as a woman ive always known that ill never change my last name. my mom was an extremely intelligent woman in her home country, but could not afford college and had to work. she uprooted her life and came to america, where she met my father and was awfully abused by him. when she was pregnant with me, she escaped and gave me her last name when i was born. she struggled to raise me as a single mom, but thanks to her and the disciplined mindset that she instilled in me, ive been able to accomplish a great deal. i attend an ivy league university now, and conduct neuroscience research with one of the best scientists in the field. im on the path to becoming a physician by attaining an MD or MD PhD. i think of my accomplishments as OUR accomplishments, and when i receive my degrees, accolades, publications, or even being address as dr. X, id like to keep my moms last name as an homage to everything that we have accomplished and overcome. when i have children, i dont mind giving them my husbands last name or hyphenating. but if someone isnt able to understand my desire to retain my last name, i cant be with them

My dad had only my sister & I. When we were young he passed away, since 13yrs old I knew I wanted to go my whole life with my dads last name. I got soo lucky to find a husband who respects, understands & loves that I have my late dads last name & my husbands. 100% agreed. That was one of the biggest red flags (but not the only) I ignored going into my marriage. I asked my fiancé what he would think if I kept my name and he was against it, then I asked what if he changed his name to mine. He said he would call off the marriage and would never do it, he never took even a second to consider it. Looking back that pretty much set the tone of the relationship. It was never a partnership, we were never equals. I will never lose my individuality/accomplishments again.

I probably do things my grandparents don't approve of, I don't have to live under their shadow, I have my own life, but I wouldn't insult their memory by claiming I'm doing it *for* them. My uncle once tried to use something I said in a different context to justify leaving his wife to bunk up with a young woman half his age that he had been flirting with over the internet who he never even met in person, and I was sooo pissed. I was like, "Leave your wife or don't, it's got nothing to do with me, but if you're going to do it, at least own your own decision. Don't put it on me." FYI the thing he tried to use to justify it was a blog post I wrote about the importance of acknowledging what your emotions were trying to say. What I meant was about listening to your emotions to help identify needs in your life that you're lacking so you can address those needs. What I didn't mean was to blindly follow your emotions at any given moment. But I guess he was torn about it, read my post, and messages me to tell him about how his post helped him make a decision because he had fallen in love with a girl online. I chewed him out a new one and told him to leave my name out of it, and told him how inappropriate it was to put it on me when I was trying to get through my own parents going through a messy divorce while I was still living at home with both of them. In the end he apologised to me and didn't end up leaving his wife. But at least I was still alive to object to my name being used in that way.

Honestly, I guess you could say I am fatphobic. I watched how miserable my mom was over 300 lbs. I saw myself creeping over a ten year period to 207. I do have genetics against me: under 5 ft, thyroid removed, heart disease and poor cholesterol in my family. I keep working every day to lose weight. Currently I'm around 192. I'll be thrilled to get down to 180. Still overweight but better than before.

A woman who has built a strong professional career under her 'maiden' name, or even a career as a artist, author, what have you, will not want to change her name to her husband's. Sometimes it is also a strong attachment to the family name. My mother is often sad that there is no one left of her family name and wishes she'd have kept it. I feel that hyphenating is a sound alternative.

Yeah, and it should also be added that women taking their husband's last name is culture dependent. It's not done in Spain, for instance.

I think hyphenating is a sound alternative for the woman, but I generally recommend against hyphenating children’s last names, unless you are from a culture where that’s the common practice. Giving your children hyphenated names just pushes the decision off onto your daughter. If she grows up as Sarah Smith-Jones, is she supposed to become Sarah Smith-Jones-Thompson when she gets married? What if she marries someone who also has a hyphenated last name? They’ll be the Smith-Jones-Thompson-Davis family? Or, more likely, your daughter will have to make the choice you refused to make. This is not a problem for Mexicans and other cultures where hyphenating last names is common, because they already have a solution to for this problem: Women drop their mothers’ last names when they get married. But for people from other cultures who make the decision for feminist reasons, I think it just delays the inevitable. Still, there’s nothing wrong with Mom having the surname Smith-Jones and the rest of the family just having Jones.

