he drives to all local stores every week to make sure his hot sauce is correctly displayed (which isn't uncommon for people with local products, as insane as Billy is) making sure the display is tidy, pulled forward, etc. If you look he's not stocking anything. He's just rearranging the shelf to be more aesthetically pleasing for customers.

When I first heard about Billy Mitchel I thought he sounded amazing...until I watched King of Kong. Even though it the documentary made it look like Billy was the bad guy, honestly, they didn’t really have to try at all how much of an asshat he was. Years later I found out his score that topped Petes was a lie, and it was the vhs recording that got him from the documentary. JUSTICE
@medes5597 Жыл бұрын
The people who made the documentary said they actually struggled making Billy look like less of a villain because people wouldn't believe how much of an actual villain he was. The film went through six months of various Billy Mitchell edits and reshoots (a lot of the stuff in Billy's hometown, with the sauce and Q*Bert machine was post shooting reshoots) to try and make him look better. It was apparently super difficult to make Billy look like a remotely likeable person. The director talked about how hard it was.

To me it came across like for Steve they would not accept anything that he did unless there was no way to avoid it and even made him fly half way across the country to play at their place, on their machine, under a time limit, in order to not just dismiss it immediately, but Billy wouldn't even bother to show up at his local spot to play live. He just came to gloat because he knew that he was allowed to just drop a tape that he had all the time in the world to do with nobody around, and that we now know was rigged anyway, and nobody was going to do anything but accept it at the time.

A decade ago I speedran Portal. My best time ever was a 13th place, and now that same time is around 380th. I find it so funny that Silly Bitchell would think that "no one has even gotten close" to him when people were already ahead of him, and that was before people *REALLY* understood how to break games down to run them. I ran GLITCHLESS and the time was still optimised by MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES in a sub 20 run.

Phony virtue signaling a tits finest. Those two examples are just the foundation the scripting the film was based on. Steve Wiebe became a gaming hero to me after I watched The King of Kong. I messaged him here and there on Facebook back in the day, and I still wish him a happy birthday every year. Back in the day, I started a small Facebook group called “Wiebe Gamers”, and I bravely invited Steve to join. He said it was “surreal” 😂 But that’s the kind of genuine guy that he is. Between him and Hank Chien, those are the two guys I root for when it comes to Donkey Kong.
