You don’t understand what you’re looking at. This is not a spectacle produced for your enjoyment. It is a work of art. It has a historical context that you apparently are not aware of. You are not looking at fires burning in the windows of some anonymous building. You are watching the severed head of Queen Marie Antoinette singing in multiple windows of the prison building where she was held before her beheading during the French revolution. This piece is about France’s gift to the world - the French revolution. At a time when western nations are in danger of losing that gift, the message of this art is of supreme importance. This segment is called Liberté because that’s what it’s about. It’s about the way that liberty is claimed through the destruction of the old norms and oppression by the ruling classes. This is not about what’s remarkable about this segment is not the juxtaposition of show tunes and heavy metal. What’s remarkable about it is the message which you have totally missed.

That being said, metal is perfect to accompany the chaos and violent whirlwinds of this era, where freedom had to be taken, then valiantly defended, by force in the face of absolutist royalties. Gojira is one of the best exports by a French band, all genres combined.🙂

Same thing for Aya's part. She was always critized for her French use and conservatives like the French Academy (the counsil regarding everything related with the French Language) hate her for her involvment in the evolution of French. In her amaizing performance she literally is in front of the French Academy and the band with her is the Republican Guard, they're basically the military band, so the symbol of her entire performance is well rooted too, just like this one! Really loved it personally!

@@maitenabriand6705 Aucun rapport selon moi la prestation d'Aya etait horrible, un playback qui plus es raté. Tu vois même sur la tête des gardes qu'ils auraient preferés être ailleur.... La prestation de Gojira est selon moi la meilleure representation de la France, des JO de FRANCE et non pas que de paris.

The band is Gojira indeed. The aria sung by the soprano on the boat comes from “Carmen”, an opera composed by 19th century french opera composer Georges Bizet. The piece starts with beheaded Queen Marie-Antoinette singing a revolutionary song known to all French “Ca ira” (which is about hanging aristocrats). They performed at “La Concergerie”, a former prison where Marie-Antoinette was held prisoner before being publicly executed in 1793.

The host country spends all the money on the opening ceremonies, in this case it was the French government that paid it all. In 4 years in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the same thing will happen, all expenses paid by the city and the State of California. Great video