In regards to the fat positivity, I found the community so accepting and caring, which made me accept myself, which then made me feel comfortable about losing weight because it stopped being a vicious style, but then as soon as I lost the weight I became fat phobic, how can people be so hypocritical? I think it's jealousy and control, "you need to stay as you are so that I don't feel bad about being overweight/obese" That's the only thing I can put it down too

Dude…it’s not fat phobic to lose weight. There’s not a hidden meaning in loosing weight. Just get healthy. I’ve lost 52 pounds in the last 9 months I gained over Covid and from a job switch. My fibromyalgia is WAY better, my clothes actually fit and I’m m off all but one med. but yeah I must be the crazy one. @@brookereed7663 just start it. There’s no better time then now. Don’t worry about it to much. I know for me I would feel really guilty if I ate something bad. Which would cause me to want to eat more. But just know there’s always room for improvement. Personally for me I used MyFitnessPal, but I know thats not for everyone. So like counting calories or macros. Set a certain amount of steps you want to get. ( you said you work third shift, so maybe find a way to squeeze that in, but if its not going to work thats alright). Really figure out if your actually hungry or just thirsty. They don’t seem like it would be that hard to tell the difference, but sometimes for me my body would be dehydrated and I took that feeling as hunger. Also weigh yourself weekly, it really helps to see your progress. If not just see other things, like how you feel, how clothes fit you etc. DO NOT let a set back ruin your progress. If you gain a pound in a week (which most likely isn’t fat) Don’t overthink about It. I know it can make you feel like you have failed. But trust me you haven’t. I wish you the best in your journey. Theres so much more to it. But just the biggest thing is do not worry about it. ❤️

I’ve lost around 100 pounds I gained from extreme traumas, anxiety and stress. I’ve been in counseling for a few years and only thing I’ve done as a dietary or lifestyle change is gave up soda. I can’t work out alot due to current damage in feet, ankles, knees, hips and back. 40 years in retail wearing heels but at least I’m working on healing. Losing weight is part of my healing journey. I remember dozens of cartoons and shows from the 90s and 2000s that had episodes that taught kids that yes puberty feels scary, but it's normal and everyone feels that way at some point in their teenage years, that these feelings are only momentary and will pass and everyone knows all this to be true. My husband and I had a long conversation on what we should do about our last names once we got married. Since we are the only child that can hold onto / pass on our last names as family lines, it was very important for both of us. However, we both come from somewhat broken families where we did not share the same last names as our siblings so it was very important for us as a ‘family’ to have the same last name. How we came to the conclusion was his (step)father, after adopting him and adopting his name has been nothing but supportive and in his life. Where as my father had no input or contribution to my upbringing. His closeness to his father was something I wanted to honor since my own father did not make that kind of effort in my own life.

I so enjoyed the conversation about who is the breadwinner. I grew up with my grandparents born in '29 and '38. My papa made good money and put my grandma into nursing school (after asking what she wanted to do). He was worried about what would happen if something happened to him. They had 5 kids. He worked, she cared for the kids, and went to school. St some point, someone asked him how he would feel if she made more money than him. He responded by saying that they had both worked for her to make money, whether it be more or less than him. He did end up having health issues and going on disability and her being the breadwinner. Neither were upset. He loved helping raise his grandkids and making dinner for his wife. It was teamwork and forethought, and it worked for them and helped make them happy, which is the important thing. My grandma loves her career so much that she still works (in her 80s) ebvem though she doesn't have to.

Well, I guess I am fat phobic... I was pre-diabetic, with PCOS, HTN, Hyperlipidemia, CAD, and Morbid Obesity! I lost 140lbs on purpose! I am no longer on Metformin, my blood pressure medication has been cut in half, my Cholesterol us down to 165 and my triglycerides are down to 75, So they have cut my crestor in half! I feel so much better mentally and physically... So I will be fat phobic all day long!!

