This is "Defying Gravity" from the musical broadway show Wicked....it was Scott's favorite and Mitch sang this as a birthday gift to Scott. @@Hey_Jamie Well, I never heard Shoshana sing it on Broadway, but when she sang "Pop Goes Broadway" with SuperFruit and put the riff from the end of Defying Gravity at the end of their little medley, it was the (slightly) lower, standard one she used - which is why everybody recognized it immediately. Recommend that video ("Pop Goes Broadway", if you haven't seen it. Mitch uses the optional higher version riff here, with a full octave jump, presumably because he only had to sing it once for a camera. No shade to any of the real Elphabas for not wanting to go for that high one 8 times a week; a sure recipe for destroying your voice.

Originally the studio executives wanted Shirley Temple to be the star of the movie, but she was tied up with another movie, so Judy Garland was chosen. There were two sister "witches" - one became a good witch and was beautiful, the other turned wicked and became ugly and green. If you have never seen this film, consider yourself cinematically deprived.

It makes me sad how many reactors have no idea what this is...I can understand not being familiar with Wicked, but there are a ton of context clues to connect this to The Wizard of Oz...the green face, the line "and nobody, in all of Oz, no wizard that there is or was", etc. so blank looks tell me the reactor has never seen/heard of The Wizard of Oz either and that makes me sad. I feel like so many of the childhood classics are disappearing and someday no one will have heard of these amazing stories. I think someone needs to do to The Wizard of Oz what they did to Annie and refresh it and bring it to a new generation.

@@violetf.2025 I was thinking U.S. based people when I wrote that, I wouldn't expect people from other countries to inherently know U.S. movies, esp old ones lol...there are 2 main versions...the original with Judy Garland in like the 40s (I think) (which they show in the background during the Wizard of Ahhhhhs) and they had 1 remake in like the 80s or 90s called The Wiz. I honestly never saw it so can't comment on it. It was polarizing...people either loved it or hated it. The original is amazing IF you enjoy old movies because they have a different feel to them than modern movies do and not everyone enjoys them (which is why I think they need to do a 2020s version). @@missylks1239 If you can believe the Sing-Off judges who launched PTX's career, Mitch is the yin to Scott's yang, (and in 2011, those judges were closer than they realized). Actually, I sort of agree with you that Scott's falsetto is so forced in this (he has a huge range; he often covers the bass line in PTX - but this is actually a bit beyond, IMO) - that they can't achieve their usual accurate blend , complete with matching vibrato; they've been singing together since they were 10. They're about 21 here, on their own mostly-comedy channel. and Scott's just providing the frame for Mitch to sing in the original key, and prove he can hit the optional high note at the end. (Idina tweeted him "Teach me Mitch" when she saw it 2013; Shoshana actually collaborated with them on a cute cover of some pop songs a couple of years later). Anyway, if you're at all interested in how they actually harmonize as a duo in their adult professional lives, go watch PTX's cover of "The Prayer", especially the first three minutes, and get back to me.
