One of the most surprising, most underrated moments in season 3 and the show. Mai & Ty Lee finally break from Azula’s abusive “friendship.”
@epbrown013 ай бұрын
I don’t think it’s underrated - it’s one of the most famous scenes in the show. The shock when Ty Lee takes her down to save Mei - that feeling is what M. Night Shyamalan is trying to accomplish with his endless “twists.” ;-)

One of my favorite lines, and one of the COLDEST lines, Mai's "I love Zuko more than I fear YOU." always frickin GETS ME MAN!!!

Easily one of my favorite moments of the show, as this is where Azula’s mental insecurities begin. Her fear that everyone will abandon her.

To me, this is the moment where Azula lost. The whole entire show, we see Azula as this incredibly calculating, manipulating force. Always one step ahead of the heroes, utilizing her innate skill, and understanding of fear to gain the upper hand. And yet, this betrayal, a betrayal by the only people Azula really considered friends, is the first moment where we see that flawless standard slip. Not only did Mai stand against her, but Ty Lee as well. For a master tactician, such as herself, it's an absolute blunder; like Mai said, a complete miscalculation. Because Mai and Ty Lee chose love, in spite of the consequences. To Azula, someone who used fear and control as an absolute, it is a complete paradox. An act of defiance; a rebuttal without counter; A blow to the entire locus of where Azula derived her stellar power from. In one fell swoop, it knocked Azula's entire logical understanding of people off-kilter and isolated her from the only healthy support systems she still had. From then on, it was only a matter of time before it all fell apart.

That's twice Azula miscalculated: Ty Lee loved Mai more than she feared her.

One thing the best battle tacticians are capable of doing is removing their own emotion from the equation and focusing purely on what likely moves their opponents will make. This is the moment where Azula starts to let her own emotions cloud her judgment, which of course turns into her banishing everyone when she gets named Fire Lord. I always loved this scene though, because it shows Azula's weakness is that she thinks so highly of herself that the idea of Mai or Ty Lee betraying her hasn't even crossed her mind as a possibility. Even though everyone knows why Mai did what she did (probably even Ty Lee), Azula actually has no clue because she's never even considered it.

The brilliance of this show! Ty Lee reluctantly joined azula because she was manipulated into it, Mai joined because she was bored as usual. At some point Ty Lee had to break free. Once Mai fell in love that’s what matters to her no longer following Azula as she knows she was manipulative. Azula knew her mother fear her and loved Zuko that’s why she was so emotional about it.

The only word that can hurt Azula. "Miscalculated"

Mai’s “I guess you just don’t know people as well as you think you do. You miscalculated. I love Zuko more than I fear you” would always get me. In two lines, she broke down Azula’s calmness that she’s always held the entire series up to that point. Let’s break down what made those lines the catalyst of her breakdown. “I guess you just don’t know people as well as you think you do”: Earlier in the episode, Azula pointed out that the guard Chit-sang framed wasn’t the mastermind without even interrogating him, then claims that she’s a “people person” (not in the likeable sense, but probably sarcastically saying she’s someone who can read people well). Azula has always been self-assured and knows who she is, so having someone point out that she’s wrong about herself probably bothered her. “You miscalculated”: Again, Azula has always been confident about her idea of herself and has a history of her plans working out. “I’ve plotted every move of this day,” she once puts it. To say that she miscalculated is again, being told that she’s wrong about herself, further bothering her. “I love Zuko (more)” - We know why this would send her over the edge. In her eyes, Ursa loved Zuko way more than her. Her friends were the only ones she relatively trusted and them betraying her was never part of her calculations. For her to be wrong about that, and worse, for Zuko’s sake, and for it to be pointed out by Mai to her face, was a huge land to her ego. “More than I fear you”: Mai and Ty-lee’s betrayal was never part of the equation because she figured they feared her too much to do it. She’s the princess with the divine right to rule, and even Mai’s attachment to Zuko wasn’t supposed to be a factor, right? She would still be her underling, right? Mai would be too fearful and value her own life than betray Azula, right? No. She doesn’t know people as well as she thinks she does. She miscalculated. Mai loves Zuko more than she fears her. And Ty-lee loves Mai more than she fears her.

One of the many reasons why I love the show is the lessons the show teaches you the lesson here is what happens to Azula is exactly what happens when you try to rule with fear and only fear eventually your own people will turn on you to save themselves and one another

Agreed. There are a few times in the show where Sokka tricks Fire Nation soldiers to do something really stupid. But, they do it because he makes it seem like their superiors ordered it. And, they never refuse an order. Fear only goes so far.