As regards the last name thing…the number of hoops that need to be jumped through to legally change your name is insane. All ID’s need to be changed. Government agencies need to be notified. Everyone that has the original info needs to be notified. It’s just a huge pain in the bu*t! Give the kids that fathers name, fine, but the wife is an individual, not an extension or, as was the original intent, property, of the man.

As someone from Puerto Rico (and given the fact that this happens in Latin America and Spain as well) I´ve nver understood why the woman has to take her husband´s last name. I am married now 4 years and haven’t legally changed my name. I’m legally married, I proudly use my husband’s last name in my day to day life, but I just haven’t sent in the many documents and done the steps required to legally take on my husband’s last name. I think the last name thing is very dependent on where youre from. Where I'm from, the woman always keeps her last name and it would be considered kinda weird to go out of your way to change your last name, so cultural norms and traditions really influence your perspective on that.

so true... I was treated practically like Hitler when I explained my reasons why I had decided to POSTPONE my first covid vaccine (not like I will never do it, but like, I'm going to wait a bit). Apparently, people died BECAUSE OF ME (I had full remote work, and went little out, always with face-mask on), and I should be in prison. When I told her I had people in my family that had died because of covid, and I wasn't by any means disregarding how dangerous this virus is, or the usefulness of the vaccine, she disregarded it as "everyone has stories like that". Being in this situation and seeing all our friends keeping quiet, I decided to leave the meeting, and while I was picking up my things, I overhead how she was tearing up, telling her story of sbdy she knows that ALMOST DIED of covid, and how scary that was for her (yeah, the same girl that disregarded my family deaths, such an hypocrite). I always felt somewhat scared of sharing my personal view and why I didn't want the vaccine yet, and this nightmarish day unluckily confirmed my fears

In my late 20’s I gained ALOT of weight and it led to a tremendous amount of health problems (and this is all while I was dealing with a new diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis and symptoms of said disease) that led to many hospitalizations. Thank God my dr was a much older woman who was not afraid to tell me I was morbidly obese and that some weight loss could help most of my issues. Within a year I had lost 100 lbs and was able to completely get off 80% of my medications. To this day I have kept it off and even with my MS issues, I still don’t have the cholesterol issues, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and the heart issues. Long story short, I guess I’m fat phobic because I never want to experience those weight related things again!!

So, when I moved into a complex in southern California, I was one of two white women in the complex. I loved my neighbors! And my neighbors, realizing I might be a little unaware in certain situations, really did look out for my safety. But, the memory I'm thinking of involves a big game of Dominoes at a BBQ after id lived there about a year or so. The men were watching a boxing event in the other room, while the women were at the kitchen table playing dominoes. I won, not just by a little, and, very meekly, slid my last domino out with a quiet, "domino." Tajia said, as she slid my Domino back to me, "Oh no, Girl! You whooped our a$$es. You know how we do it!" I was mortified. Of course I knew. But, I'm a white woman! When I hesitated, she yelled to my boyfriend, "Your woman is a little b&$ch!" She was, of course, laughing. He looked at me, and shrugged. So I did it. I slammed my Domino down and declared, "N&$ga, pay me!" All five of the women busted up laughing. She said, "There you go! You own that sh$t!" I still cringed at the thought that I'd said something so wrong, but it became a joke in the quad.. my neighbors continued get a good laugh from it for months! So, I really love the fact that you say, as long as it's not a hard derogatory statement, you couldn't care less if a white person uses that word.

My best friend didn’t take her husbands last name, but in her case I understand why. His family was absolutely horrible to her. Called her nasty names, told her she was going to hell, and much more. Her husband honestly considered changing his last name to hers because her family is more of a family to him than his own. On the breadwinner question: I am the breadwinner in my marriage but that was never the focus. I have a much more difficult degree and a much more difficult job. But if he did make more money it wouldn’t have ever mattered to me. My husband provides in so many other ways.

