This is "Defying Gravity" from the musical broadway show Wicked....it was Scott's favorite and Mitch sang this as a birthday gift to Scott. Remember they are choir nerds so musicals are a thing for them. Wicked is the back story of Elphaba the Wicked witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz.

@@Hey_Jamie Well, I never heard Shoshana sing it on Broadway, but when she sang "Pop Goes Broadway" with SuperFruit and put the riff from the end of Defying Gravity at the end of their little medley, it was the (slightly) lower, standard one she used - which is why everybody recognized it immediately. Recommend that video ("Pop Goes Broadway", if you haven't seen it. Mitch uses the optional higher version riff here, with a full octave jump, presumably because he only had to sing it once for a camera. No shade to any of the real Elphabas for not wanting to go for that high one 8 times a week; a sure recipe for destroying your voice.

This is from the musical called Wicked! Mitch is Elphaba, the wicked witch, and Scott is Glinda, the good witch. I clicked on this one so fast! These two goofballs are just amazing to me! They just get each other and seem to love each other. It's so amazing when others can see that in two people. Scott has the wig working against him but he sounded beautiful in his higher register while this song/skit was made for Mitch. I love catching little glimpses of Scott truly enjoying Mitch's voice. There are so many videos that you can catch it if you are looking for it! It is amazing what Mitch can do! Thank you for this one!

This is the big song from the Broadway musical Wicked. You should check that musical out, it's incredible. It's a prequel to the Wizard of Oz that details the friendship between Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba who eventually becomes the wicked witch of the west. In this song, the two are going their separate ways. Elphaba is defying the Wizard and becoming the wicked witch of the west.

SalvoG, have you never seen The Wizzard of Oz? That was an epic film with Judy Garland, made when she was young. Originally the studio executives wanted Shirley Temple to be the star of the movie, but she was tied up with another movie, so Judy Garland was chosen. There were two sister "witches" - one became a good witch and was beautiful, the other turned wicked and became ugly and green. If you have never seen this film, consider yourself cinematically deprived.

I’d suggest going back and listening to it again now that you know more about it (from other commenters. I didn’t want to repeat the information they’ve given you.). A bit of trivia: the part of Elphaba was originally played by Idina Menzel. It was her name that Jon Travolta completely demolished at the Tonys. (Please correct me if it wasn’t John Travolta.)

It makes me sad how many reactors have no idea what this is...I can understand not being familiar with Wicked, but there are a ton of context clues to connect this to The Wizard of Oz...the green face, the line "and nobody, in all of Oz, no wizard that there is or was", etc. so blank looks tell me the reactor has never seen/heard of The Wizard of Oz either and that makes me sad. I feel like so many of the childhood classics are disappearing and someday no one will have heard of these amazing stories. I think someone needs to do to The Wizard of Oz what they did to Annie and refresh it and bring it to a new generation.

Hello 🙋🏻‍♀️, I know you regularly comment to PTX as I recognize your nickname. I'm from Germany and have to admit the Wizard of Oz is almost unknown here, and even more Wicked. When I watched this I really had no idea what it was / is about and still do not. As I'm academic I consider myself not as totally poor educated, but unfortunately these musicals aren't known here. So my question, as you talked about childhood memories, is: Can you recommend me a good version of the Wizard of Oz? Eventually I can find / buy this movie here in Germany somewhere or in the internet. English synchonization is fine. Thank you ❣️

@@violetf.2025 I was thinking U.S. based people when I wrote that, I wouldn't expect people from other countries to inherently know U.S. movies, esp old ones lol...there are 2 main versions...the original with Judy Garland in like the 40s (I think) (which they show in the background during the Wizard of Ahhhhhs) and they had 1 remake in like the 80s or 90s called The Wiz. I honestly never saw it so can't comment on it. It was polarizing...people either loved it or hated it. The original is amazing IF you enjoy old movies because they have a different feel to them than modern movies do and not everyone enjoys them (which is why I think they need to do a 2020s version). Hope that helps 😊

@@missylks1239 If you can believe the Sing-Off judges who launched PTX's career, Mitch is the yin to Scott's yang, (and in 2011, those judges were closer than they realized). Actually, I sort of agree with you that Scott's falsetto is so forced in this (he has a huge range; he often covers the bass line in PTX - but this is actually a bit beyond, IMO) - that they can't achieve their usual accurate blend , complete with matching vibrato; they've been singing together since they were 10. They're about 21 here, on their own mostly-comedy channel. and Scott's just providing the frame for Mitch to sing in the original key, and prove he can hit the optional high note at the end. (Idina tweeted him "Teach me Mitch" when she saw it 2013; Shoshana actually collaborated with them on a cute cover of some pop songs a couple of years later). Anyway, if you're at all interested in how they actually harmonize as a duo in their adult professional lives, go watch PTX's cover of "The Prayer", especially the first three minutes, and get back to me.
