Pre-Canadian Scottish, Irish and British history is so fascinating but we're never taught it. We have to learn about Germany and the jews, and not about the Game Of Thrones shit that was happening in the 600 years or so before the Irish and British came to Canada.

It's been eroding steadily over the decades. Here in Alberta, we have a governing party that puts so little value on public education that they prefer to fund the faith-based schools and home schools and charters - none of which have to teach the same curriculum as public schools. The Minister of Education we had from 2019-2023 decided to throw out YEARS' worth of work on a new curriculum and put in her own weird mess. Parts of it were literally plagiarized from Wikipedia, from American curricula. So apparently Canadian kids need to know the KKK slogan. One sample question I will never forget from the social studies portion of that abominable mess is this: Find a map of Alberta. Locate Regina and Duck Lake on it and calculate the distance between them. Our MoE never noticed that this is an assignment that is impossible to do. (Regina and Duck Lake are in Saskatchewan, so you won't find them on a map of Alberta)

I knew Newfoundland was the last province to become part of Canada, because I'm from there. An interesting thing I found out is that if you're from Newfoundland, and you have a parent or grandparent who was born there before 1949 (when it was still part of the UK), you're eligible for UK citizenship. I have one parent and all four grandparents who were born there before 1949, so I'm eligible for a UK citizenship.

No real independence. 1982 was a seditious and treasonous French Roman Catholic who was a war criminal as per the July 1st 1867 British North America treaty and John A. There is no such thing as Canadian Independence. This is the American experience, not the Canadian experience. The Dominion of Canada was created 1 July 1867, when three British North American (BNA) colonies (Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia) joined together under the BNA Act passed by the British parliament. Manitoba, and Rupert's Land joined in 1870, BC in 1871, PEI in 1873 and Newfoundland in 1949. Quebec and Ontario were created out of the province of Canada in 1867. Parts of Rupert's Land (renamed the Northwest Territories) were used to create the Yukon Territory in 1898, Alberta and Saskatchewan in 1905, and other parts were given to Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba in 1912. Finally, Nunavut was carved out of it in 1999. Labrador was confirmed as being part of Newfoundland by a ruling of the British Privy Council in 1927; i.e. before Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949. The province officially changed its name to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001.

And while the BNA Act has now been renamed the Constitution Act 1867, it wasn't called that at the time, whereas the Constitution Act 1982 was always called the Constitution Act. Therefore asking when the Constitution Act was enacted is a misleading question. The real answer to that is 1982. I would also note that Canada didn't assume control over its own foreign policy until the Statute of Westminster 1931, which in my book means that is the point that we were truly independent of Great Britain. So the answer to that part of the question is 1931.

I grew up in a remote northern town along the CN line. Late 70s, a train museum display came through called the Discovery Train. It was supposed to teach us some Canadian history. So the pupils from our small school were ushered through the cars. We thought it quite dull. But this rolling museum, I think, is itself a bit of Canadian history.

In the 1970's when I was in high school under the English school system in the province of Quebec, I did three years of history (Ancient, Renaissance (1400-1800), and Canadian (1500-)). This is probably 1 or 2 years of history more than students do today. However, I believe that all students in Canada do one year of 'Canadian' history. It should be noted that how Canadian history is taught depends on the province as their is not one view towards Canadian history. Thus, students in Nova Scotia will learn more about the history of Nova Scotia; and the same is true in Quebec, Newfoundland, etc.

Question 2: Ontariod, Quebec (one was called upper canada and the other lower canada), new brunswick and nova scotia. Question 3: New Foundland.... though I think labrador was already part of canada and got added on to NL... newest terrritory is Nunavut, split off from Northwest Territories. Question 4: Sir John A McDonald. His son built a house that is a museum in Winnipeg now, called Dalnavert after the area in Scotland that their family came from. Question 5: Longest serving PM? @@rssphllps so still not much about Canada as a whole, I'm good with the indigenous people, they are in fact the true Canadian. We are the immigrants. Most people can't name all the provinces. I know I couldn't name all the prime ministers.

@@user-yk1ts6bv1e I do agree that we don't cover our history as much as we should. I'm sure that has a lot to do with the negative connotations of colonialism. I'm sure the pendulum will swing back a little eventually.

Too bad that most Canadians think that our history isn't worth considering. Also, there were no questions that weren't white-anglo- centric.

@@TheDopekittyI grew up mainly in Ontario, went from grade 1-10, then finished off grades 11 & 12 in New Brunswick, certainly didn't find the education system any more challenging than Ontario, matter of fact, I found the people slightly backwards & less educated ✌️

@@RBB52 I think the younger generation for the most part has less and less knowledge of history, thats not mainly an Ontario thing, I have family still in NB and yes I still notice a difference in mentality, education aside, it's just behind the times and not at all friendly as they claim to be in the maritimes, it's quite gossipy and backstabby, I couldn't wait to leave, love my life in Ontario where people mind thier own business and don't claim to be good people while they gossip about thier neighbors