I have a little bit of P envy, but that's because it would just be so much easier 🤣 I was a total "tomboy" growing up (and got told by a cashier the other day that that is no longer a thing...??), played sports, hate pink, loved being unique, and got along with the guys almost better than other girls. This caused me to briefly question if I were gay. Very briefly...because teens are still figuring out who they are afterall. It didn't take long to "grow out of it". I'm so proud to be a woman, and I hate that womanhood is being taken from us, and/or being degraded. I realize I'm just a woman, with some "masculine" traits....but I'm a WOMAN. I just had an experience where because I am white, I am not allowed privacy, or I am a karen. I was in a gym locker room for females. Luckily, it wasn't a transwoman at least. But a Hispanic woman when I asked her to Please not record tiktok's in the locker room because I wanted to change, Started screaming at me snapping at me and telling me that I am a Karen. I was bewildered. There was even a sign inside of the room that said no cameras were allowed in this facility. She was laughing at me making fun of me... The manager of the club came in who happened to be black. And also a woman so she could enter the locker room... Basically said no you cannot record in here. But then this girl starts crying her eyes out because she got told no, And she started making up bs that I was somehow harassing her, And being mean. I just wanted privacy and I asked for it politely. The black manager then appeased the Hispanic woman by whispering to her "You know how they are just don't do it when she's around." The manager wouldn't even let me explain my side of what happened. Basically, I got karen'd by a karen. And I feel really bad for my aunt karen cause she's a super sweet lady. But God is amazing and guides me where i'm supposed to go... I instead joined a gym that costs a $180/mo and is LUXURY .Trash can't afford that. No matter the color of the trash's skin. Capitalism for the win. Hilarious side note: The girl recording and fake crying/lying, was very overweight, maybe 5foot 250lb, and spent more time in the lockerroom recording herself than working out. And the reason why she wouldn't move to an area where people weren't changing, is bc she wanted the lockers in the background so her followers know she's "working out." this is super common, my mom is really white, blonde, beautiful woman. I am mixed with Native American so I don’t experience it as much, but she has experienced serious bullying from women of color especially in the last few years. I don’t know why they think it’s OK, but I noticed a serious attitude from certain Hispanic and black girls, and most of my friends are Mexican, and I love them so much, But there’s certain women that seem to be a little racist, and I mean racist towards white women. And the whole karin thing, it’s being used way too much where someone is just standing up for themselves and then they be come a “karen” . there are real Karens, but just because you’re a white woman asking a person of color to stop filming in the locker room? that is so ridiculous. It’s bullying and these certain women of color think it’s OK to do. And I assume a lot of it goes on when they are together without their white friends. Again most of my friends are Hispanic, and I’m Native American, but I have witnessed this definitely, and it needs to stop.

About the last name business, it might be appropriate in certain cases for a woman to keep her last name. Such as her being professionally well known by her last name. It can be very difficult to rebrand. Not only in name fame situations like being a best selling author, news anchor, celebrity, elected official, etc... But medical professionals as well, like doctors/dentists who build clientele with their last name. It might be more difficult and worth a conversation. I know in my profession, changing my last name was quite an expense and not an easy process. Just a minor point, but I thought it was worth mentioning, as I seriously considered keeping my name. I also had a great attachment to my last name because I was adopted at 6 years old and remember my last name changing and “officially” becoming part of my family with that change. But in the end I decided that I want the same name as my children.

I wasn’t that heavy but after an accident left me in a wheelchair I gave up on working out. Before my injury I was very fit, loved running but I can’t do that anymore. I kept making excuses for myself like well I’m in a wheelchair, one day I saw a bunch of fit guys online working out in their wheelchairs & it just flipped a switch for me. I had to start exercising again. Also when I saw red pill content. I needed those facts to wake up & realize this body positivity “health at all sizes” is complete BS. But seeing red pill facts about body weight/ health. Made me wake up & look at myself in the mirror. Now I’ve been working out & eating healthier, losing weight, feeling better & getting more confidence.

