GREETINGS EARTH WOMAN: I listened to Neil Diamond in the summer before I reported to active duty during Viet Nam. I have always loved his album Beautiful Noise and the song by the same name from it. It resonates with my temperament being an enthusiast. He has produced an enormous number of songs and is someways kind of a backdrop to many of the things that happened in the 60s and 70s.

This song has always resonated with me. I quit school at 16 back in 1980. By the time I joined the army in 1983 I had moved 11 times and that's counting my summer traveling with a carnival as only one move. To say I was lost and lonely is an understatement. Great reaction as always young lady. God bless.

My parents were so stifling and strict to the point we couldn't have friends or after school activities. We couldnt even spend time alone in our rooms. When I heard this song it resonated with me so much. I had simply left home and hitched across the country staying in communes along the way. I had to get away. I would scream the verse. But I knew why I felt lost.

In the early 80s I lived in Phoenix. I heard on the radio that Neil Diamond was having a concert at ASU. When I got to work, I asked a young lady if she would like to go hear Neil Diamond. Of course, she said yes, I figured it must have been my charm that convinced her and maybe Neil Diamond had something to do with her saying yes! From the time I heard about the concert was probably 1 1/2 hours. Not only had he sold out the first concert they added another concert it had sold out and they added another concert and it had sold out too! Never did take the young lady out. Guess I lost my charm!

You found a nice way into that song, and a nice re-expression of it... another heavy song from Neil is "Love On The Rocks".

Thanks for that thoughtful review. You got it all right about Neil Diamond. He's a terrific songwriter, one of the most successful ever, and I always say that if you want to get to know him, just listen to his songs. One of his best is the autobiographical Brooklyn Roads. You'd think it's an old wise man who wrote that song, but he was in his 20s. An old soul in a young body. Make sure you choose the studio version to review. But he has a huge catalogue to choose from, from Solitary Man and Stones, over Beautiful Noise and America, to terrific later work as Hell Yeah, Pretty Amazing Grace and Nothing But a Heartache.

My wife and I were lucky enough to see him in concert twice before he had to stop touring. If you choose to do live performances, my recommendation is to use them from "Hot August Nights" 1972 version. For his earlier stuff, I don't think there is a better live source

One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. "I Am, I Said" is one of my favorites. It is almost an autobiography of his life & fame. He had tons of hit songs. "Cherry, Cherry", "Kentucky Woman", "Red Red Wine", "Solitary Man", "Sweet Caroline", "Holly Holy", "Cracklin' Rosie", "Song Sung Blue", "Longfellow Serenade", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" etc. He wrote the song "I'm A Believer" which became a big hit for the Monkees in 1966. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable.

I always loved this song but when I had to move halfway across the country for my senior year of high school (my dad was in the Air Force) it took on a new meaning. I knew that even when I managed to get back to Virginia it would never be the same. I did go back for college and stayed for sixteen years afterward but rarely saw any of my former friends. It’s like high school ended a year early for me but I had to go through the motions of being in a strange school seeing other kids living out their school’s senior traditions, which meant nothing to me, while I was thinking about the ones I was missing. Emotionally I felt like I had walked off a cliff and had nothing solid beneath me. I listened to this song a lot. I enjoyed your reaction. I think you’re the first reactor I’ve seen who really explored the part about the frog who dreamed of being a king. I think it’s a great line but I imagine there was a part of him that said people would think it was stupid and he should come up with something better. I’m glad he kept it.

Mr. Diamond is a national treasure. Such an iconic figure through the 60s on through the turn of the century. Sadly, he was sticken with Parkinson's Disease a few years ago. So tragic for someone that had done so much good for so many people.

the 'frog' story as about a frog who was kissed by a princess and then became a prince. The princes broke the spell. Neil just references the story at a surface level and your interpretation of his surface level adaptation, was very good.