I also think it’s a loyalty thing, if I married Mr. Smith, the day before I would say I am erica (maiden name) . but once you make that commitment, going by Mrs. Smith signifies that you’re taken, that you have made a commitment to a man and that you want to be loyal to him. I hate to say this, but I almost feel like women who don’t take their man’s last name, don’t want to appear married to the average person. Which makes me feel like they’re not going to be loyal, or they just want to seem single for attention or validation. If you can’t make a commitment to someone’s last name, how could you expect them to make a commitment to your marriage and being your partner for life? He had an undiagnosed condition that caused him a lot of emotional turbulence for years, which rolled down my way. I stayed, and I helped. His mother in law moved in because she was chronically ill. I take care of her, too. I make sure I am called Mrs. that way everyone knows I am married. I don't wear rings because mine were stolen and I wanted to put the money into better use. He. Doesn't wear his ring either, because it doesn't fit per his illness. Those things are so trivial. We respect each other so much that we take do care for each other. We also are deeply connected to God and our relationships with Jesus Christ. Taking a name is the current social fad. It certainly doesn't mean a much as passionate commitment through undying love. To think of our marriage as anything less is a lie, especially when 50% end in divorce and 20-30% don't even get married. A marriage must be judged on it's fruits. Not on waivering social norms.

I think the response to "Is it a red flag if a woman wants to be the bread winner in the family?" hangs on the word "want". I don't think it's a problem if a woman is the bread winner (my wife makes more than I do and it's not a problem for me at all), but if it's her goal it may be a cause for concern that she may need to take a long hard look at her priorities and what's shaping them; I don't think it would be healthy for a man to hold that as a priority either. It seems so odd to me to be like, "No, I don't want our household to have more money because pride."

That's ignoring evolutionary aspects that contribute to our psychology. We're animals at our base and in our type of animal group, the Male provides and protects. It's still instinct in humans. Understanding that helps you understand why a man would have a problem with a spouse that makes more since that's societies current way of providing. Good for you if it doesn't affect you, but you're not the majority of men and just because you can think that way doesn't mean most can. In regards to Taylor's comment addressing the young mans reference to puberty blocking medications being developed for "cis" people: I think he as reffering to the fact that puberty blockers were originally used for a condition that affects some pre pubescent children to go through early puberty. So yes, as far as I know, Lupron has been used for chemical castration in prisons, but it also has been used in treating early puberty conditions. As always, thank you for a great show.

I gained 35 pounds over Covid and I am uncomfortable as hell about it. I don’t feel comfortable in my skin anymore and it’s not fat phobic to want to lose some weight. I literally feel bloated and uncomfortable and I’m going to try to do the best I can to get back to the weight I was before Covid. And I wasn’t even very skinny before Covid. I know a Trans person who says that they knew as early as 5-7 that they were “different,” and as early as 10 that they were not a girl. They spent the rest of puberty confirming this (their parents did not cave and provide puberty blockers etc)…but they never stopped being convinced that they were the other gender. I know them very well, and I don’t think they are lying when they say they believe they are not a woman. What *CAUSES* that phenomena is up for debate…

To be honest, in terms of fatphobic I believe in theory that the general population of, and or once was overweight individuals would feel compassion for people who suffer from either this psychologically or physically taxing burden. I wouldn't look at someone with the intent to judge them unless they do something that would warrant a second thought. However remembering something that was so traumatic that it took a decisive decision to completely transform ones lifestyle; I honestly believe would warrant compassion as someone who has been down that road over and over. You make a good point and I'm proud that you keep making these videos despite the backlash that comes with your career, you do a wonderful job with being straightforward and diligent. Thank you for standing in front of the world and sharing your words.
